Chapter 64: Embarrassment (2)

"Oh no, did the sun rise from the west? I must be blessed today, hearing a joke from Doctor Renar of all people."

The older nurse named Carol burst into louder laughter, her whole body shaking from it, while the younger one only giggled with her hand covering her mouth, blushing like a schoolgirl.

Meanwhile, Renar, with that annoyingly blank face and fake-cool attitude, turned back to face the elevator doors, adjusting the collar of his doctor’s coat like nothing just happened.

Lethia was completely speechless.

She could only force a smile while Carol’s boisterous laugh rang in her ears. No way in hell did she want anyone to know she was even closely acquainted with Renar. Deep down, she’d have rather walked out and taken the emergency stairs instead.

While the two nurses kept whispering and giggling to themselves, practically drooling over Renar’s existence, Lethia’s fingers swiftly pulled up her chat with him.

Lethia: What are you doing? Why are you picking me up? I told you before we would meet at the parking lot, right?

She glanced at him, watching as Renar pulled his phone out from his white coat pocket, checked the screen, and then, like an absolute tease, shoved it back without replying. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

Lethia stared down at her phone. Nothing. No reply.

Her frown deepened as she gripped her phone tightly in frustration, then shoved it into the pocket of her skirt with a huff.

She knew it. He was doing this on purpose. Just to mess with her. To make her lose her patience.

Ding!

The elevator doors opened again. Still six floors away from the basement parking.

A small crowd of around six or seven patients, doctors, and nurses pushed their way in, cramming the space and making Lethia instinctively press her back against the wall, alert and on edge.

But what made her hold her breath and tense her neck wasn’t the sudden crowd pressing into the elevator—it was Renar, who suddenly turned to face her and placed both hands on the elevator’s armrest, caging Lethia in.

Her reflexes kicked in, and she slapped her palm flat against his broad chest, startled, thinking for a second he was about to kiss her.

That position aligned her gaze perfectly with Renar’s Adam’s apple.

She could see it bobbing up and down—a teasing show right in her line of sight, reacting to the strain on his back from the weight of the crowd pressing behind him.

It was like something ripped out straight from a short drama on social media—and now she was living it. Her heart was pounding so wildly she was sure he would hear it.

Honestly, if Renar was doing this to protect her from the crowd... it was completely unnecessary.

There was still space between her and the others, no one was crushing her.

But now? With her palm right there—feeling the rise and fall of his chest, his muscles heaving with every breath—it wasn’t pressure from the crowd that made her chest tighten.

Her cheeks flushed, growing warmer as she fumbled, unsure what the hell to do with her own damn hand anymore.

Lethia shot a glare at Renar’s brown, woody eyes—only to find them locked onto her with full intent, a smug smirk playing on his lips like he was thoroughly enjoying her flustered mess.

She could only frown, snapping her gaze away and hurriedly dropping her hand, desperate not to keep feeling the hard tension of his body under her fingers.

Not long after, the doors opened at the lobby floor. The crowd thinned out, and it was just the two of them left—Renar and Lethia alone as the elevator headed for the basement.

He finally released his caging grip, but silence fell thick and awkward between them.

When they stepped out of the elevator, Renar walked ahead to the car first. Lethia stayed behind, glancing cautiously around to see if anyone had seen them.

Only when she was sure no one was watching did she rush after him, sliding quickly into the passenger seat.

"Why are you so adamant we’re being secretive like this? Is this supposed to be some kind of secret love affair?" Renar chuckled as he pressed the pedal, the car speeding away from Terenian Hospital.

"I told you I didn’t want to catch attention. So why the hell did you pick me up right at the OB-GYN clinic? You could’ve just waited in the car. And on top of that, couldn’t you at least reply to my message so I didn’t feel like I got left on read?"

Renar burst out laughing at her barrage of complaints, which earned him a killer glare from Lethia, because she was not joking around.

"What’s so damn funny?" Lethia yelped, clearly pissed.

"You," Renar replied through his chuckles. "You’re hilarious. I feel like I’m getting scolded by a yappy girlfriend."

Lethia rolled her eyes, fed up. "Ugh... I might as well be talking to a brick wall," she muttered under her breath, throwing her gaze out the window while resting her elbow on the door and propping her head up with her fingers.

Renar found her frustration far too entertaining. He tried to suppress another burst of laughter and said, "First of all, I didn’t pick you up. You do know my office is right above the OB-GYN clinic, right? We just happened to cross paths in the elevator."

Lethia flinched for a second.

It felt like someone slapped her in the face with a wet towel.

She clenched her jaw and bit her lower lip, trying hard not to look at him out of sheer embarrassment.

’Why the hell did I forget his office is upstairs?’

"And about your unread message—"

"Are we not there yet?" she cut him off quickly. "Oh Renar, can you please go faster? We need to get the shopping done soon if we want to make it to the dinner place I’ve been eyeing."

And just like that, she switched tones without missing a beat.

"And about the message," she continued, voice sweet and suspiciously calm, "I know you didn’t mean to leave it on read, so it’s fine. I really don’t mind. No need to explain it more."

She forced the widest fake grin from ear to ear and cut him off again before he could speak, because she needed to slam the emergency exit on her own embarrassment.
