Chapter 296 -293: Luring Monsters is a Technical Activity
The Demon Tide doesn’t just appear without reason.
More than two months into the apocalypse, humanity had already summarized the reasons for the emergence of the Demon Tide.
Abyssal Rifts scattered across the world spewed out countless Demonized Beasts every day; those beasts, like a virus, spread outwards chaotically.
The areas near the Abyssal Rifts had a higher density of Demonized Beasts, but in other regions, as the beasts roamed, their density would similarly continue to increase.
Once their numbers rose to a certain threshold, and if there were Sanctuaries with large human populations nearby, the scents would attract swarms of Demonized Beasts.
And that would form the Demon Tide.
This is why Awakeners needed to hunt Demonized Beasts from time to time, to reduce the density around the Sanctuaries, greatly decreasing the likelihood of a Demon Tide outbreak.
The occurrence of a single Demon Tide might be an accident, but several occurring in nearby areas signaled something amiss.
“Hmm, of course, besides the common reason of beast density, there are many other causes for the Demon Tide, like that giant tree in the mining area.”
Tang Yu thought to himself and then asked, “Do you know the specific locations of the Demon Tide?”
“The approximate locations are these, but given the Demon Tide’s speed of movement, the margin of error could be quite significant,” his deputy said gravely, taking out the map previously used for planning the railway and marking several regions with red circles.
Tang Yu stared at it for a while without saying a word.
Several of the places were far from Green Shadow, seemingly unrelated to the giant tree with its gleaming white branches and leaves.
…
With such an incident unfolding, the martial arts competition had suddenly lost its luster.
The deputy and several military warriors had already left, but Tang Yu remained seated in the spectator stands, his gaze seemingly scattered in contemplation; in reality, he had already sent Kong through a contract to investigate.
The army had detected the abnormalities around his Territory first, making Tang Yu realize his current shortcomings.
Indeed, the Territory itself was managed like an iron barrel, but outside of it, his reach was too limited.
At this moment, Tang Yu snapped out of his reverie and glanced at one side of the spectator stands, where a middle-aged man with a shadowy complexion, wearing at least D-grade Rune Armor, was hastily leaving with several of his men.
Tang Yu’s gaze lingered on the middle-aged man for a few seconds.
The Director of the Lingshan Sanctuary, self-styled as the Lingshan City Lord.
He had dispatched people multiple times to spy on the Sanctuary’s intelligence, including those who had infiltrated the castle previously; of those who were still alive, three came from Lingshan.
It could be said they had been frantically probing the edge of death.
Various pieces of intelligence about the Lingshan Sanctuary flashed through his mind.
Tang Yu didn’t care much about these spies… one couldn’t expect to always be bothered by flies, but if there was a chance to clap them dead, he was more than willing.
However, there were points that did concern him.
Lingshan… City Lord, a mere Sanctuary Director of a twenty-thousand-person population dared to claim the title of City Lord. He, the distinguished Lord Tang, hadn’t even cared to use the title of Lord!
“The commercial district is completed, and the Sanctuary’s scale has risen a notch. Maybe in some time, I should also build a city, to elevate my own status?”
As he pondered.
The audience erupted in waves of cheers.
Tang Yu glanced at the screen, where the final battle had already entered its endgame. Only a few survivors remained, all of whom were high-level big shots above the Sixth Layer.
It had just been a fierce showdown between two such titans, a perilously close contest. In the end, Fiery Fire Team’s captain, Wang Wu, slew his opponent at the cost of grave injuries. However, before he could savor the victory, he was killed by a Demonized Beast drawn by the commotion.
At this stage, in the latter part of the finals, the strength of the Demonized Beasts kept increasing. On the forest edge, thousands of Demonized Beasts emerged, forming a Demon Tide, squeezing the operational space of the competing Awakeners.
The final stage was the most exciting. Shay’s commentary was rapid-fire, popping off non-stop, struggling to keep pace with the progress of the match.
The audience cheered fervently for their favorites…
Tang Yu also noticed some utterly despondent spectators standing out starkly amidst the crowd—probably because they had suffered a heavy loss.
As the final battle was drawing to a close, the deputy who had just left returned.
Tang Yu noticed the man’s clothes were disheveled and stained with blood; his expression was even more stern than before.
…
…
Underground Research Institute.
Dr. Zheng stopped his work at hand.
A bald man stood before him, head bowed, demeanor respectful. Upon closer inspection, the thick brown fur covering the bald man’s burly arms were unlike any human’s, more akin to the fur of a wild beast.
Unlike Transformation series ability users, it was the bald man’s normal state to look like this.
After listening to his subordinate’s report, Dr. Zheng’s expression shifted dramatically, “How many times must I emphasize caution? And now you’re telling me you’ve botched it?!”
The large-framed bald man stepped back half a pace involuntarily and waited until Dr. Zheng’s ire had somewhat subsided before he tentatively responded, “Doctor, it’s not yet a mess, just a bit… unexpected.”
“We can’t control the Demonized Beasts and can only resort to conventional luring techniques. This time, our target is the Lingshan Sanctuary. I thought to lure more over, since otherwise, Lingshan Sanctuary would be tough to tackle. But luring too many all at once was a… bit of a mistake.”
The bald man felt wronged, “We really didn’t anticipate Awakeners undertaking such frequent activities in the wilderness these days. But luckily, the biggest part of the Demon Tide is not far from Lingshan now.”
It was hard to maintain control when luring such an abundance of aggro, and this was complicated further in recent times as a surge of Awakeners moved into Green Shadow, and there was increased traffic between the Sanctuaries. The Demon Tide he had so painstakingly gathered was dispersed.
It was an utterly helpless situation for him.
“Doctor, are we still going after Lingshan Sanctuary?”
Dr. Zheng paced the room, “How many of the surrounding small Sanctuaries are left?”
The bald man pondered, somewhat unsure, “Maybe five? Six? Or eight? We’ve found several Sanctuaries over the past few days, with the survivors and supplies having moved out already.”
Dr. Zheng stayed silent.
He was hesitant.
Worried about alerting Lindong’s attentions.
Without Lin Wei as a partner, even though he now had a number of Beastification Soldiers under his command, his channels for understanding the outside world were nearly nonexistent. He only recently learned of the small Sanctuary assimilation strategy through a few captured Awakeners a few days prior.
This gave him a sense of urgency.
The research into Beastification Soldiers required a vast amount of raw material. Dr. Zheng could not bear to think of a scenario where, upon reaching a critical phase of the research, he would have to halt due to a lack of experimental subjects… it would drive him mad!
After a moment of silence, Dr. Zheng gave an order, “Lingshan Sanctuary must be taken! Over twenty thousand survivors, especially those one or two thousand Awakeners—their material will suffice for two months.”
“We need to act quickly. If Lingshan Sanctuary also relocates, that would be troublesome.”
