Chapter 77 -76: Qiaozi who was betrayed but still helping people count money
The following day.
The Black Forest was not named for its darkness. Quite the contrary, the name derived from a time unknown to Mu Lin, when her Master had named it thus. Despite what the name would suggest, the forest was well known, yet to this day, Mu Lin was not privy as to when her Master had coined such a notorious name for it.
She had yet to realize that perhaps she was in part responsible for it.
A high-pitched eagle cry echoed through the air and halted Mu Lin before she could step into the Black Forest. The resonant cry filled her ears, deepening the curve of her lips even further.
She lifted her gaze towards the sky.
Qiaozi dove from high above. As he neared Mu Lin, he swirled around in an abrupt avoidance and landed softly on her shoulder, rubbing affectionately against her face.
Qiaozi hadn’t expected to see her so soon. Thinking it would take a long time before she returned, he had kept vigil in the area, awaiting her return in sheer longing. Her return in merely a month’s time was a much-needed bolster for his spirit.
Mu Lin gently patted Qiaozi’s head and whispered, “Qiaozi, I’m back.”.
Qiaozi responded with a soft, cooing cry, leaning into her touch.
Upon her return to the Black Forest, just as she had done countless times before, Mu Lin’s first endeavor was to visit her Master’s grave. There, she would recount her journey, her encounters, providing a detailed report to her late Master, Mu Jue. Only then would she return to her own cabin.
Despite her month-long absence, little seemed changes in the cabin. Dust was a rare sight – perhaps because it was located deep in the forest where the air was always a bit damp.

“Have you been a good guardian all this time?” Mu Lin asked as she entered the cabin.
Qiaozi replied with a low chirp, flapping his wings against his chest, a look of conceit painted across his face. Mu Lin didn’t need words to comprehend his current status, a small curve of her lips displaying her own understanding.
Once inside, Mu Lin sorted out the items she needed and placed them on the table. She then turned to approach Qiaozi’s nest.
On witnessing Mu Lin’s actions, Qiaozi let out a low whimper. His initially high spirits now seemed to have evaporated.
Seeing Qiaozi appear so downcast, Mu Lin chuckled softly, however, she didn’t speak. Instead, she ventured over to Qiaozi’s nest and took out a few Night Pearls, glancing at him. “I promised some friends outside that I would gift them some Night Pearls. Would you be willing to part with these?”
Her offer last time wasn’t just empty words. Since she had to leave again after returning here, she needed to bring these along.
Unfortunately, Qiaozi was vehemently shaking his head, a drumroll of emphatic negation.
Hardly back long enough to settle, she was already planning to leave again, and now her plan to rob him of his treasures was out; no way! Absolutely not! Qiaozi was furiously flapping his wings to protest.
“What if…this time I take you with me?” Mu Lin asked, a tempting smirk playing on her lips. Now, she curious; would he choose the pearls, or could he be persuaded to accompany her?
Upon hearing Mu Lin’s words, Qiaozi dropped his head in contemplation, and upon realizing what Mu Lin proposed, he found himself restrained by indecision.
Mu Lin, the pearls! The pearls, Mu Lin!
“It seems, I’m less important to you than your treasures.” Mu Lin’s voice was tinged with a touch of regret and dismay. At that, Qiaozi panicked. Without any hesitation, he flew back to his nest, dug out all the Night Pearls he had been hoarding there and pushed them all towards Mu Lin. He was utterly oblivious to the mischievous smile secretly pulling at the corner of her mouth, and the bright, gleaming hope in her eyes.
Her eyes betrayed not a hint of resentment.
Tsk… tsk… tsk… poor Qiaozi. Compared to Mu Lin, he was the type of eagle who’d unknowingly let himself be sold by her, and then also willingly help her count the money, all while excitedly promoting the sale itself.
“Considering your eagerness, I cannot refuse,” Mu Lin stated matter of fact, taking several Night Pearls from the pile and placing them in her bag, and then patting Qiaozi’s head as a gesture of reward.
With his tilted head, Qiaozi patiently waited.
Seeing that Mu Lin made no further promises, he became restless and started circling anxiously in his nest.
What happened to the promise of taking him along? Why wasn’t she saying anything about it?
Finally, seeing his nearly explosive anxiety, Mu Lin spoke up. “Don’t worry. This time I will be gone for a bit longer. Given your good behavior, I won’t leave you alone this time to pine for me here.” Besides packing up some necessary items for her trip, Qiaozi was one of the ‘things’ she was planning to take away.
On hearing Mu Lin’s words, Qiaozi energetically fluttered around Mu Lin’s head before disappearing from sight in an instant. He must have gone to vent his excited and elated spirit, and also to say his goodbyes to his old forest friends.
The chance to venture out into the world for the first time had left Qiaozi ecstatic beyond measure.
In contrast to Qiaozi’s excitement, once he flew off, Mu Lin returned to her room. For a long time, she sat in deep thought, pondering over matters she had never contemplated before and the complicated relationship between her and Mu Jue. As memories of a rain-soaked day resurfaced, the rain crimson, she slowly closed her eyes, the faint traces of past tears visible at the corners…
Master.
