Chapter 45: Help

Grace... she was the first person who truly saw Clarsen for who he was.

Not the ruthless beast everyone believed him to be. Not the cold killer who rose through the ranks by leaving trails of bodies behind. No, she reached past all that. She saw the man underneath—the hesitant soul, the one who still flinched at the thought of taking a life, even after becoming a General.

Can you imagine? A man known for slaughtering over three hundred enemies on his own... still feeling guilt. Still pitying the creatures he fought. Only Grace knew that side of him.

She was relentless, brave, and breathtaking in a way that made it impossible for him not to fall. She didn’t stop at his armor—she tore it down, piece by piece, with patience and understanding.

And how did he repay her?

He destroyed her world.

He killed her family. The very people she held dear—gone by his hands. Later, when the truth came out—that Clarsen had been working with the Dark Side—Grace didn’t just lose her loved ones. She lost her name, her dignity, and her peace.

The world turned on her. People spat at her feet, called her a traitor, and claimed she’d always been one of them. That she helped him. Hid him. Loved him.

She had to prove her innocence just to breathe again. To survive.

And through all of that... Eric stood by her. He never wavered, never doubted. When everyone else abandoned her, he was the one who didn’t.

Maybe that’s why...

"Haah~ What am I even thinking?" Arthur muttered, shaking his head as he scooped up the last bite of his lunch.

"Arthur, wanna come to the market?" his brother asked, already up and pacing by the window. His eyes sparkled with excitement, clearly itching to get outside.

Arthur glanced at him. Kevin had finished eating a while ago, but his energy hadn’t dropped a bit. He looked like he was about to burst with enthusiasm.

Arthur didn’t really have anything better to do anyway. Sitting around would only drag his mind back to places he didn’t want to visit again.

"Yeah, let’s go," he said, standing up. He washed his hands, stacked the dishes on the tray, and quietly stepped out to leave them outside their room.

Kevin, meanwhile, had gone to the room next door.

They had been given two rooms—surprisingly generous, considering how full the inn was. Each room could easily fit ten people, and yet here they were, just two of them in one room.

Knock knock.

Kevin tapped on the wooden door, and a few seconds later, their father opened it.

"Dad, Mom said she wanted to go to the market?" Kevin asked, peeking inside. freewebnøvel.com

Their mother was lying on the bed, already asleep.

"She must’ve been exhausted," Aston said softly, glancing at her. "She fell asleep right after eating."

Kevin nodded. "Oh... so you’re not coming either?"

Aston raised a brow. "You two can go and look around. You’re old enough to handle yourselves."

Arthur deadpanned. "Dad, I’m ten. What if I get lost?"

Aston snorted, trying not to laugh. The same ten-year-old who crossed the Great Forest without a scratch is suddenly worried about losing his way in a market?

"I’ll go make a missing person report then," he said, feigning concern.

Arthur sighed. Kevin grinned, already stepping out of the room. He grabbed Arthur’s hand and gave it a light tug.

"Stick close to Big Bro," he said with a wink.

Arthur rolled his eyes, but didn’t say anything. He followed quietly, letting his brother’s excitement pull him along.

....

The duo stepped out of the inn not so long after.

There were still a few royal carriages that could be seen in the market, heading towards the other motels. There were several of them arranged for the foreign guests.

The important ones, naturally, were staying at the palace.

"Where do you want to go?" Arthur asked as he looked around aimlessly. He wasn’t actually very eager to buy anything, but surely he can walk around after eating so much food.

"Let’s go there. I saw a crepe shop there."

"..." Arthur was quite shocked. How much can he eat? And is there anything other than food on his mind?

Regardless, he said nothing and followed him.

The duo walked slowly through the town. There were many people around, but none of them seemed in a rush or pushing people. They calmly walked through different stores, some buying and some just exploring things.

"There is a weapon shop..." Kevin muttered under his breath as his eyes caught a shop on the other side of the street.

It was not like a stall in Westmere but a proper blacksmith’s studio which offered a variety of weapons.

"Wanna go in? We can buy something?" Surely a dagger or knife won’t hurt. He is a warrior with enough anger control not to swing his weapon on the drop of a hat.

However, "I want to buy my first weapon with the money I have earned. So I will refrain."

Arthur hummed, impressed.

Talking about his first weapon...Clarsen actually stole it from his roommate and later he was punished by having his palm slit with the same weapon

So yes, he also has quite an eventful memory related to his first weapon.

They soon reached the crepe shop and Kevin ordered only for himself. Arthur had already had his stomach full.

"You really don’t want one?" While Kevin feasted on his banana dessert, he asked his brother while intentionally enjoying it as if it were his last meal.

Arthur chuckled, "You are childish."

Kevin chuckled and continued to eat in silence, when suddenly, his eyes caught something suspicious.

"Hmm?" He looked at a girl standing on the other side of the street, wearing a fabric around her face and head. Only her brown, pretty eyes were visible.

She was standing before a men’s underwear shop, stepping towards the shop and backing off instantly.

Kevin handed the crepe to his brother, saying, "I will be back."

Arthur also noticed the girl, but he didn’t have the itch to help a random girl, so he just remained standing, and now holding a hot crepe.

He looks like a lost child now.

Weren’t you supposed to take care of me, brother? He inwardly muttered.

Meanwhile, Kevin walked toward the girl and called out, "Hey, are you okay?"

She was startled to be called out but didn’t try to run away, "Uhm...I am a bit troubled here."

"Can I help you?" Kevin offered.

The girl looked hesitant, and surely she should be. He was a complete stranger who came to her out of nowhere.

"Don’t worry, I won’t scam you or anything. Just tell me if you want me to buy something for you." He has discerned that she surely must have to buy men’s underwear, that’s why she has been fidgeting before the store ever since.

And as he thought, "Umm...can you bring three small-sized ones? No color preference." She handed him fifteen bronze coins.

Kevin nodded before he took the money and went inside the store.

The woman peeked inside the shop but instantly stepped away when she saw a few men walking out.

After a few moments, Kevin stepped out while holding a paper bag, "Here is what you wanted."

The girl’s eyes turned crescent as she hugged the paper bag and said, "Many thanks. You saved me."

Kevin has a soft frown on his face as he asks, "Why were you even forced to buy something a man should buy? Younger brother?" Considering the size, he thought.

The girl looked slightly awkward as she said, "Yes...kind of. He doesn’t like to wear expensive materials, so he asked me to buy from a local shop."

Kevin huffed, "He should learn from my younger brother. He can even cook by himself." While raising his hand toward the black haired kid across the street, he boasted.

The girl looked at Arthur, and the latter gave a small salute with two fingers.

"Ah-haha...I will tell him to be more responsible. Thank you again for your help." She gave a soft bow before she turned on her feet and hurried away.

Kevin heaved a sigh as she said with a shake of his head, "A day without helping a maiden is a day wasted."

"Oh, my~I wonder how Mom would react once she finds out that you abandoned me to help a random girl."

Kevin’s face turned pale as Arthur whispered in a dangerous, low whisper after reaching behind his brother.

He turned towards Arthur with a pleading gaze, "Art..."

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Here, finish this and let’s go back."
