Chapter 64: Ambush-1

Sniff.

Kevin took a deep breath, gritting his teeth as he dabbed the medicine on his wound.

It stung—but he was used to it.

Earlier, on his way back from the common hall after dinner, a bunch of seniors had cornered him. They threw accusations at him—called him arrogant, disrespectful, full of himself.

For what? Not bowing to them? Was he supposed to go around greeting every senior like some servant?

He already knew what this was really about.

The son of that Count, who had been knocked down during Edric’s birthday party, was just looking for payback.

Kevin had refused to kneel.

A fight broke out.

And in the end, the staff had to come and pull those so-called "leaders" out of their mess.

They might have trained in comfort, inside safe arenas, and under constant supervision.

But Kevin?

Aston had dropped him into the forest and left him there for days, alone. No safety nets, no backup. Just him, the wild, and the silence.

That’s how he learned to survive. To fight. To stand on his own two feet.

And thanks to that, three spoiled nobles weren’t enough to rattle him.

Not anymore.

Haah...

Thankfully, the management here wasn’t biased.

When the authorities arrived, they didn’t scold him or question him unfairly. Instead, they calmly told him to report the incident to a teacher tomorrow and return to his room.

It was a small thing, but to Kevin, it meant a lot.

In this academy, titles didn’t rule. Social standing, noble blood—none of it held weight where it truly mattered.

And that was all he needed to feel at ease.

Those idiots could bark all they wanted—he didn’t need to worry about them anymore.

He let out a long breath and leaned back slightly.

Tomorrow marked the official start of the term. And if there was one thing he refused to do, it was to show up late on his first day.

He stood, rolled his shoulders, and made his way to bed, letting the quiet of the room finally settle around him.

....

Arthur was near the main palace, having snuck out of the inn without letting Timothy notice him.

The poor guy was barely standing on his feet because of the drowsiness, but still showed no sign of leaving.

Well, Arthur would get rid of him tomorrow somehow, since for the whole day, Arthur needs to remain close to the Princess.

"Lily, can you locate the Princess?" Arthur asked, his eyes fixed on the grand palace in the distance. Getting inside without being noticed would be a challenge.

[Yes, host. She is on the east side of the palace, third floor, standing on the balcony.]

Arthur was taken aback by how exact the information was—but it made sense. Lily was an angel who served the same Goddess that had blessed Elowen, after all.

Without wasting time, Arthur moved swiftly through the quiet city. His speed was unnatural—so fast that no passerby could catch even a glimpse of him. With midnight approaching, the streets were mostly empty, making his journey easier.

He noticed a few guards patrolling near the palace, their eyes sharp and alert, scanning for anyone who might be spying.

Arthur could sense them using <Detection>, but he knew they could use it too. That’s why he took the longer path, leaping across rooftops to avoid drawing attention.

He didn’t want anything to delay this mission. He knew exactly when and what was going to happen tonight. If things went wrong, he’d be forced to make another trip to Durnhalm—and that was the last thing he wanted.

Reaching the spot where he could finally see the Princess, Arthur came to a stop.

There she was—standing at the edge of the balcony, the wind playing with her hair, a soft smile on her face as she enjoyed the night breeze.

"The Chosen One, huh?" he thought.

There was nothing outwardly special about her. She looked like any other noble girl. And yet, she carried the blessing of the strongest Goddess. That alone made her important—and tomorrow, it would be his duty to protect her.

"That smile of hers... it won’t last."

The wind howled around him, and just like that, his figure vanished into the night, whistling through the air as he returned to the motel where he was staying.

Elowen seemed to have noticed someone looking at her, but by the time she turned toward the person, he was gone.

’Must be one of my admirers...’ With a smug she walked back in her room and began preparing for the excursion. She must look pretty tomorrow~

The Princess’s outing was meant to be a simple excursion—just a short trip to the forest to hunt a few beasts, improve her aim, and learn some basic survival skills.

The one in charge of her safety was none other than the Commander of the Imperial Order.

Naturally, her father made no compromises when it came to her protection. After all, she was the most important person in the nation after the Emperor himself.

As she stepped toward the carriage, a familiar voice called out behind her.

"Let me help you."

She paused, rolled her eyes, and scoffed. "I don’t need your support." With ease, she climbed into the carriage and shut the door—right in her brother’s face.

Nearby soldiers glanced briefly at the poor prince before returning to their posts without a word.

Commander Bennet, standing close, looked at the prince with a serious frown.

"Your Highness, are you sure you don’t want me to prepare another carriage for you?" he asked.

The prince was known for his weak health. Traveling in the blazing summer heat for long hours could easily wear him down.

But the young man offered a soft smile.

"It’s fine, Sir Bennet. I’ll try not to slow you down."

The older one lowered his eyes and in the end, just nodded, "As you wish."

They all climbed onto their horses and the convoy finally left the palace from the back gate.

What none of them noticed was a pair of eyes watching them from the shadows, a malicious grin on their face.

’Finally, it’s time to devour~’
