56 -52: Ambush

Luo’er was the first to recover from the chaos of the overturned carriage.

He clung to his gun and strained to climb out of the cart.

Semi-crouching on the ground, he pushed the gun’s safety to the bottom and pulled the trigger continuously in the general direction of the gunfire.

After a few brief bursts of fire, a crossbow bolt flew over from somewhere, hitting the overturned cart.

Looking at the trembling tail of the arrow, Luo’er knew they couldn’t stay here; their location was all too obvious.

He waved his hand and commanded loudly, “Everyone, retreat into the jungle!

Little Ke, prepare to suppress the enemy’s fire and cover our retreat!”

With that said, he made a rough shot in the general direction indicated by the crossbow bolt.

Arrows kept coming, hitting the cart.

In such an ambush, the advantage of the bow and crossbow is clear.

The rifleman could hardly locate the bowmen based on the direction of the arrows, but the bowmen could roughly determine the location of the riflemen based on the sound of their gunfire.

Despite this, Luo’er needed to maintain sufficient firepower.

Long influenced by Earth’s tactics, he understood that firepower superiority was much more useful than precise shooting in a melee.

Hu Daoke climbed out of the cart with his machine gun, lay down beside Luo’er, pulled the trigger a few times, and found it did not fire.

He checked and found the safety was still on.

Turning it off, he set up his machine gun and fired in the direction where Luo’er was shooting.

“Da-da-da-da-da!” The light machine-gun roared fiercely, bullets poured towards the direction of its aim, and for a moment, wood chips and leaves flew all around, occasionally tree branches were abruptly broken off and drooped down.

“Burst fire, burst fire!” The overwhelming noise deafened Luo’er, and he reached out to press down on Hu Daoke’s machine gun, shouting loudly at him.

Hu Daoke nodded and began to fire in three to four round bursts.

Luo’er reloaded the magazine and continued to suppress in another direction.

“Bang-bang-bang-bang!” More gunshots echoed from the jungle, hitting the trunks near them.

By now, Luo’er was entirely sure that the other party had indeed brought firearms from Earth.

He patted Hu Daoke’s shoulder.

The latter nodded and began to shoot in the direction of the gunfire.

Meanwhile, he turned around and urged his teammates to leave the cart and hide in the jungle.

Baiyue slung her rifle across her back and helped the dazed Tangmo move away from the carriage.

In this kind of jungle encounter, as a sniper, she wouldn’t play a significant role.

Therefore, Luo’er as the rifleman and Hu Daoke as the support hand were relied on for fire suppression.

Once everyone had retreated from the cart, Luo’er patted Hu Daoke’s shoulder, and the latter tacitly nodded, rose, and carried his machine gun into the jungle.

Luo’er then took his place and continued the suppression.

Hiding in the jungle, Hu Daoke looked for a place to set up his machine gun, but the dense bushes in the forest made it challenging.

Lying down would obstruct his view, so he had to hold his machine gun, lean against a tree trunk, and carry on the suppression.

Upon hearing his gunfire, Luo’er ceased covering and turned to run towards the forest, crouching low.

A flurry of arrows continued to come from the other side of the road, occasionally pinning into the cart and tree trunks.

As soon as Luo’er ran into the jungle, Tangmo pointed at the cart and anxiously said, “Luo’er, he…”

Luo’er turned his head and found the coachman still lying on the ground, unable to move as the overturned horse corpse pinned his leg.

Luo’er clenched his teeth and loudly told Baiyue, “Cover me!”

With that, he propped the rifle on his shoulder, pulled the magic wand from his waist, and ran to the coachman.

Upon arriving, Luo’er assessed the situation.

The overturned cart blocked the sight from the opposite side to some degree, perfectly covering him and the coachman.

So, he started to move the horse’s corpse and extract the coachman’s pinned leg.

An arrow pinned into a beam of the cart, its tail quivering.

Seeing this, Luo’er quickly recited the incantation for the shield magic, which rose and shielded both him and the coachman.

He grabbed the collar of the coachman’s clothes, and while murmuring the spell, he strained to pull him out from under the horse’s body, then dragged him into the jungle by the roadside.

“Missile incoming!”

The robust alert came from Hu Daoke, who was providing covering fire.

A missile was seen swishing over with a long tail towards the group.

As soon as Luo’er managed to drag the person into the jungle, someone forcefully grabbed his collar from behind and placed him in the bushes.

The missile flew over their heads and hit a stout ancient tree not far away.

The spewed metal jet ignited it instantaneously, shooting burning wood chips all around.

The old tree was cut off at the waist, moaning as it slowly fell.

Taking advantage of the lull when everyone was still trying to recover, Baiyue had locked onto the enemy’s RPG shooter.

She rose with her rifle, aiming at a spot in the distance between the bushes.

At the moment of the missile launch, she saw elusive shadows in that location.

“Bang!” Baiyue pulled the trigger again, and a distant figure fell to the ground moaning.

Her precise sniping again reduced the enemy’s numbers.

She initially intended to continue looking for the enemy, but the enemy’s continuous gunfire forced her to crouch down and hide behind a tree trunk.

The opponent’s frantic shooting led Luo’er to believe that they likely possessed semi-automatic weaponry.

The enemy’s gunfire drew Hu Daoke’s attention.

He brushed the debris off his head, picked up the light machine gun again, and started firing at the source of the gunfire.

The concentrated rain of bullets swept across, devastating every plant in its path, truly terrifying.

“Hu Daoke!” Luo’er, who had crawled up from the ground during Hu Daoke’s gunfire interval, called out to him loudly.

“Yes!” He answered without looking back.

“Set your firing range from nine to twelve o’clock and fire at any suspicious targets!” Luo’er ordered loudly.

“Understood!”

“Yue’er!” Luo’er shouted.

Baiyue didn’t respond, but turned to look at him.

“From six to nine o’clock is your firing range, shoot at any suspicious targets!”

Baiyue nodded, turning towards the six o’clock direction.

“Cheng Ziang, I leave our rear to you!” Luo’er shouted loudly, knowing that he was equipped with close combat blades, but at this point, the only one he could rely on was Cheng Ziang.

“Then what about me?” Tangmo pointed to himself and asked.

“You keep an eye on him!” Luo’er said, pointing at the trembling coachman who was crouched on the ground.

“What about you?” She continued to ask.

“I’ll deal with this guy!” Luo’er said, replacing his empty magazine with another one.

Just after a short round of exchange of fire, he had already exhausted two magazines.

Hu Daoke, who was the support gunner, had consumed even more ammunition, he was already swapping his second ammo box.

Luo’er carefully peered out and immediately faced a few hurried shots.

Judging from the sound of the guns, the enemy should be positioned between one and two o’clock.

“I’ll take him out, watch our firing range, adjust the firing range according to my whistle.

Understand?” Luo’er leaned against the tree trunk, shouting out instructions to his team.

“Roger!”

Hu Daoke nodded his head.

When fighting in this dense jungle, avoiding friendly fire was paramount.

Since Luo’er insisted on striking first, he would have to constantly adjust the firing angle according to Luo’er’s position to avoid hurting his own team.

Luo’er crouched down, running with his gun towards the direction of the gunfire.

His position was exposed by the dense bushes between the trees, and the enemy quickly opened fire on him.

“Bang! freēnovelkiss.com

Bang!

Bang!”

A series of rhythmic gunshots whizzed past his head, halting his advance.

He leaned against the thick tree trunk, retaliating towards the direction of the gunfire.

After firing about half a magazine, Luo’er clearly noted that the enemy was trying to change his position, so he immediately got up and continued to chase.

He rushed through the bushes, disregarding the hindering undergrowth.

He quickly closed the distance with his opponent and he could clearly see a figure moving in the woods not far away.

The other side seemed to have realized his intention and turned around to open fire on him again.

“Bang!

Bang!

Bang!” Another burst of rapid gunfire.

Luo’er stumbled and was tripped by a tree root, crashing into a bush.

Bullets whizzed past his head, giving rise to a chilling wind, causing his body to break out in a cold sweat.

Luo’er lay on the ground without moving.

Thinking he had been hit, the enemy stopped running and instead stayed to observe.

Through the gaps in the bushes, Luo’er noticed the enemy’s foolish intention.

He lay on the ground, carefully poking the muzzle of his rifle out of the bushes, then pulled the trigger.

“Bang!

Bang!

Bang!”

A burst of rapid firing, Luo’er could clearly see the enemy fell to the ground like a piece of wood, his weapon falling to the side.

He got up, holding his rifle, and quickly reached the fallen enemy.

It was a young Aud, tall and thin, dressed in tattered adventurer-style clothes.

His skills spoke volumes, he was not simple.

He had been hit in the shoulder and arm by two of Luo’er’s shots and there was a lot of bleeding.

He was holding his wound, groaning in pain.

Luo’er saw the weapon he was using.

It was not the semi-automatic rifle he had expected, but a Lee-Enfield rifle known for its firing rate.

The astonishing quick fire was therefore not surprising.

The enemy clearly didn’t notice Luo’er’s approach and was rolling on the ground in pain, uttering painful groans.

Luo’er looked at him, then looked at the rifle on the ground.

After a moment’s hesitation, he slowly turned back, leaning against the tree trunk, and replaced his magazine.

Soon, there was a rustling noise from the jungle again.

One of his companions appeared out of nowhere, saw his painful expression and quickly bent down to help him up.

Another appeared from another direction, looked around and then tried to pick up the fallen rifle.

When Luo’er saw the right moment, he lunged out, aiming at the man who was about to pick up the rifle, and continuously pulled the trigger.

The enemy was hit in the chest and neck by his bullets and fell to the ground without uttering a sound.

Seeing this, the other man was about to drop his companion and run, but Luo’er adjusted his aim and pulled the trigger.

The bullet hit him right in the face, instantly blowing his head apart.

After confirming that the two of them were dead, Luo’er retreated back behind the tree waiting for the next batch of enemies to appear.

But it was evident that the enemy had reached their limit.

After waiting for a while, Luo’er decided to blow the rallying whistle.
