727: Caveman

727: Caveman

A sudden, deep shout interrupted my heavenly mound inspection.

It came from Sunscar, but the force with which this individual bellowed easily carried his voice to us.

“DIE, LIONKIN SCUM! freёnovelkiss.com

GRAAAH!!

FOR KARGRIM!”

Even from this distance, the voice rang clear: gravelly, furious, and full of bearkin bloodlust.

The siege had begun, and with it, the rumble of distant battle stirred the air.

I blinked, distracted just for a second, but it was enough for her.

In one fluid motion, Vex slipped from my arms like a slippery fish.

With a soft splash, she dove straight into the bath, submerging herself fully beneath the steaming water.

Only her bright eyes peeking above the surface like some ancient, white-haired swamp creature could be seen.

Our gazes met.

Hers was a mixture of embarrassment and mischievous glee, cheeks puffed just slightly from holding in her breath, trying to hide her grin like a guilty schoolgirl who got away with sneaking the last cookie.

I couldn’t help but laugh, shaking my head as I turned back to the shower.

“Why is this turbo sadistic woman so damned cute…” I muttered under my breath.

For a woman nearing two centuries, she sure had her teenage moments.

Just as I began washing myself, Blossom’s voice chimed in with excitement and pleading.

“Master should wash Ghosty’s body too!

She can’t do it herself…!!”

I looked at her.

Her ears were twitching.

Her tails were wagging so fast they were practically vibrating.

The guilty blush she wore betrayed her little fib.

“I’m not against the proposal one bit, but we both know perfectly well that you can wash yourself.”

She squirmed, eyes darting everywhere but my face.

“Ghosty is too fluffy!

She’ll miss a spot!”

I arched a brow, smirking.

“You really just want me to do it.”

“…Maybe.” She mumbled, bouncing on her toes.

“But Ghosty will be clean if Master washes her!

Super clean!

Cleaner than Kitsara!”

Naturally, I was more than happy to shower my beloved dog girl in my overwhelming affection, so I parted my arms.

“Come, my beloved first.

Let’s wash each other!”

She instantly vanished into thin air and reappeared in a burst of swirling shadows and flickering void, materializing right into my arms.

Her lips attacked my chin with a flurry of smooches, each one messier than the last.

There was no resisting her, not that I ever planned to.

Her infectious joy and affection lit up my heart like a warm fire in winter.

The two of us disappeared into the shower, her humming happily as I reached for the soap, and a few moments later, we emerged together—clean, warm, and still giggling like idiots—as we sank into the bath beside the others.

Only one person remained untouched by water and relaxation.

Raika.

She sat on the ground, cross-legged, arms crossed like a statue of stubbornness and obedience rolled into one.

She had barely moved an inch since Vex had told her to sit.

“Your turn, Raika.”

With a grunt, Raika rose and tossed her black bathing garments to the side with all the care of someone discarding battlefield debris.

She began undressing right then and there, completely unbothered by eyes or etiquette.

Before she could get fully undressed, however, Vex narrowed her eyes.

“Bathing suit on,” she said sharply, snapping her fingers in emphasis.

Raika groaned, halfway through tugging off her top, but complied with exaggerated exasperation.

Meanwhile, I found myself oogling the show.

If she didn’t mind me watching, who was I to turn away?

“Ah-ah-ah~ No peeking!” Vex suddenly chirped, sliding up behind me and covering my eyes with both hands.

Her voice was all sugar and silk, but I wasn’t able to pay full attention to her words because my brain was busy ensuring I would never forget the sensations of her naked breasts mashing against my back.

Indeed, she’d lost her bra during the shower, and since she rushed into the bath to escape my reach, she hadn’t changed into her bathing attire.

“I wasn’t peeking.”

“Mmhm,” she hummed, not believing me for one second.

“I’m a changed man,” I defended with a dramatic sigh, reaching up to rest my hands over hers.

“A gentlemanly knight shouldn’t peek at a defenseless maiden, nor should he lie to his future maiden…” she whispered against my ear, laughing under her breath.

“CHARGE!” Vargis’s thunderous roar rolled through the skies like a divine proclamation, snapping everyone’s attention toward the battlefield below.

At once, we all moved toward the edge of the bath, making the water slosh as we leaned out to peer down the hill at the chaos unfolding around Sunscar.

From our vantage point, the sight was breathtaking.

The bearkin had taken the lead, forming tight, disciplined ranks that surged forward in waves.

These weren’t just charges; they were deliberate, bone-rattling collisions.

Each coordinated wave slammed against the city’s fortified walls, their sheer mass and power making the entire structure quake.

Chunks of stone cracked and tumbled down under the pressure.

The bearkin moved like battering rams made of flesh and fury, their war cries shaking the air itself.

On the other side of the city, the dogkin launched their assault with a completely different energy.

Graceful, agile, and efficient, they didn’t bother with ramming into stone or wearing down defenses through brute force.

No, these soldiers simply leapt—using their immense strength and honed reflexes to vault over the walls as if they were mere decorations.

Some bounced from tree to wall, others boosted each other mid-air.

It was a surreal sight to behold.

“…Why do cities even have walls?” I murmured under my breath, watching another dozen soldiers somersault into the fray like trained acrobats in full armor.

Vex, who decided her best course of action was to climb further up on my back so she could peer over my shoulder, chuckled.

“Walls are mostly for monsters, not high-leveled combatants.

They’re meant to slow them down, keep them from crashing into markets or homes where the weak civilians are vulnerable.”

“I see…” I replied thoughtfully.

It made sense.

Against an army of such a magnitude, these defenses were a mere formality.

A sudden tremble caught my attention.

I turned just enough to see Raika shuddering from head to toe.

Her fists clenched, and her teeth were gritted together in silent frustration.

She was twitching and whimpering, making me think she resembled a coiled spring that was ready to explode.

Every fiber of her being screamed to join the battle.

Vex noticed it, too.

“Oh no…” she muttered under her breath.

“I don’t think she can hold it in much longer,” I said.

“She’s gonna pop.”

Raika let out a long, shaky exhale and muttered, “So unfair… All the killing… All the blood… and I’m forced to sit in a puddle…”

“Raika, your energy reserves are near depleted.

Vex is being considerate when she makes you sit out of this battle,” I said.

“Haaah…” Vex sighed tiredly, shaking her head.

“Making this barbarian see logic is a task most impossible.

I love her dearly, but she’s a rabid beast who must fight, no matter what.

That’s why I have to beat her up from time to time, to let her brain know she is still beneath me.

That’s the only reason she’s obedient toward me while completely ignoring the rest of you guys.”

Raika was one twitch away from vaulting out of the bath when I cleared my throat and turned to her with a very serious face.

“Raika.”

She didn’t even blink, paying me zero attention.

I nodded gravely, then thumped my chest once.

“Me Quinlan.

You Raika.”

The others froze.

Kitsara raised an eyebrow.

Blossom tilted her head.

Vex’s face contorted into something halfway between curiosity and horror.

“What… is he doing?” Vex whispered.

I didn’t let the judgment of my audience stop me.

“Raika want big fight, yes?” I said in a deep, overly primitive voice.

“But Raika no smart.

Raika fight now… get sleepy later.

No biiiig fight later.

Raika sad.”

Raika’s eye twitched.

“…What?”

I pressed on.

“More energy now… MORE BATTLE later.” I spread my arms wide like I was explaining the secrets of the cosmos.

“Sunscar small skirmish.

Many dog.

Many bear.

Few lion.

Raika smash one or two.”

I held up two fingers.

Then dramatically slapped them down.

“But Lionheart?” I grunted.

“Lionheart… BIG FIGHT.”

I threw both arms into the air, splashing water everywhere.

“Raika smash thousand!

Ten Thousand!

Many yellow kitten die!

Blood!

Guts!

XP!

GLORY!!”

I stomped my foot like a tribal chieftain, making the water splash all around us, and added with a growl, “If Raika no rest now… Raika tired before BIG BATTLE.”

There was a moment of silence.

A long, awkward moment.
