Possessed Wolfless: From Rejected to Vengeful Lycans' Queen-Chapter 66: His Past
Chapter 66: His Past
Lethia grew tense, noticing Renar’s serious expression.
Hesitantly, she placed her arm on the table, rubbing the back of her right ear with her fingers as she said, "Umm... that you guys are more civilized despite your beast nature, and that you don’t give a damn about fated mates, choosing your own instead."
"Is that all?" he asked, raising a brow.
"Um... hell of a lot of money and blessed with looks beyond average?"
Renar smirked, accepting her words. "Well, what you said is the persona our ancestors wanted you to believe. Even most Lycans think that. But the truth is... we’re just cursed creatures of the Moon Goddess."
Lethia frowned, not quite understanding Renar’s meaning. But before she could ask, a waiter, smelling like a half-breed, arrived with her order of roasted duck.
The sizzling sound of hoisin-pineapple sauce pouring over the duck on the hot plate filled the air, releasing a cloud of steam.
The scent brushed against her nose, a sweet, salty, and tangy combination that made Lethia swallow as a growl stirred in her stomach.
She was sure the pressure she felt was her baby growling at the smell, too.
While slicing her duck slowly, Lethia asked, "So, what kind of curse are you talking about?"
Renar let out a deep, long sigh before answering. His eyes stared into Lethia’s, as if seriously considering whether he could share this with her.
"The Moon Goddess cursed us so we couldn’t find our fated mates because the Lycans sided with humans during the werewolf-human war centuries ago.
It didn’t really bother us much, until 30 years ago, when our Lycan senses got fucked up by the pheromones of female werewolves in heat.
It drove us into uncontrollable beast mode. It was a disaster. That’s why my father invented the Unbonding Pill."
Lethia blinked, listening carefully to Renar, though her mouth was still busy chewing on the roasted duck. "So, basically, every time you guys are near a werewolf in heat, you turn into beasts?"
Renar chuckled, "Yeah... basically. The scent’s so overwhelming and intoxicating to our senses, it just drives us out of control.
But, because of the Unbonding Pill, we can find our fated mates. Like what happened with my grandfather and Zeran’s mother.
The Unbonding Pill doesn’t stop the fated mate scent. From there, our research continued, and we found a way to detect fated mates through complementary chromosomal patterns in their blood.
I wouldn’t hesitate to call you my fated mate if it were only me who could smell your scent. I did the test because Caelum and Zeran can smell you too."
Lethia took a sip of her drink, her throat feeling more constricted by Renar’s explanation than by the duck on her plate. "Ah, that’s why Zeran is your uncle, even though you guys are the same age. And yeah, I found it funny that you two were born on the same day."
Renar smirked and lowered his gaze, sighing as if holding back something. "That’s actually kinda good. Didn’t waste time or money celebrating our birthdays every year when we were kids."
"And how about female Lycans? Callista told me about your Unbonding Pill, and she needed the Havenish Tube. Do you guys have a different curse?"
Renar rolled his eyes and chuckled in disbelief. "No, it’s the same curse, but our biology works differently. The females still need the Unbonding Pill, like the males, but..."
"But?" Lethia asked, her curiosity piqued.
"I know she already told you what kind of tube that is. Female Lycans are the worst when they’re in heat." Renar finished his explanation with a smirk that carried a thousand meanings as he sipped his black coffee gracefully.
"So, all of that’s a secret? Why are you telling me, then?"
"Will you run your mouth around?" Renar flashed a thin smile and continued, "Let’s just say I’m sure you’re my fated mate. I don’t even know why I keep getting emotional around you. Like I said before, you’re the first who’s made me stop reasoning about everything."
Lethia almost choked as she bit into the duck drumstick, causing Renar to pat her back and tell her to drink. Why did he have to flirt with her while she was eating?
"Well, since I don’t like history, I might forget everything you said entirely. So, no need to worry."
The sky had darkened, visible through the glass window beside Lethia. She continued eating slowly, but a sense of discomfort wrapped around her as she could feel Renar’s intense gaze on her ever since he’d stopped eating.
"Will you still meet with Caelum?" Renar suddenly asked, causing Lethia to pause her eating and wipe her mouth with a napkin.
"I was wondering when you’d ask me about that. You know, for someone who says he likes me, you’ve been way too calm ever since that night when you knew exactly what I did with him."
Renar clenched his jaw. "So, will you?"
"Yes," Lethia answered shortly, making Renar’s brow twitch.
"I need him, and I need you. I want to talk to both of you directly, but this isn’t the right time. I need to focus on my physical test first. After I pass as an executive aide, I want us to..."
Lethia paused for a moment, wondering if her next word would piss him off even more. "...go camping."
Renar scoffed in disbelief. "To go where? Camping, you say? The three of us?"
Lethia nodded firmly. "Yes, I’ve already found a campsite that’s perfect for—"
"Lethia! Do I look like the kind of man who’d go camping with the woman he likes along with the other bastard who tried to woo her?" Renar raised his voice enough to make the person at the next table turn and stare, leaving Lethia stunned.
"I—what I mean is, we can talk, all three of us, with a clear head if we’re somewhere in nature. Because what I want to talk about is important."
"And what the hell is that? Why don’t you just tell me now?"
"I... I don’t want to explain it twice, back and forth, trying to persuade both of you about what I need to say. You know I’m pregnant, my heat is fluctuating like crazy, and my energy is limited." Lethia’s irritation was crystal clear from the way her voice started rising.
"You—"
"Renar?"
A soft, melodic female voice called Renar’s name from behind Lethia, making her reflexively turn her head, her mouth falling open.
