Rebirth: A Second chance at life-Chapter 59: Unexpected twist?
Chapter 59: Unexpected twist?
Alexander’s head snapped toward her the moment she collapsed. His brows furrowed, and he quickly closed the distance between them.
"Veronica!" His deep voice carried an edge of urgency, and without hesitation, he bent down, scooping her up in his arms.
"Call the doctor!" he barked at Derek as he carried her out of his office. His strong arms held her firmly, his steps quick yet controlled as he laid her down on the plush bed in the separate lounge area within his office.
Veronica, even in her act, could feel the warmth of his arms around her, and inwardly, she smirked. Everything was going just as planned.
After laying Veronica down on the bed in the adjacent room of his office, Alexander turned away without a second glance.
His jaw tightened as he pulled out his phone and dialed Oliver’s number. The call connected instantly.
"Get the team ready," Alexander ordered, his voice cold and authoritative. "Find Lily. I want her location within the hour."
"Understood, Mr. Brown," Oliver replied without hesitation. "I’ll mobilize our best men immediately."
Alexander ended the call and let out a slow exhale. His fingers clenched into fists. Whoever dared to cross him—whoever thought they could kidnap someone under his watch—would soon learn the consequences of provoking him.
He turned his gaze back to Veronica. She lay on the bed, her eyes fluttering slightly, as though struggling in a nightmare.
Her pale face and tear-streaked cheeks painted the perfect picture of a helpless daughter desperate to save her mother.
Alexander’s expression remained impassive. He didn’t trust emotions. He didn’t trust weakness. But he had promised her that nothing would happen to Lily—and he would keep his word.
Just then, Derek knocked on the door and stepped in. "Sir, Oliver has already dispatched the team. They’re tracking the last known movements of Lily Smith."
Alexander gave a curt nod. "Tell them to report back the moment they find something. No mistakes."
Derek acknowledged the order and left.
Moments later, the doctor arrived in a hurry, his forehead beading with sweat. He gulped nervously, knowing full well that Alexander Brown was not someone who tolerated incompetence.
Alexander stood by the bed, his arms crossed, his expression cold as he watched the doctor work. "What happened to her?"
The doctor meticulously checked Veronica’s vitals, placing a stethoscope to her chest, checking her pulse, and flashing a small light into her eyes.
The silence in the room was suffocating under Alexander’s sharp gaze. After a moment, the doctor finally spoke, his voice careful.
"Mr. Brown, there’s nothing physically wrong with her. She seems to have fainted due to extreme emotional distress. It’s likely a result of shock."
A single drop of cold sweat trickled down the doctor’s back as he waited for Alexander’s reaction.
Alexander’s gaze darkened slightly. "Give her whatever she needs to recover."
The doctor nodded hurriedly, prescribing mild sedatives and vitamins, though he knew very well that there was nothing medically wrong with her.
Once he finished, he quickly excused himself, not wanting to linger under Alexander’s intense scrutiny any longer than necessary.
A few minutes later, Veronica stirred. Slowly, she fluttered her eyes open, blinking hazily as if waking from a nightmare.
"Mom..." she whimpered softly, her voice weak and pitiful. A single tear slid down her cheek, adding to her perfectly crafted image of a heartbroken daughter.
Alexander, who had been silently observing her, saw her attempt to sit up. Before she could get far, he gently pressed a firm hand on her shoulder, stopping her from moving too much.
"Take it easy. You just fainted," he said, his voice surprisingly softer than before.
Veronica sniffled, casting her teary gaze downward as if ashamed. Slowly, she moved, bowing slightly in a respectful posture.
"Mr. Brown... thank you for taking care of me. I won’t trouble you any longer," she whispered, her voice filled with sadness. "This is my family’s matter... I should handle it myself."
Her body trembled as if she were gathering all her strength just to stand, her fragile figure radiating helplessness.
Alexander stared at her for a moment, something twisting in his chest. He reached out and caught her wrist, stopping her from leaving.
"Veronica," he said, his tone unusually gentle. "I know about your mother. Don’t worry—I won’t let anything happen to her."
His words, strong and unwavering, made Veronica lower her lashes to hide the satisfaction in her eyes. Everything was going perfectly.
Unbeknownst to Alexander, a faint smirk curled at the corner of her lips for just a fleeting second before she let out another small, pitiful sob.
A few moments later, Alexander’s phone buzzed on the table, its vibration breaking the tense silence in the room. He picked it up, his sharp gaze flickering toward the screen before answering.
"Speak." His voice was cold and commanding.
Alexander’s grip on his phone tightened as he processed the information. His expression darkened, and a dangerous glint flashed through his eyes.
The moment he placed the phone down, he turned to Veronica, who was still lying on the bed, her breathing slow and uneven.
Sighing, he spoke, his voice heavy. "There was a bounty of fifty million on your mother, posted on the dark web yesterday."
Veronica’s body stiffened. Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out.
"She was kidnapped by the Sharks, a local but powerful gang in Estria." Alexander’s eyes bore into her, scrutinizing every reaction. "And she was delivered to Calvert Harrison."
The color drained from Veronica’s face instantly. "Calvert Harrison?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alexander leaned back, crossing his arms as he watched her closely. "The bounty was put up by an anonymous person."
Veronica swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she clutched the blanket beneath her. She was prepared for sympathy, not interrogation. "I—I don’t know, Mr. Brown... We—we’ve always maintained a low profile in business. My father never made enemies!"
Alexander’s gaze hardened. Although he had a good impression of Veronica, he couldn’t help but look at her skeptically now.
Who had the Smiths offended for someone to take such a drastic action? And why was Lily specifically delivered to Calvert Harrison?
This wasn’t just a simple case of revenge or business rivalry—this was deliberate, calculated.
Alexander leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the armrest. His dark eyes bore into Veronica as she sat there, her face painted with distress. Was this just an unfortunate situation, or was there more to it?
He would get the answers soon enough.
Seeing Alexander’s reaction, Veronica panicked internally. What the hell? How did her mother end up in Calvert Harrison’s hands? He wanted Aurora—so why was Lily the one who got kidnapped? This wasn’t part of the plan.
But then, as the gears in her mind turned, a smirk tugged at her lips. Fine. If it’s Aurora he wants, then Aurora he will get.
This unexpected twist might just work in her favor.
