Chapter 216: Double Trouble

Aceco promised to show up at the camp the next day to commence the creation of the new veil, and with that, Rhett’s mission was done.

He drove back to the precinct with a somber heart. The fairy healer had provided lots of new Insight on finding the vampire. And she also reminded him again of his greatest weakness.

"That ancient vampire is powerful, but he can be killed by one thing. Fire. If you ever do catch him and wish you eradicate him permanently... LIGHT HIM UP." Those were Aceco’s words before he left.

Rhett had a lot troubling his mind as he drove past the thick trees of the woods under the cover of night. Did anyone see him? Was Aceco still safe where she was? And how does he handle Darius and the situation of him being a potential traitor?

They’d visited her once and now it seemed to him like they were overdoing it. If or when they do go to war against the vampire, she might prove useful, even if she can’t actively fight. They couldn’t let any harm befall her before then.

"Ugh. Moon goddess, help us." He rubbed his temples, cursing silently.

The next day was orientation day and Rhett was prepared at the precinct, where he waited patiently for the enlisters/volunteers.

When they started appearing in their numbers, it didn’t take long for a wolf— the stupid Beta’s nephew Drach—to start a fight with a fey. But the fight was broken off by his arrival. Soon, Beta Darius also decided to ’grace them’ with his presence.

It seemed stupidity ran in the family.

When Rhett saw his son and Cullen being given punishments, he couldn’t help squinting. He spied on them from the corner of his eyes and was easily able to study their interactions. It was clear as day that the two were close. But he couldn’t comprehend the boundaries of that ’closeness’ yet.

Once the group finally got to the camp and his son and Cullen completed their punishments, Rhett decided to warn the latter to see his reaction.

"As for you, don’t forget what we discussed last time. Remember, I have my eyes on you. You’ll have to be more responsible if you’re going to be around my son and his... and Isleen." He uttered to Cullen, his eyes focused on his expression.

The lad seemed rather... Amused? He didn’t seem even slightly stressed or bothered about being basically threatened by him.

Something was definitely off about him...

In the camp, Rhett and Darius resided in a wooden building, where they could easily watch over the trainees.

The lazy Beta was currently asleep, so he went to the top floor, to make a call with Farkas.

"I’m telling you, Farkas, Darius is a traitor. I just need to gather enough evidence on him." Rhett spoke confidently into the phone as he took a glance at the activities down below. It was already evening and the sun had begun setting in the horizon, the tall trees surrounding the camp already providing shade away from the receding sunlight.

Farkas spoke calmly from the other end. "Maybe, but he’s not our vampire now, is he? Come on, Gamma Rhett! Our main priority now should be finding that bloodsucking bastard and making him pay."

The birds chirped and flew past him, heading for their nests. He drummed his fingers on the wooden rail of the balcony, a frustrated groan escaping his lips.

"Perhaps," Rhett muttered, his eyes scanning through the camp to see if his son had come out of his tent. There was still no sign of him. "Anyway, Aceco advised me not to take the Cullen guy out of my suspect list... Yet. But I don’t know how to get him to confess to being the vampire if he really is him. I’ll just have to play it cool and keep my eyes on him until he does anything suspicious."

He gripped the rail, squeezing tighter when he thought about the whole thing. Whether it was by a shape-shifting vampire or by a traitor, the Raven Wood pack was fucked at all sides.

"Keeping your eyes on both Darius and the suspected vampire?" Farkas repeated, sighing at the other end. "May the moon give you strength."

Rhett smiled wryly to himself, running a hand through his hair. His peace was a price he had to pay for being the Gamma.

After a few more minutes of talking, he hung up and turned to head back into the building when he heard a bone-chilling screech. The screech caused him to pause, as he swerved his head back quickly towards the camp.

"Vampires!" He heard a wolf scream and soon, the whole camp erupted into chaos.

Wolves and fey alike were chased out of their tents by the vampires, who came out of the shadows in their tens.

Vampires? Here so soon? There was no denying it, there was something off about it. Someone had betrayed them!

"Darius!" Rhett roared as he got back into the building, heading for the Beta’s room. Once he got there, he knocked like crazy, his brows joining together in a frown. "Beta Darius, wake up! We are under attack."

He withheld the urge to just kick the door open, as he waited patiently. Knowing the Beta, he might accuse him of assault if he did.

"By the moon, Rhett! Do you want to break down my door?" The annoying Beta bellowed from inside with a sleepy voice as the door made a click sound.

Soon, he stepped out, his eyes a bit swollen with sleep, and looking on at Rhett like he’d gone mad. All he needed was a pair of pajamas to look like a complete sissy in Rhett’s eyes.

"The camp is under attack by vampires, Beta Darius! This is no time for sleeping." He hollered hastily, as he left the Beta to his office. Once he got there, he found a mic placed on it that was connected to a large megaphone outside. He turned on the alarm, which resounded around the entire camp, and then announced into the microphone something he didn’t think he’d say for a while in the camp. "This is not a drill! We are under attack by vampires. Everyone’s focus should be on defense and survival until help arrives. Again, this is NOT a drill!"

He repeated the warning several times, during which, the Beta walked into the office.

"Where’s Aceco? I thought you said she’d be coming here today?" Darius snapped, as he glared at Rhett.

However, the latter didn’t give him any face, as he got up and walked past him. He picked up his gun, reloading it with bullets. Silver bullets.

He also held a sword which had its blade coated in silver and made for the exit. The Beta’s rantings followed behind him but soon became distant as he stepped foot outside. He closed his eyes, drawing in a deep breath. He needed to concentrate. He needed to clear his head.

Suddenly, a screech came from his left side, causing him to jolt his eyes open.
