Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Baiting the Hook

After pondering all afternoon, Wan Chu’er decided to handle Zhuo Yao according to Bai Zhixi’s suggestion.

Her time was precious, and she had a ton of things to do; there was no spare time to waste on Zhuo Yao.

To her enemies, living better and achieving more than them was the ultimate blow.

Of course, should Zhuo Yao not fear losing face or getting beaten again and approaches her, Wan Chu’er wouldn’t hesitate to slap her back, and she also wouldn’t mind taking the chance to undermine Zhuo Yao.

Having figured out what to do about Zhuo Yao, Wan Chu’er decided to quickly deal with Liu Li as well. She too lacked the energy to waste on Liu Li.

That afternoon at school, Wan Chu’er found an opportunity, wrote a note, and while no one was looking, tossed it onto Liu Li’s desk. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

Liu Li, who had just entered the classroom, saw a folded note on her desk as she sat down. She looked around in confusion and asked her deskmate,

"Who left this note on my desk?"

Her deskmate shrugged: "I don’t know."

Liu Li looked up at Wan Chu’er in front of her.

Wan Chu’er was bowing her head, furiously writing her assignment. Faking attentiveness, Liu Li curled her lip.

She slowly unfolded the note, which read:

"Heavenly World is hiring cleaners, 7 PM to 11 PM, ten dollars every night, salary paid daily.

Who is this?!

Liu Li was shocked as she lifted her head, looking around again, trying to find out who put the note on her desk. Unfortunately, after looking around, she met several people’s gazes, all ambiguous, leaving her puzzled.

Her thoughts returned to the note’s content. She knew of Heavenly World, Wutong County’s number one nightclub, resplendent and grand, which to her and her peers was like a beautiful poppy flower, attracting their curious hearts, yet they all knew it wasn’t a good place, not somewhere they should go.

Yet working there for one night paid ten yuan, and she needed ten dollars every day, which, along with her five yuan, would cover the fifteen-dollar deficit. Moreover, the job was cleaning, not anything else.

PM to 11 PM clashed with their evening study time, and ending at 11 PM was quite late, so how could she explain that to her family?

Liu Li clutched the note tightly, her thoughts a jumbled mess. She wanted to go, yet instinctively resisted the idea of going there.

The note, crumpled into a ball, seemed like a burning fireball in Liu Li’s palm, overwhelming her with irritation and indecision.

As for Liu Li’s restless state of mind, Wan Chu’er was unaware. She only knew that Liu Li would most likely go to Heavenly World, and she herself would need to swing by after her evening study and find Manager Bai.

After the evening study, Wan Chu’er hurried to Heavenly World only to find that the trip was in vain; Manager Bai wasn’t there.

Isn’t he a manager? Not sticking to his post, what the hell is he up to?!

Wan Chu’er mentally scoffed at the unreliable Manager Bai, left a message with the same sister who had greeted her last time, saying she would come back the following afternoon, then left.

Worried that Liu Li might seek out Heavenly World tomorrow, Wan Chu’er decided to head over to Jinghua Hotel.

Jinghua Hotel was still brightly lit, with people inside eating and drinking.

Wan Chu’er inquired at the hotel reception with politeness yet detachment: "Excuse me, is Manager Bai here?"

Sitting in a corner of the reception was a young man in his late twenties, idly playing with a lighter. Hearing Wan Chu’er, he looked up, saw a girl in a school uniform, and was somewhat perplexed. He didn’t recognize her.

He spoke up: "I am Manager Bai. Are you looking for me?"

Wan Chu’er followed the voice, and seeing a man who looked very similar to Xiao Bai, guessed that the two must be brothers.

She said, "I’m looking for Manager Bai from Heavenly World, around twenty-five or twenty-six years old. He should be your younger brother, right?"

The man couldn’t help but laugh, saying, "The one from Heavenly World is indeed my brother. Little girl, what do you want with my brother? If he’s done something wrong, I can help you settle the score."

What is this all about? Wan Chu’er’s face darkened. This brother, assuming without inquiry that his sibling did wrong, was all set to take her side.

Are they close or what?

Both brothers were unreliable, Wan Chu’er concluded, inwardly.

Seeing Wan Chu’er’s disgusted expression, the man only laughed louder. Staying at the hotel all evening was terribly boring, but the arrival of an interesting girl made it less so.

"Don’t worry, even if it’s my brother, I’ll handle it fairly. Just tell me what he did to you," he coaxed, adding to Wan Chu’er’s internal tirade.

With a wooden expression, she said, "Hello, actually, I needed to ask your brother for a favor. Is he here?"

"He’s not here." Xiao Bai’s brother warmed up to Wan Chu’er for her honesty – she hadn’t climbed up on his lead, but he was curious about her request to his brother: "What’s the matter? Tell me."

Wan Chu’er gave a dry laugh, saying, "Sorry to disturb you." Then she turned to leave.

"Hey—", Xiao Bai’s brother quickly called out to her, "Why are you leaving? You haven’t said what it’s about."

On hearing his voice, Wan Chu’er stopped, turned, and said, "Would you mind passing on a message to your brother that I’ll be looking for him at Heavenly World tomorrow noon?"

Given Xiao Bai’s elusive ways, perhaps even that female worker at Heavenly World might not be able to find him, but his brother certainly could contact him.

"First tell me what it is."

Wan Chu’er blinked, pondered, and decided it wasn’t anything secretive, so she said, "It’s about a job; a classmate of mine is looking for work at Heavenly World."

Xiao Bai’s brother snorted kindly, "Heavenly World doesn’t hire students."

Wan Chu’er uttered an "Oh" and turned to leave again.

She thought Xiao Bai’s brother was just like Xiao Bai – bothersome.

Ever heard of curiosity killed the cat?!

Behind her, Xiao Bai’s brother mumbled to himself, "This girl is something else. Are high school students these days really so bold?"
