Chapter 146 - What Kind of Rookie Doesn't Go "Wild"?

Night arrived, painting the sky in shades of deep blue and black.

Down on the beach, a lively fire crackled, its warmth pushing back the evening chill.

Ace sat beside the flames, completely wrapped in bandages. A special brace held his neck steady, protecting his injured spine from further damage.

His crew members huddled nearby, their faces still pale with shock.

"We're so lucky to have gotten away from that!" one of them exclaimed, his voice trembling slightly.

"I had completely lost hope back there!" another added, shaking his head.

"Me too! That Black Hair guy was way too strong!" a third chimed in, his eyes wide.

"Who would have ever thought the Marines would ask our captain to become one of those Seven Warlords of the Sea?"

"Maybe this is just Ace's incredible luck showing itself!"

The crew glanced over at Ace, each remembering the terrifying moment when Black Hair had drawn his sword. They had all been ready to charge into battle then.

Even knowing it was likely suicide, they couldn't just stand by and watch their captain be taken.

But then, everything had changed in an instant. It was totally unexpected.

The gods must be smiling down on our captain today! the crew thought, feeling their spirits lift.

"Captain," one of them began, "are you actually thinking about accepting the Marine's offer?"

"Of course not! I have zero interest in becoming one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. I don't want to become famous in the world like that!" Ace said, rejecting the idea without hesitation.

The Seven Warlords of the Sea were known for their bad reputations. Being seen as lapdogs of the World Government was enough to make them social outcasts among pirates.

"But, Ace..." Deuce started, then paused, "If we don't agree to what the Marines want, that Black Hair guy isn't just going to let us go, right?"

"Then we'll just run," Ace said, shrugging as if it was no big deal.

It wasn't the first time they'd been chased by the Marines. Running was just part of their lives as pirates.

If we can't win, can we at least get away? Ace thought. What kind of pirate would let the Marines kill them without a fight?

Besides, he didn't really see Roya as an enemy anyway. There was no real reason to fight him to the death.

Ace perked up suddenly. "Hey, maybe we should sneak away right now!"

"Now?" the crew asked, surprised.

But the idea was tempting.

Their Log Pose was already charged, ready to guide them to the next island. Sneaking away in the dark of night seemed like a perfect plan.

Being on the same island as Black Hair was just too scary!

"Alright, everyone! Let's set sail!" Ace shouted, a grin spreading across his face.

"Ooooh!" the crew responded with enthusiasm.

----

Over in Mister Town, inside a cozy tavern near the port, Roya sat by a window. He was enjoying the local food and drinks, savoring each bite and sip.

Suddenly, the Den Den Mushi, a snail-like communication device, rang.

One of Roya's men, who was keeping an eye on the Spade Pirates, reported, "Rear Admiral Roya, the Spade Pirates are trying to escape!"

"Okay, I understand," Roya replied, hanging up the Den Den Mushi. He then went back to his meal as if nothing had happened.

Lu Yun, who was sitting across from him, rested her chin on her hand and asked curiously, "Senior, aren't we going to chase after them?"

"No need to rush. Let them run for a little while," Roya answered, taking a long sip of wine.

He had expected Ace to try to run away. He would have been surprised if the young pirate had actually accepted the Marines' offer.

Giving Ace half a day to think it over was just a way of giving him time to make his escape.

Roya picked up a napkin and wiped his mouth. He turned to Lu Yun and asked, "Lu Yun, what's our mission right now?"

"To recruit Fire Fist Ace?" she replied, starting to understand what Roya was planning.

"Exactly!" Roya grinned. "Since we're trying to recruit Fire Fist Ace, why would we rush? We're not trying to capture him. This is a really important mission that Marine Headquarters gave us. We need to be friendly!"

At first, Roya had been a little annoyed about the mission.

But then he realized that losing a bounty of two hundred million berries wasn't that big of a deal. There were plenty of pirates in the New World with bounties over one hundred million.

Following Ace into the dangerous New World, pretending to recruit him, was a much better opportunity.

I've wanted to do this for a long time, Roya thought. This is a golden opportunity!

As long as he didn't anger the Four Emperors, he didn't have to worry about any other powerful groups. Even if he ran into trouble with the Four Emperors, as long as he didn't start the fight, he could call for backup.

Of course, completing the mission was still important.

If Ace could become one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, it would be good for Roya, at least they would be closer.

Also, he didn't want Ace to join Whitebeard's crew.

What kind of future would he have as just a Second Division Commander? he mused.

As for the upcoming war, it was certain that things would change.

But the real point of the war was for the Marines to defeat the Whitebeard Pirates, crush the pirates' pride, and reassure the people of the world.

Ace's capture might force the Marines and Whitebeard into a war. But if the Marines didn't want a full-scale war, there were still ways to avoid it, like secretly executing Ace or keeping him locked up.

The world was becoming more chaotic, and the Marines needed a big win. Even without Ace's capture, another war was likely to happen eventually.

"Pass down the order," Roya said. "Everyone get a good night's rest. We'll leave at six o'clock tomorrow morning!"

"Yes, sir!"

The next day, right on time, the warship left the port at six in the morning, heading in the direction the Spade Pirates had taken.

Lu Yun held a screen similar to a laptop. The screen showed Winter Bear Island, a strange island with zebra-striped mountains.

While Roya and Ace had been fighting, she had sent one of her men to sneak a surveillance Den Den Mushi onto the Spade Pirates' ship.

Unless they found the Den Den Mushi, the Spade Pirates wouldn't be able to escape the 11th Division, no matter where they went.

"Rear Admiral Roya," Lu Yun announced, "the Spade Pirates are heading towards Winter Bear Island."

"Winter Bear Island?" Roya repeated, stroking his chin. The name sounded familiar.

Lu Yun reminded him quietly, "That's Pirate Emperor Kaido's territory!"

"That's a little troublesome," Roya frowned.

If I remember correctly, he thought, Ace wanted to challenge Whitebeard. He even fought Jinbe for five days straight. Why is he suddenly heading to Kaido's territory?

That kid wouldn't be thinking of challenging Kaido, would he?

"Senior, what should we do?" Lu Yun asked.

"What else can we do? Chase after them!" Roya said without hesitation.

The New World was basically controlled by the Four Emperors. If he was too afraid, he wouldn't be able to do anything. He could only try his best not to provoke Kaido.

"Oh, and check on Kaido's movements," Roya added.

"Understood," Lu Yun replied.

---

Meanwhile, on Winter Bear Island, inside a weapon factory, fully armed soldiers quickly found the island's leader, "Iron Boy" Scotch.

"Lord Scotch, we've spotted a pirate ship near the southern port!" one of them reported.

"Oh? Who is it?" Scotch asked.

"It's that famous rookie, Fire Fist Ace!"

"Fire Fist!" Scotch said, fiddling with his machine gun. His relaxed attitude vanished, replaced by seriousness. Supernovas were nothing to laugh at!

"Let's go! Let's go meet this Fire Fist!" he announced.

"Yes, sir!"

A few minutes later, Scotch and his men blocked the Spade Pirates' path.

"Rat-tat-tat-tat!"

A hail of bullets rained down in the snow, stopping the Spade Pirates from moving forward.

Scotch stopped firing, holding up his right hand, which had been modified into a gun. He didn't attack, but instead gave a polite warning.

"Rookie, this is Lord Kaido's island, and I'm in charge of guarding it," he announced.

"Oh? What do you want then?" Ace asked, staring at Scotch and trying to figure out how strong he was.

"I don't want anything," Scotch replied, shaking his head. "I just want to warn you, don't cause any trouble on this island. If you anger Lord Kaido, the consequences will be terrible."

"You mean if I beat you, Kaido won't let it go, right? Is that what you're saying?" Ace asked with a grin.

Scotch didn't realize how arrogant this rookie was. He said seriously, "That's right. If you understand, then leave now."

"Haha, that makes things easy!" Ace said, bursting into flames. "Fire Fist!!!"
