Chapter 43: Sin in a Whisper

"One... two... three... blow out the candle, dear!"

The broad-shouldered man with a greying beard held the birthday cake steady in both hands, the candle shaped like a number nine flickering softly on top.

With a big smile blooming on her tiny lips, Lethia leaned forward and blew the candle out.

"Alright... congratulations, dear. Daddy will always give you the best in this world, my princess." He scooped the little girl into a warm embrace as she sat on the white chair.

They stayed there, tangled in each other’s arms, and little Lethia looked so happy with her hazel eyes sparkling with joy.

Her golden hairclip clamped onto her bangs made her look even more darling. Her tiny hands patted her father’s arm again and again, too excited to sit still.

Then he pulled a gift box from a bag nearby and handed it to her.

"Whoaa... a gift for me?"

"Yes, dear... a gift for you. Open it."

Young Lethia peeled the box open, and the moment she saw what was inside, her whole face lit up, grinning wide from ear to ear. Her small fingers reached in and pulled out a red scarf nestled inside.

Her father beamed, just as delighted to see his only daughter glowing with joy. He reached out to help wrap the scarf gently around her neck.

"It’s pretty," she chirped, her cheerful voice like a little melody that made him grin even wider.

"Pretty things just for my pretty angel. Look, see here? Your name’s stitched right in, so if it ever gets lost, it’ll find its way back to you."

He pointed to the embroidery at the edge of the scarf that show Lethia A., and the little girl burst into a fit of giggles.

A moment later, someone tapped her father on the shoulder and gestured him to talk aside.

"Sweetheart, Daddy needs to go over there for a bit. You wait here, yeah? Later, we’ll go play in that park."

He pointed at the playground just across from the café, where a few kids were already laughing and running around.

Lethia pouted, clearly not happy about being left alone. But her father reassured her it’d only be for a short while, then walked away, leaving Lethia sitting by herself.

’Dad... Don’t go!’ The little girl could only whimper those words in her heart.

’Dad... Don’t go!’

’No... Dad... Don’t go! Don’t leave me alone... Dad!’

[Girl! Wake up! Ugh... Is she really that exhausted? Oui! Wake up, you!!]

"Dad... dad..."

[Huh? Dreaming? Oh God! Girl! Wake up! This is no time for a sad dream, save it for later!]

"Dad... Dad... DAD!!" Lethia screamed, bolting upright in bed.

Her mouth hung open, gasping for air, her breath shaky and uneven. Cold sweat trickled down from her forehead to her temples.

Lethia was panting hard and her mind spiraling as her eyes scanned her surroundings in confusion. But what confused her more was the tension rippling through her body, making her lower belly burn with heat. She wasn’t even having a wet dream—so why?

She was sitting on a king-sized bed with a dark-green bedsheet that made her think she was in a bedroom.

But the furniture, the trophies lining the shelves, the way every corner oozed unfamiliarity, it hit her fast. This wasn’t her room. And it sure as hell wasn’t Renar’s.

The room was way too spacious for a regular penthouse. That alone told her this couldn’t possibly be Renar’s place.

["You’re awake now?"]

’Whisney, where are we?’

["Don’t be surprised. Just... look behind you."]

Lethia turned around, following Whisney’s instruction, and her eyes widened in shock.

Covering the entire back wall behind the bed was a super big poster—no, a literal mural—of Caelum. Full-body. Shirtless. An impossible temptation to ignore.

"What..." Lethia was completely speechless, staring at the absurdly sinful view that nearly made her drool.

She quickly turned back around and rubbed her forehead in disbelief.

’How the hell did we end up here?’

["You don’t remember fainting?"]

Lethia clutched at her chest, trying to piece it all together. The last thing she remembered was being in Callista’s office, then the sudden, unbearable pain in her chest, like her heart had just stopped.

And in that final flash before everything went black... she remembered seeing him. The man with silver hair, Caelum.

Still dizzy and disoriented, Lethia climbed down from the bed. Her legs wobbled as she walked toward the window and pulled the curtain open, only to find a garden view under a darkening sky. From the height, she guessed she was on the second or third floor.

She made her way to the door, but her steps abruptly froze. She tried to walk, to move forward, but her body wouldn’t obey.

’Whisney, why?’

["Where do you think you’re going?"]

’Out, obviously!’

["Just wait here. He’ll be back soon."]

And then—completely against her own will—Lethia turned and walked back to the bed, sitting down stiffly.

’Why don’t we just go find him and get the hell out of this room?’

["And go where? Did you forget your promise? You owe me. You said I could place my last bead in Caelum’s heart if I helped you with your test!"]

’Now? Oh for fuck’s sake. I literally just fainted and you want me to get intimate with him?!’

["Hmm... I think the reason you fainted came from your pup. I felt the energy shift too, it threw me deep into your subconscious right in that moment. And when I got back, your pup’s energy was burning hot... like actual fire."]

’Why? What happened? Is it okay now?’ Lethia darted her gaze worriedly.

["I don’t know what happened because all I could do with it is shield its spirit by transferring energy. I couldn’t speak to it. But it’s stable now."]

Lethia finally regained control of her body. She scratched her head in frustration, glaring as if the fox could see her irritation.

’That’s all the more reason why I should go now, and take it to a doctor.’

["I told you, your pup’s fine now. Go after we place the bead in Caelum. And you don’t even need to get intimate to do it—just... close enough to hover your mouth near his. But hey, if you wanna go full-on intimate, I’m not stopping you. The sooner, the better for my tails, Ha ha ha..."]

"Bitch!" Lethia scowled. Her body still felt a little off-balance, but her breathing and heartbeat had steadied.

Besides, she had no clue where the hell she was or how to get back to Renar’s penthouse. So, for now, she’d just go along with the damn fox’s plan—might as well get that cursed bead planted in Caelum’s body while she was at it.

The sound of the door opening made her glance up—and there he was.

Caelum stepped in, wearing a loose white V-neck shirt that dipped low enough to tease the sculpted lines of his chest, and baggy pants that somehow still managed to show off his stupidly perfect height. His whole presence screamed stardom.

But what really knocked the breath out of her lungs was the way his sage-green eyes met hers. Gentle. Intent. That smile, the same heart-melting curve she’d seen a hundred times in the media, was now aimed directly at her.

"Are you awake, my queen?"

His low, honeyed tone was sin in a whisper, shooting straight down her spine.
