My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 137: Melina’s Task
Chapter 137: Melina’s Task
After Melina invited Keiko to her room to share the chocolates they had received, they kept talking and sharing stories and ended up meeting Melina’s two roommates when they arrived.
Keiko said that she was sharing a room with two noble girls from her country, but they treated her like royalty every time they spoke, so she felt like they weren’t truly her friends.
Melina wasn’t a fan of noble customs either, which was one of the reasons why she felt so connected to Ichiro at first since he would treat everyone equally.
The four girls kept sharing stories until late at night when they were interrupted after Melina saw her voice crystal glowing red and ran inside from the balcony to listen to the message.
Keiko was startled at first but was promptly reassured by Melina’s roommates about how normal it was for her to act like that whenever the crystal glowed, explaining to the girl how the magical artifact worked.
It was Ichiro asking her to check up on Reinar, who was researching a black pearl that would turn people into lesser demons and expressed that it was important.
In a strange way, Melina felt anxiousness and happiness. It was nerve-racking to think that she needed to research a pearl that could turn people into demons, but she was happy that she could do something more interesting than attending the academy classes.
"I gotta go!" she said to her friends, who were still sitting outside on the balcony.
"Where!? It’s late, you know?" Yuki asked with a preoccupied tone.
Melina had kept the whole lesser demon ordeal a secret from her roommates since she believed that it would simply freak them out, so she told them that she had to check something on End Town.
Her friends wanted a better explanation, but Melina quickly teleported out of the room, leaving the three of them with worried expressions.
Melina used most of her MP to appear right in front of the tree house at End Forest, where Reinar and the other alchemists were working.
It was late at night, but the princess could hear the sounds of the alchemists still working inside non-stop, wondering if they ever got any sleep.
As she slowly opened the door and called out to Reinar, a couple of alchemists came down the stairs with haste to greet the princess, saying that Reinar was in the workshop focused on his work and hadn’t come out in days.
When Melina found Reinar at the workshop, she noticed the bag under his eyes that contrasted with his determined face, as if he wasn’t feeling tired at all.
"Oh, hey Melina... Did Ichiro tell you to come?" Reinar asked, only gazing up from his work for a second.
"He said he was worried you would overwork yourself, and it seems like he was right..." Melina replied, crossing her arms.
"I’m fine. I don’t feel tired at all. Until I find a way to reverse this weird curse from the pearl, I can’t rest well..." the alchemist replied, using a lens to focus closer on the pearl.
Melina took a look at the pearl and held it in her hands to inspect it, feeling the demonic energy coursing through it that reminded her of Armaros’ aura.
"Hmmm, strange... I can see these weird shadowy trails coming from it. They kinda look like hair strands..." said Melina as she kept inspecting the black pearl.
Reinar explained that he had tried "pulling" on those shadowy strands in an effort to get them out of the pearl, but he hadn’t found a way to move them.
"I even coated the pearl with holy panacea and injected a little bit of it inside... It still didn’t do anything." Reinar elaborated.
That night, Melina stayed at the workshop helping with the black pearl research and returned to the academy in the morning after teleporting. However, she went straight to the principal’s office instead of her morning classes.
The principal of the Sephyr Academy was a wise old man who had the title of sage and went by the name of Devon.
He was also the father of Sage Johann, the magic teacher that the princess had declined in the past since he would focus solely on teaching her spells to destroy or kill.
"Miss Melina, shouldn’t you be in class?" said the principal as the princess was let inside the office.
Devon had the classical, wise, old sage look, with a long white beard and hair, wearing lengthy, gray robes that trailed behind him as he walked.
"Sir, I needed to ask for permission to skip my lessons for a few days..." Melina replied with confidence.
The princess explained that she wanted to help with the war against Kalusia, saying that Ichiro had been trying his best, and she felt like she could be of use to him if she had more time to research the black pearl.
Devon was aware of the world’s conflicts and was familiar with Ichiro’s name as he was being talked about all over the country. However, he never had the chance to meet him.
Still, he understood the importance of Melina’s task and gave her permission to excuse herself for a week from her lessons and encouraged her to get her desired results so she wouldn’t miss too much.
Melina appreciated Devon’s understanding and quickly went to her room to pick up some spare clothes.
As she scurried down the halls, she passed by Luca, who waved at her and tried starting a conversation but was ignored as Melina made haste to her room.
Visibly annoyed, Luca clenched his fist and asked his friends, Enzo and Marco, to investigate why the princess was acting so rashly, hoping he could find a way to help her deal with her problems.
Enzo, the more level-headed of the three, decided to ask around to look for information while Marco tried to eavesdrop on their room as he was used to doing.
However, he couldn’t hear a single sound coming from the room as Melina had grabbed her stuff and teleported out.
*Ahem* "Excuse me?" said Yuki, who had just arrived at her room and stood behind Marco, looking suspiciously around their door.
Marco nervously turned around, only to see Yuki glaring at him with contempt, and began coming up with an excuse, saying that he was sent to deliver a message to Princess Melina but didn’t receive a response when he knocked.
"Well, she isn’t around. Come back in a few days." Yuki replied as she crossed her arms.
"I-I see. Well then, thanks for letting me know!" Marco said as he quickly made his way out of the hallway and wiped his forehead, letting out a sigh.
’Luca is not going to like this...’ he thought.
