Psychic Overlord-Chapter 52: Instructor Selection
Chapter 52: Instructor Selection
Kaizer and Rina glanced at Madam Sylvia, silently, waiting for whatever offer she would make.
"Erhum, first off, I will offer you five things. The first is around-the-clock tutorship that caters to your specific needs at all times. It doesn’t matter whether it is midnight or early morning, if you have any questions, issues, or problems in the growth of your esper ability, I will drop everything to help you."
"The second is special missions. I am also serving as a Deputy Branch Manager for the Esper Commission branch in the academy and can secure the best, safest, and most efficient tasks to take on for your practicals."
"The third thing I can offer is specialized resources not just from the academy, but from the archives of my own esper clan. I hail from the Seltzer Family, an esper lineage that has existed since 1457 and has persisted till now, producing consistent top-quality espers since then. Our library may not reach the esper academy level, but we have things that even the esper academy does not have."
"The fourth is a special subsidy. In order to prevent you from being distracted by the need to acquire funds, I will present you a villa lodging with the best service for your daily comforts, allowing you to focus solely on your practice without having to take on work on the side."
"The fifth thing I can give you are special privileges in all facets of the academy’s operations, given my reputation and standing within the school. Along with that comes the benefit of interacting with my personal community of disciples, most of whom are A-grade espers, with two other S-grade espers under my belt, who would be your fellow apprentices."
Madam Sylvia smiled confidently. "Choosing me is choosing success. I have the knowledge, I have the backing, I have the power, and I have the resources. What more could you want?"
Rina’s eyes lit up, but she still glanced towards Kaizer, who was nonplussed. She understood that it was not time to make a move and simply glanced at the other instructors, who had ugly expressions.
From Madam Sylvia downwards, the instructors also made their offers, which were, in some aspects, better than Madam Sylvia’s, but in others far worse. For example, they offered a lot of money but could not offer the privileges, the backing, and the knowledge that Madam Sylvia did.
Some also offered much more freedom since the duo seemed to want that, given their earlier behaviors, some even stating that they would practically allow them to be out at a moment’s notice and would protect them.
Heck, some even hinted that sexual and romantic favors were not off the table, especially the female instructors towards Kaizer. Male instructors refrained from doing so towards Rina due to the gender dynamic not being the same.
By the time the offers were done, Rina and Kaizer were amazed because they had heard it all. Rina, if she didn’t previously grasp their importance to instructors as S-grade esper students, she now had more than a fair idea of it.
Kaizer pondered, listening to the thoughts of the various instructors and especially the contrast between what they said they were willing to do and what they were actually willing to do.
Ironically, Kaizer found that the promise of sexual favors was the most legitimate offer. Many did not even have the ability to fulfill what they promised or did not confirm that they could, opting to make grand promises now and figuring how to cross that bridge later.
In fact, after careful observation, Madam Sylvia was undoubtedly the best option as she did intend to fulfill all her promises and had the ability, her endless confidence understated by her physical demeanor. Her mind was more active, hurriedly allocating resources from other places to Rina and Kaizer based on who took her.
Kaizer was partially convinced because she was pulling out about 80% of the stops. In fact, she was still willing to negotiate more if the duo were unsatisfied, because she had already tried to lower the price down to the limit of what she felt they would not be insulted by.
Kaizer tapped the table lightly, glancing at Madam Sylvia straightforwardly. "Madam Sylvia, Rina will be willing to go with you if you can ensure three conditions on top of what you offered."
Hearing that the most valuable S+ esper Rina was almost at her gates, Madam Sylvia tensed up. She was like a normal paycheck-to-paycheck living person hearing that they were about to be given a sum of 500 million dollars if they did three things.
At this moment, she would likely agree to things she never would have before.
"Firstly, you will be supportive of her acquiring exeats to go out frequently, as her mother is very clingy and needs to see her daughter often to feel secure."
Madam Sylvia relaxed visibly. "Just this? If you want, I can have her mother hired as advisory staff for non-esper matters, and have her move into Rina’s villa within the academy if necessary."
Kaizer glanced at Rina, who was excited by the idea, then nodded. "Please do. Secondly, I want you to prevent any male student within your community or who has access to Rina from having even the slightest inclination that he can court her. This will warrant a public announcement from you that Rina is off-limits, and to qualify, one would have to match up to the criteria Rina will state to you in private."
Uh...
Madam Sylvia did not expect this and glanced at Rina. She admitted that the young lady was truly fashionable and voluptuous, but there were many beauties in the esper academy to feast one’s eyes on. She herself, Madam Sylvia, ranked as the most beautiful instructor and even the placid young man’s eyes often inadvertently roved her amazing figure.
Anyway, it wasn’t a problem, and she made it clear with an ’ok’ sign.
"Thirdly and finally, you are to keep the specific developments of Rina’s esper ability a secret between you and her. This is the most important requirement." Kaizer concluded, his eyes boring into Madam Sylvia.
Kaizer was not willing to play with this one, because sooner or later, Madam Sylvia would find out about Rina’s resurrection ability. Kaizer did not know if there was a life-element esper ability that could also guarantee the perfect resurrection of a person, but he wasn’t willing to risk it.
He admitted his endless growth potential and telepathic ability were taboos that could cause more hatred than favor if people knew, but it was nothing compared to the ability to bring back the dead without any flaws whatsoever.
How many people a year lost their loved ones to accidents or disease that would do anything to get them back? Hearing that someone actually could bring them back, even if they were poor, what lengths would they go to to make sure Rina does that for them?
Now consider what the rich and powerful would do, especially the powerful espers.
If Madam Sylvia showed the slightest hesitation, everything she promised would be for naught. Kaizer had to be sure that this woman would find out and be able to keep her mouth shut because if not, even if he became strong enough to get revenge on her later, it would not stop the endless troubles the Lunin family would face because of it.
Madam Sylvia blinked. "Privacy? That’s a given. Every instructor is required to maintain the privacy of their students, especially for you special echelon students with unique abilities."
Kaizer did not respond but continued tapping the table lightly while staring Madam Sylvia in the eye. Madam Sylvia realized that this was not what Kaizer wanted to hear even if it was the truth and she understood that Rina’s ability might have some unspeakable aspect of it that could not be shared.
Madam Sylvia’s expression became serious. "The Esper Commission has a special member who can ensure oaths are enforced using his special power. Before signing the agreement with young Rina to be her instructor, I will ensure that this oath is taken!"
Kaizer knew that she was telling the truth and she had classified Rina as her most important student, even more than she did before. As such, he nodded to Madam Sylvia and turned to Rina.
"She’s good. Go with her."
"Okay, but what about you?" Rina acquiesced but inquired curiously.
This was also something the other instructors wanted to know. Even if the most valuable Rina had already been allocated to Madam Sylvia, that was something they expected, even thinking both would be swallowed up by her.
However, since Kaizer made it clear that only his sister would go, it was obvious that he had other plans. In fact, Madam Sylvia was not bothered by this as the way she was going to invest in Rina now could be more focused rather than taking them both on.
Now, she was just curious among the various other instructors as to who could get this S- esper student under their wing.
