Chapter 96: The Agony

The sound of a car key lock beep echoed through the basement parking lot. Renar pinched the bridge of his nose as he walked toward the elevator doors.

His head pounded, blood pressure spiked from the adrenaline rush after god knows how many laps around the highway.

But his steps came to a halt the moment he spotted a figure he least expected. A woman crouched, leaning against the wall in front of the elevator.

His jaw tightened as he looked away, ignoring the woman with shoulder-length black hair who greeted him with a sweet smile.

"What are you doing here?" Renar asked coldly when the woman stood beside him by the elevator.

He didn’t press his fingerprint on the scanner yet, which would’ve opened the lift instantly.

"I rang the bell, and Muffy said you weren’t home yet. So I waited here," she replied cheerfully, her soft voice and gaze fixed on him.

"We both know that’s not what I meant." His voice stayed cold, now edged with annoyance.

The woman chuckled. "Renar... this isn’t you. It’s funny how cold you’ve become to me. Are you really—"

"Reia! Cut the bullshit. I’m not in the damn mood for your stupid jokes," Renar snapped, his voice sharp.

The sweet smile on Reia’s face vanished in an instant.

"She’s not your woman, so why the cheap act at the restaurant? Was it just to make me jealous?"

Renar turned to her. "Why the hell would I want to make you jealous? What do you think we even are?"

Reia turned to face him, her eyes pleading as she reached for his arm.

"Renar, it’s been almost two years since that incident. Can’t you just stop being angry at me? Haven’t I suffered enough?"

"Who’s punishing you?" Renar scoffed. "Like you said, I had no right. We were nothing. I never asked you to return my feelings back then, but why? Why the hell did you drag Caelum into your game? Was it fun for you, playing with both of us?"

"And was that entirely my fault? You stood me up on my birthday just because some lab rat of yours died. How the hell was I supposed to believe your feelings for me were ever real?"

Renar’s gaze flickered, something inside him snapped, like she had just said the one thing he never wanted to hear.

That wasn’t just some ordinary lab rat. But what was the point in explaining that to her now? He smirked bitterly.

"Yeah... maybe I was just an egoistic bastard. Lucky you, not being with someone like me. So why are you still here?"

"Renar... please... can’t we just forget the past and start fresh?" Reia’s grip on his arm tightened, and Renar reflexively shook her off.

"I don’t have time for that. My life’s already busy as it is. And I’ll have even less time for you."

"I’ll do better, you know? My term in Parliament ends this year. I can be by your side when you enter Parliament next. And... we could get married."

That had been the original plan. Renar had imagined it all; the moment Reia became a Parliament member and he earned his license as a plastic surgeon.

That was the plan... until he caught Reia and Caelum kissing passionately, or worse, more than a year ago.

"You’re not my mate, Reia. And now I’ve found the one. So let’s end... whatever this unclear thing between us is." This only fueled his desire, hoping the test result would prove Lethia was his fated mate.

Renar pressed his thumb to the fingerprint scanner, and the elevator doors slid open. He stepped in, turning back just in time to see Reia looking like she was about to cry.

"And... let’s not drag this out any longer. I’m sorry if I ever hurt you. I’ve already forgiven you too. So let’s just... be casual about it."

With that, the doors began to close slowly. Just before they clicked shut, Reia’s hand blocked them. The doors slid open again.

Reia suddenly shoved Renar’s body against the elevator wall and kissed him hard, full of agony and raw, choking passion.

Renar gasped, startled, and immediately tried to push her away, but Reia wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.

He growled in pure contempt.

Reia had used her she-wolf strength, forcing Renar to summon his own power just to break free from her grip, and he finally did.

"For your grace’s sake, Reia, have you lost your fucking mind? Are you really stooping this low?" Renar panted in fury, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Casual?" she hissed. "You were mine to begin with, Renar. We never care about that fated mate bullshit. You can’t just toss me aside like this."

She picked up her bag that had fallen into the elevator track, keeping the doors wide open.

"My grace?" she snapped with a bitter smile. "I’ll find that once I make you mine." Reia stormed out of the lift, her heels clicking with defiance.

Renar watched her back vanish with a gaze full of disgust and loathing as the doors slid shut at last.

Lethia stretched lazily on the soft-plush bed that smelled faintly of lavender. Her eyes fluttered open, catching the morning sunlight streaming through the window.

The curtains looked intentionally drawn just enough to let the light in without blinding her, considering she had slept facing the window.

She felt completely relaxed, her body still melting into the softness beneath her. She couldn’t even recall the last time she’d slept that deeply, dreamless and uninterrupted, waking up feeling fresh.

But then, as if something struck her, her eyes snapped open.

She turned her head to the side—no one was there. Her shoulders dropped in relief. Of course, Zeran hadn’t been lying next to her all night. That’d be ridiculous... right?

Not long after her bath, a maid arrived to assist her with clothing. Lethia blinked in confusion as the maid opened the wardrobe, revealing rows of new outfits—tops, bottoms, nightwear, even underwear—all surprisingly in her exact size.

Her expression didn’t show awe, only a chill crawling down her spine. This wasn’t just thoughtful. This was a new level of stalking. How the hell did he know her size down to her underwear?
