Chapter 34: Fighting to the death for the one you love: Chantal Vs Ana

A violet flash. A brutal explosion.

The air shakes all around them.

It feels like they’re inside an invisible dome that trembles with each blow.

Because that’s exactly what it is.

Ana has created a field of energy that traps everything inside.

No one can escape. No one outside can interfere.

They can’t even see what’s going on.

From the outside, the rocky trail looks silent and empty.

But inside, chaos reigns.

«Wasn’t that enough for you?! Then take this!» Ana shouts.

She’s furious. Her eyes shine with homicidal frenzy.

Flashes of violet light explode all around.

Each one aimed straight at Chantal.

But Chantal’s face twists into something even darker.

«When I’m done with you, the best Hollywood will ever cast you as is a corpse in a war movie!»

She dashes forward. Her flaming sword cuts through Ana’s magic, one spell at a time.

Ana can’t stop her.

She can’t even slow her down.

Chantal is already in front of her—face to face.

The flaming blade strikes Ana fast and hard.

–SBAM!

The hit crashes into a semi-transparent violet energy bubble Ana has raised around herself.

The blade vibrates and bounces back like it hit a wall of steel.

The impact shakes Chantal’s whole body.

She loses balance for a moment.

Ana seizes the chance.

She fires another beam of energy from her palm.

This time, it hits her target dead on and Chantal is thrown far away.

Only her fast reflexes and a focus of the Sacred Flame on the impact point save her from death.

She ends up with just a light surface burn.

«Not bad, I have to admit...» Chantal comments.

She’s already back on her feet. Not even slightly worried. «You’re stronger than that spoiled whore face of yours suggests.»

She smirks with scorn and mockery.

«Spoiled whore...» Ana repeats.

She grits her teeth. Her fists clench in rage.

The energy around her grows more intense—more violent.

So powerful it rips the nearby trees from the rock and shatters them.

«...you know nothing about me! Nothing about what I’ve been through! About the pain that never leaves me—not even for a second!»

«Oooh... what terrible suffering must Ana Garroza have faced...» Chantal mocks. «Did you fall into depression ’cause you couldn’t pick a purse to match your shoes?»

She laughs hard, still taunting her.

Ana’s rage turns to tears—real tears of frustration.

She spreads her massive demonic wings.

The black membrane starts to bubble, like boiling pitch.

«C-Chantal Carreaux...» Ana’s voice shakes with fury and pain. I-I’ll make you suffer more than you ever have in your life! You’ll crawl at my feet, begging me to forgive you! Even if it’s the last thing I do before I die!»

Chantal points her sword with a defiant grin.

«I’m waiting, spoiled whore!»

–BOOM!

Frank, in ogre form, slams his massive fist down on Hakuto.

He dodges with a sharp side leap.

The punch hits the ground.

A violent explosion follows—like a meteor crashing into the earth.

A deep crater opens beneath them.

~How the... how the fuck is he this strong?!~

Hakuto freezes.

That creature did all that with just one punch.

~...anyway, his attacks are slow and predictable!~

Hakuto’s foot hits the ground—he pushes off.

He dashes sideways and strikes at Frank.

The ogre swings an elbow, but it’s slow again.

Predictable. Clumsy.

Hakuto leaps up with feline speed.

He lands on Frank’s shoulders before the ogre can react.

He grabs the hilt with both hands.

The tip points downward.

He brings it down with all his might.

The diamond blade sinks into Frank’s nape.

Dark green blood—darker than his skin—bursts out like a fountain.

But Hakuto doesn’t look victorious.

The blade barely sinks a few centimeters.

It hits Frank’s skull—hard as stone—chipping it just slightly.

Hakuto pulls the sword out right away.

He uses the ogre’s shoulders as a springboard and jumps back to safety.

~Shit... I knew ogre bones were tough—tough enough to make armor—but I didn’t think they were this tough...~

Frank brings his hand to the back of his head, in pain.

His palm is stained with blood.

Even though the wound is shallow, it bleeds far more than it should.

The skin around it is badly burned.

It’s the effect of the Sacred Flame, in direct contact with the body of a demon in its true form.

For a demon, taking human form isn’t just a way to blend in.

It’s a form of self-defense.

A way to neutralize their weakness to that sacred power—a gift given long ago to a few chosen humans by the God of Light, as protection against the demonic creatures of N’Raeth.

Terrifying roars of rage and pain erupt from Frank’s jaws.

Black tentacles burst from Ana’s wings.

They lash toward Chantal, trying to catch her.

And they do.

Chantal tries to dodge, jumping back fast, but slams into the invisible wall of the magical barrier.

The black tendrils wrap around her like an octopus crushing its prey.

They squeeze tight—so tight her bones begin to creak dangerously.

She spits blood.

«Not so funny now, huh?!» Ana shouts.

She bursts into hysterical, satisfied laughter.

«I promised I’d make you suffer more than ever, and I’ll keep that promise until your last breath! You’ll pay for your words—and for stealing my beloved Hakuto from me!»

The tentacles squeeze tighter.

Chantal lets out a long scream of pain, muffled by the blood in her throat.

«Aaaah... now that is music to my ears!» Ana says.

She revels in Chantal’s suffering.

«Get ready... the pain you’ve felt so far is nothing compared to what’s coming!»

Ana’s demonic wings release a faint violet mist.

Lightning of the same color runs through the tentacles like wires.

It reaches Chantal’s body in an instant.

A devastating electric shock surges through her—head to toe.

Her scream is cut off by vomit and blood.

Her eyes are wide with unbearable pain.

Her skin is completely burned.

Veins show underneath like a black web drawn across her body.

Smoke pours out of every orifice, along with blood. freeweɓnovel.cøm

«Chantal! Hang in there, I’m coming!» Hakuto shouts.

Her screams pull his attention instantly.

He gets ready to run to her,

but Frank stomps down in front of him.

Hakuto is forced to pull back.

Now, the ogre stands between him and Chantal.

«I-I can’t... I can’t just stand and watch!» Rika shouts.

She stands up, determined.

Yuzu follows her.

She shifts back into her Hybrid-form,

but doesn’t summon her scythe—she lacks the energy.

Hakuto stretches his arm to the side.

He says nothing, but the gesture speaks clearly.

The girls ignore it.

They move toward Hakuto and take position at his sides.

Rika stands to his right, in Hybrid-form—though she struggles to control it.

Yuzu stands to his left.

«You don’t stand a chance against them! Stay back!» Hakuto warns.

But Rika doesn’t move.

She stands firm, without retreating an inch.

«I can’t just stand by while you risk everything to protect me... And if you can’t beat them, I’ll have to fight anyway! Ana and that ogre are insanely strong... I fear they’re beyond us...»

Her eyes fill with tears, but her gaze is firm.

«...and if this is the end—then I want to die fighting by your side, Hakuto!»

A faint smile forms on Hakuto’s face.

It’s firm, but gentle.

«Rika, Yuzu... let’s show these bastards what happens when you mess with our family!»
