Chapter 112: Surprising Bills

"A–Ad—"

"Sshhh..."

Adam clamped his hand over Chasey’s mouth, pressing her body harder against his until she nestled into the crook of his neck.

Her heartbeat thundered so violently it blurred her mind, her thoughts drowned in the raw masculinity of Adam’s scent.

It had been days since Chasey had kept her distance. She could’ve just taken the unbonding pill, but she craved the intoxicating scent of Adam so much. Still, not this close. This kind of closeness tore through her defences in a snap.

Adam released her mouth and pulled away slightly. He let out a long sigh. "She’s gone. That’s why I told you to—"

His words stopped short when he noticed the way Chasey stared blankly at him. He waved a hand in front of her face. "Hey... Chasey..."

But she didn’t flinch. Didn’t even blink.

Adam gripped her arms and gave her a slight shake. Finally, her eyes flickered and locked with his.

"Why the hell have you been zoning out like this lately? Focus, Chasey. You need to focus!"

He resumed walking after making sure Amy was completely gone.

"Adam, don’t you—"

Her phone rang. She grabbed it from her pocket, annoyed by the interruption—until she saw who it was. Her Queen. She picked up instantly.

After a brief conversation, Chasey let out a deep breath. "I’ll go to the Queen myself this evening," she said, deliberately avoiding his gaze.

"But I’ve got work—"

"I can go alone. You don’t have to come." She brushed past him.

"Chasey, what the hell is going on with you lately? You’re not acting like yourself."

She turned back to him with a look that nearly split his chest. That deep, aching kind of yearning.

"Try not taking the unbonding pill. Just for one day. And we should hang out on that day."

Adam walked up to Chasey and brushed the back of his hand against her forehead.

"You need to go to the infirmary. You look sick. You should take better care of yourself as an aide. Tsk tsk tsk..."

He turned around and walked away, shaking his head, leaving her standing there alone.

That behaviour made Chasey clench her fists, trying to hold back the tightness pressing hard in her chest.

Right. What was even the point of telling him they shared a mate bond? A Beta like Adam, with that flat, unreadable way of feeling, would never care about something like that.

With quick, deliberate steps, Chasey caught up to him and bumped her shoulder against his as she passed by.

She needed to focus on her Queen for now.

"Oh, Queen, this massage chair is better than the one in the aide dorm. Can’t I just live here and become your aide instead?"

Chasey let out a blissful sigh, eyes fluttering shut, sinking into the massage chair as it rippled soothingly up and down her back.

Lethia, sitting at the edge of her bed, ignored her. Her brows were furrowed, thumb hovering in a restless pace above her phone as she scrolled through the photos Chasey had sent in their private chat room.

Some photos showed Varrel’s campaign schedule and a list of venues where he would give speeches or make public appearances for charity.

She chuckled under her breath—Varrel doing charity work? That was laughable.

She couldn’t help but wonder what the bastard was really planning, pretending to be some wise-hearted Alpha all of a sudden.

Even when Lethia had organised a free cheese festival, Varrel had banned it, and they’d ended up commercialising the annual cheese festival at Ashcroft Ranch instead.

But the moment her thumb slid to the next photo, her frown deepened.

"An OB-GYN clinic and a brothel bill?"

The question made Lethia lift the image closer, while Chasey’s eyes shot wide open. She immediately straightened her back into a rigid sit.

"Ah, Queen, I think I can smell something foul from those two bills," Chasey muttered, leaning in and sitting down beside her.

"Is it because both bills have the same date?" Lethia asked, still zooming in on the photo to check the finer details.

"That’s one reason. But the stronger one is that it looked like Amy deliberately separated those bills from the others, which made me suspicious."

Lethia turned to her. "Amy?"

Chasey pouted. "Yeah... that bitch who tried being all friendly with me just to get close to Adam," she huffed, irritated. "I thought I could get some dirt from her without doing a crime. But I couldn’t handle the way she kept flirting with Adam. Ugh."

Lethia frowned. "Crime? What did you do?"

Chasey just grinned wider, throwing her a sly side-eye. "You don’t need to know about the dirty hands, Queen. I’ve got a solid partner in crime. So don’t worry too much."

Lethia found herself feeling genuinely grateful. At first, she had promised something to Chasey and Adam just to get them on her side. But seeing how far Chasey was willing to go for her... it softened her heart. Maybe it was time to finally consider them both as friends.

Lethia exhaled slowly. "Have you told Adam yet? About your bond?"

Chasey’s grin dropped at once. Her face sank as she let out a heavy sigh. "Don’t get me started, Queen. I’m still suffering alone."

Lethia hesitated before lifting her hand and placing it gently on Chasey’s shoulder, patting her with quiet care, like she knew no words could ease that sting.

Feeling Lethia’s gentle taps, Chasey responded with a soft smile. "So... what I gathered might actually be something important, right?" she asked with hopeful eyes.

Lethia nodded. "Even though it’s still blurry, it might lead to something. Someone as meticulous as Varrel going to places like these on the same day? That’s no coincidence."

"Well... could it be his mistress is pregnant? But why would they go to some tiny, nameless clinic? That’s weird," Chasey murmured.

"These bills really are surprising," Lethia admitted. "Maybe I’ve been deceived, or I never really knew him that well. But this... this isn’t his style at all. You’ve got an excellent nose. I think we might just sniff out something properly filthy from this."

Lethia smiled in satisfaction, and Chasey beamed right back, grinning widely like a kid catching her first prey. Then she stood up and strutted her way back to the massage chair, her hips swaying in a cheeky little dance, ready to sink back into her relaxation.

But just as Chasey plopped down, Lethia stood up instead, stepped toward her, and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

"You need to get off that chair and come with me," she said firmly.

"Huh? Where?"

"To max out a card’s limit," Lethia grinned, waving Zeran’s black card with a sly glint in her eyes.
