My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 132: The Cursed Beastkins
Chapter 132: The Cursed Beastkins
After successfully capturing the enemy’s camp, the empress transported the beastkins back to the border so we could start their treatment of the curse.
I didn’t know it at first, but the war against Kalusia was an event that we wouldn’t be able to solve for a while.
While we were capturing one of their camps, dozens of other skirmishes were taking place in different parts of the desert. Some were closer to Aridonia, others to the Droman Empire.
In the new camp, the empress explained to me that their strategy was to push the army of Kalusia back to their country, but that would mean that we had to fight them across the desert.
The more pressure we put on them, the more they would have to retreat until eventually returning to their territory, but that also meant that we would be fighting deep in the desert for a long time.
Placing the little wooden figurines in the territory marked as Kalusia on the map atop the table, the empress asked me what would happen after their army was pushed back all the way. She obviously knew the answer but still asked me as if she were testing me.
"I suppose that in a normal war, you keep pushing and conquer the nearby towns..." I said.
Even if we reached the territory of Kalusia after crossing the desert, there were still a few towns and cities standing between the capital and the border.
The empress wondered if they should invade Kalusia, not with the intent of conquering but freeing them from the devil.
I appreciated the way Lysandra was thinking, which was quite rare for an empress to say they wanted to liberate another nation. However, it wouldn’t be that easy even with an army.
Jackson told me that Zagor was much more powerful than Armaros. In fact, he said to me that Armaros was the weakest of the devils that were currently present in the world.
The way Lysandra spoke sometimes made it sound like she wanted to face the devil head-on, which, honestly, was worrying me a little.
"Lysandra, have you ever fought a devil?" I asked.
The empress shook her head, denying ever encountering one.
"The closest I’ve gotten to seeing a devil are these lesser demons..." she replied.
I felt obligated to tell her that devils and lesser demons were on entirely different levels in terms of power and intelligence, telling her about my experience with Armaros.
In reality, I didn’t even know if I could defeat Zagor by myself.
If he was supposed to be much stronger than Armaros, and I needed the help of my companions and Melina’s magic to kill him, then I would need to find a way to fight against Zagor that didn’t require all that support.
The only way I could think of was practicing my "awakening."
Asys, the God of Magic, had given me a quick lesson on how the power of Awakening worked and explained that it could be done with any type of magic.
Depending on the type of magic I used, I would be able to summon different weapons from "Phelena’s Armory."
The time I was fighting Armaros, I "awakened" with night magic, so the weapon I summoned was called the "moonblade," which was quite powerful. Then again, it was thanks to my companions that I could tap into that power.
At nighttime, I left the new camp to return to the one closer to the border where they were keeping the cursed beastkins since I wanted to investigate them more.
When I arrived, Vespera was there with the members of the Dawn’s Defenders, talking with Nisa and Tony, who came up to me as soon as they saw me arrive.
"We have all members here!" said Nisa with a tone as if I were a military commander.
"Nice, let’s plan our next move then..." I said, bringing both ex-bandits with me to one of the tents where they kept the beastkins.
The soldiers were placed in cages that were big enough to hold two or three of them.
Some of them were sleeping, others unconscious, and the ones who were fully awake were terrified of their surroundings.
I spotted a cell that had three beastkins fully awake and trying to stay calm, so I approached them in a friendly manner to talk to them.
"Sorry guys, we’ll keep you here until we find out how to get rid of that curse of yours..." I said, making the three of them widen their eyes with surprise, but none of them replied.
"You probably can’t talk about it because the curse prevents you. Don’t worry, we will still find a way..." I said, keeping the three men intrigued and surprised.
When I first interrogated Nisa and Tony, they couldn’t say a word about the curse, so they had to tell me by showing me their tattoos so that the curse wouldn’t activate.
This time, the beastkins showed no tattoos or marks anywhere on their bodies, making me believe that the curse had somehow been placed inside their bodies.
I explained to the three men that I had used my holy panacea to cure the curses of the bandits from Droman and Aridonia, telling them that if they drank it, then their curse would probably disappear.
However, the three of them looked hesitant about the potion, so I gave it to them so they could inspect it and check its information. Even so, they gave it back to me with terrified expressions.
’Hmmm, that wasn’t the reaction I was expecting...’ I thought.
For some reason, they refused to drink the holy panacea, but they couldn’t tell me why since it was linked to their curse.
"Could it be that if you get cured of the curse, he would know?" I asked the three beastkins, making them nod in affirmation.
"I see..." I muttered as I delved into my thoughts.
The curse they had was different from the one the bandits had in the sense that it was connected to Zagor somehow. So, if one of them were healed of their curse, he would notice immediately.
’If we could heal just one of these beastkins, we could get a lot more information on how to tackle this problem...’ I thought.
