Chapter 140: Chapter 140 – You are the joker

Joanna remained calm as she tried to understand her contract husband better.

His no longer being in a wheelchair gave him an imposing aura, but that was okay because he was no longer as cold to her as before due to all they had been through, especially during their fake honeymoon.

"Edmund, I want you to send a query to Agnes through the King’s family file and withhold all her benefits as soon as you get to the office tomorrow," Alex instructed.

Aiden’s eyes widened as only he understood the depth of this instruction. Agnes was not given the time to prepare and would only wake up to see her money frozen.

"Yes, sir," Edmund responded from the end of the line. Aiden shook his head. "I wonder if Edmund sleeps. He can’t even have a girlfriend because of you."

Aiden’s words, though a joke, struck a chord in Alex. This was the reason he preferred working with men so he wouldn’t have all the pregnancy and menstrual cramp excuses, but the harsh reality was beginning to hit him hard.

"You are right. I need to set timelines for my assignments for him," Alex said. Aiden was stunned. Though they had a few women on the team, Alex treated them differently because of their roles in their homes, but the men were more available every time, making his work easy.

"Since when did you begin to care about your employees’ personal lives?" Aiden asked.

Alex did not like all the arrows being thrown at him and decided to divert the topic of discussion.

"I have to admit that you did so well in calming your girlfriend," he pointed out. Aiden frowned deeply and retorted.

"She isn’t my girlfriend," he quickly denied it. Joanna was not surprised due to what Violet had told her, but it was understandable.

The fact that they slept together once didn’t mean they had to have something going on when the attraction broke along the way.

Alex chuckled. "Is that so? Then I guess you should leave now. She’s stable, and I can let my wife take care of her."

He was testing the words of his best friend, and it indeed worked because Aiden refused to leave Violet’s side. "I started, and I would finish it." His voice was stern, laced with determination.

"Aiden, you like Violet, don’t you?" Alex asked for confirmation. Aiden frowned and shook his head. This wasn’t his first one-night stand, so what made Violet so special?

"No. I’m only taking care of her because she’s a best friend to your wife. She’s not my type of girl and can never be." His words were sharp, unknowingly stabbing the heart of the sleeping woman on the bed.

Joanna was saddened upon hearing Aiden’s words, and her anger burned towards him. "You are indeed a jerk," she murmured. Aiden’s face reddened.

She didn’t want her to hear all that, but that was the truth. Violet was not a decent girl in the case of men, and that was what he hated about her.

It wasn’t about her personality, but maybe their first meeting also mattered, coupled with how she dumped money on him.

It all added to his unwillingness to see anything good about her.

Unknown to them, Violet was conscious and did not want to interrupt the conversation.

Aiden’s words hurt her deeply, and the gratitude she was developing for him earlier dwindled.

"I will stay here, Alex, if you don’t mind," Joanna said, not deeming it right for Aiden to stay behind to take care of her best friend, but Aiden refused.

"You should go to your room. Violet isn’t a kid, and no one is going to hurt her."

Joanna was disappointed due to how she had profound respect for Aiden for Alex’s sake.

His true character was rather repulsive, and she could not allow her best friend to be close to anyone like that. "I don’t want her to be with a hater."

Aiden knew he had crossed the line, but to him, that was the truth of the whole matter, and he deemed it right to not lie about it.

"With all due respect, Mrs. King, I will take very good care of your best friend." His earnest words only worsened matters because Joanna saw them to be rather taunting.

However, since Aiden was her husband’s best friend, she was unable to argue anymore, hooking her arm to that of Alex as they left the room together.

Reaching the door, Alex remembered something and promptly turned around, informing Aiden. "Don’t forget we have to be at Joanna’s handing over too."

He felt that the little exchange of words between Aiden and Joanna might deter Aiden from showing up.

However, the fact was, that Aiden was also one of his most trusted men, so his beef with Violet could not make him act irrationally in controversial matters.

"I won’t miss it," Aiden assured him.

The next day in one of the King Multinational offices, the CEO had not arrived and was not planning to because he was preparing to accompany his wife in the evening to take over her Company.

Agnes was in the office when she received a formal letter from the CEO’s secretary.

The content of the letter caused the color to drain from her face. This was exactly what she feared, but Alex still got the CEO position to her dismay.

At the thought, she called Logan on the phone. "Logan, your brother removed my allowance because of the plan."

Expecting Logan to sympathize with her and propose a solution, she was dumbfounded by the response when Logan stared at the screen of the phone on his hospital bed.

"Who are you, and what are you talking about?" He sounded irritated, causing Agnes to frown deeply from the end of the line.

She thought it was a joke. "Logan, get serious," she said seriously, but Logan was at a loss but also upset and confused for a strange woman to call and demand stupid things like for him to get serious.

"You are the joker. If you don’t have anything better to say, then hang up. I want to sleep."

Agnes felt as if she was going to die. Her husband was not in cahoots with this bit after the honeymoon issue, so her only accomplice was Logan.

If he also gave up on her, then there was nothing else to do. "Sleep? Where are you, Logan?" She was clearing her desk to go meet up with him wherever he was and was stunned by the response.

"At the hospital, I think."

"Hospital? Doing what? Which hospital?" Agnes needed answers, but since she wasn’t getting them, there was only one way.

The Kings had their private health facility, so she would just meet up with Logan there.

"I’m coming over," she said, but a strange voice spoke in place of Logan. "Mr. Alexander King has forbidden any unauthorized person from seeing his brother."

She recognized the voice to be that of their family doctor and asked seriously. "What do you mean by that? I’m family," she retorted. Perhaps the doctor was not recognizing her voice, but his response meant he did.

"I’m sorry, but until Alex says otherwise, you cannot see Logan."

Agnes could not challenge the fact that Alex had been the one to give the order. He was now the CEO.

However, Grandpa was still the family head, so she dialed the old man’s number after ending the call with Logan.

"Grandpa, Logan is behaving strangely."

Grandpa Aristotle did not hide anything from her. "I know, but that’s because he crossed his elder brother," he said calmly, but Agnes was not liking the response.

"Grandpa, he froze my allowances. You are the family head. Please do something."

"So you would be of good behavior? I support," Grandpa responded casually, adding, "Besides, Alex is now the family head."

Grandpa’s words drained Agnes of the very air she breathed. "Grandpa, this isn’t fair."

"I know, but it’s better than death," he pointed out. Agnes stiffened at the end of the line. Indeed, Alex was so ruthless, that he could indeed do worse than that, but she was smart enough to get the clear message.

"Does it mean I would regain everything after putting on good behavior?"

"If the change is genuine, I doubt Alex wouldn’t reconsider." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Deflated, Agnes ended the call and called Alex on the phone. "What is your criteria for good behavior and how do I regain my frozen allowances?"

At the end of the line, Alex was just waking up from bed since he intended to work from home until evening to be there for his wife’s handing-over ceremony.

It wouldn’t be as big as his, but he was determined to give her all the support she deserved.

Being awakened by the call, he was only careful to not wake his wife, speaking in a hushed tone, his leisurely response paling Agnes.

"Well, that depends on how fast you grow, but for the next three months, it won’t be paid."

"What? Why?" Agnes was almost in tears.
