"T-This... this is definitely... the last one..."

Gasping for breath and drenched in sweat, I stood over the brazier and recuperated as best I could, knowing that the next wave was going to be my last one; I had gone through seven of the twelve waves so far, and I planned on eight being my final one.

It was becoming more of a contest of stamina than anything else, and since I had barely a half minute to make use of to recuperate I focused more on just steadying my mind and getting myself right rather then recalling what I had earned already.

Everything I earned was good stuff, but right now I needed to focus on not falling over, so instead I was drinking potions like water and filling my lungs to the brim with oxygen, keeping my blood pumping and soothing the aches in my muscles.

Might not have been the brightest idea I ever had, going into this eighth wave of monsters, but it was also not a terrible idea either since I hadn't gone all out just yet... though I was definitely close to having done so many times already.

I had a few tricks left, some simple yet effective things to do, and if I managed to get them all done in the right way I could clear this wave easily!

Surely everything would go down in the right manner and allow me to make use of the tricks that I know, right?

Right?

It's never too late to hope about those sorts of things, but when the break was over and the new wave began I found myself staring face to face with an ethereal Wyvern that looked incredibly pissed it had been summoned to face me.

Completely transparent and overflowing with mana, the monster took a step forwards and let out a puff of gaseous Fire Mana that sparked as it floated closer to me, only for it to explode when I leapt backwards.

Propelling me even further, the cloud singed my arms and hair while also letting me know that this wasn't going to be anywhere near an easy fight, nor a fight that I had any prior experience in whatsoever. freewёbnoνel.com

Snorting in what seemed like amusement, the monster stared at me from afar and just waited, watching me closely and following my every move as I got back to my feet and steadied myself, trying to determine my best course of action.

If it was ethereal and made from mana, then my weapons would be rather useless, even when coated in mana; they would just hinder my movements completely, and I think having my hands free would be more valuable than having two potential catalysts...

So I sheathed them and stared at the Wyvern, breathing in some more mana and raking my eyes over its transparent form; it was made from white wisps of mana that glowed beneath the sunlight, and whenever it twitched or shuffled around all of those wisps made it look like a mirage.

When it had breathed that cloud of Fire Mana at me it's head had shifted to a reddish color, and right now its large wings were becoming green-

Leaping into the air, I avoided the gale that blew over the desert, whipping up the sand and threatening deep lacerations if I had been slower to react; even still, the Wyvern flapped its wings once more and stood on its legs, snarling at me as I tried to avoid this too.

In the same moment that it swung those now green wings at me its head turned red once more, and soon another cloud was floating towards me, sparking far more frequently than the first one, trapping me between two separate attacks from two separate elements.

Summoning my own Wind Mana to my hands I shot myself back down towards the ground by releasing it in a strong burst, falling back onto the sand and putting my boots on the ground as that cloud began to lower, tracking my every move.

Quickly shaping the remaining mana in my hands into a cloud of my own, I sent it on a collision course with the other cloud and turned my attention back to the Wyvern, who was raising its wings and drawing out a large amount of Wind Mana for another attack.

I ignored the explosion above me, instead focusing on what I could try and do to kill this monster made from mana; I could try and kill it like normal, using spells and the like to wound it and 'bleed' it dry, but... I don't know how viable that is.

I had a feeling though that this mana based monster would be weaker to something a very minuscule amount of people would have going into these Trials, which was Lust Mana; infecting other people via their mana was its modus operandi, and this Wyvern was only mana... it didn't take a genius to see what would happen there.

The problem was getting close enough to attack it with the Lust Mana I had, and also figuring out how to kill it after I infected it with either a strong desire to do something or the lack thereof; if it still had a survival instinct then it would snap out of my paltry attempts to tamper with its desires, so... I still needed to do something else...

That was step one though, and I suppose I could determine step two when I got to that point; for now, as I stared at the giant tornado gathering between its wings, I knew that I had far more pressing matters at hand right now, and determining a way to kill this thing wasn't it.

I do suppose that I should consider myself lucky for having Wind Mana of my own in this encounter, because otherwise I would likely be dealing with some very serious injuries; that tornado was spinning at immensely fast speeds, and it was sending grains of sand around far quicker than I could avoid.

Being lacerated by a thousand or so grains of sand sounded like hell, especially if I couldn't out heal the damage being dealt to me... that would be a terrible way to go, so instead I focused on running, not caring about the brazier's radius for now as I just decided to survive.
