Limitless The Strongest Revenant-Chapter 992: There it is [1/2]

Even though they came from the same continent and had the same legacy, they chose differently. One decided to save the world by doing what was right. And the other wanted to do so by what was wrong.

The terms Paragon and Renegade gave one a prediction of how the two would act. But what would be classified as right or wrong in this setting? Was it truly that simple? The Sin of Gluttony served as the one to make the successor choose. But what exactly?

'I think I misunderstood something.'

As I never really claimed the legacies yet, what IRIS and I had to go on were, at best, guesses. We didn't know why my brothers did what they did after claiming each one.

The Legacy of Pride caused them to become confused. They all ceased trying to clear Hellsgate, but no one knew why.

The Legacy of Greed gave them a goal to search for something called the "Keys." What they were for, where they were, and what they looked like, no one knew.

The Legacy of Wrath then made them forget the keys. They began a hunt for the Apostates. Again, with little to no information, hardly anything was found.

The Legacy of Envy turned the Successors paranoid. They suddenly began to fear betrayal. And like madmen, they brutally murdered those whom they thought "betrayed" them. Even innocent ones. They all also went to research World Serpents.

The Legacy of Sloth would allow them to put their fears to rest, restoring their sanity. But it also made them depressed and antisocial. The worst part was that they lost all sense of drive, purpose, and urgency.

The Legacy of Lust restored their ability to feel emotion and got them out of their rut. Yet the object of their affection still killed themselves for reasons no one knew.

Finally, the Sins of Gluttony gave the Successors a choice: kill the reapers or slay the Sin. It was only after that the Successors would be considered complete. After they reclaimed all seven of their legacies.

It ended in only one of two ways. They either turned homicidal and wanted to end the Reapers, or they stayed righteous and fought the Serpent.

Aki wanted me to kill the Revenants. That was her wish. A desire borne of loss, despair, and resignation. But how did it contribute to destroying the world? Aki never said she wanted to end the world. The meaning was implied. All she wanted was to kill the Revenants.

I then tried to remember the words of Zanele.

"I know that it is quite depressing to hear. But we are near the end. It could be said that the first six Sins are but the opening act. Successor, I can finally explain to you how the Sins of Gluttony differ from the others. They wish to kill the Reapers to end the world."

'To kill the Reapers to end the world.'

Taken literally, it was correct. As the Reapers were the final defense of humanity, killing them would spell the end.

If you thought about it, the bouts made sense. There were seven Successors to be expected. Each had to claim their legacies before the bouts. At least that was my understanding.

Even if there are Renegades among the Successors, they had a high chance to die in the bouts. But what if they didn't die? What if the last one standing was a Renegade? Wouldn't we be fucked then?

Even Bashir and Zuri, two of the African Successors Zanele supported, ended up choosing differently. It didn't make any sense.

Someone who would take the time to craft this entire thing wouldn't leave such an obvious loophole. Otherwise, they would have just gotten people who had questionable morals from the beginning. Why go through all this nonsense?

As I learned from the media IRIS and Trinity created, I learned a lot. One of those was that heroes were not just white. They were gray. That was the entire thing the legacies wanted to teach. Even in fiction, there were heroes and anti-heroes.

Idealism, while admirable, does not always get the job done. In reality, white knights were not the norm; they were the minority. Anyone in positions of power would have to pick the lesser of two evils. This dynamic was what made being a Reaper so difficult.

'So how can they expect the Successors to be any different?'

How can IRIS honestly say that the Sins of Gluttony were evil when they were part of the legacies? From how Zanele explained, that was how it sounded. But in reality, that wasn't the case.

"Looks like you understood to a degree. Anyway, my time is short. In a nutshell, what I want you to be careful of are the Revenants and IRIS. They are not allies of the reapers, nor of humanity."

Those were the words Robert Acwellan, the Slayer said to me before. After I killed him, he took the time to warn me. At the time, I thought it was bullshit, but something from IRIS's story didn't quite add up.

I turned to Aki and had all the Sirens hear my words.

'Kamisan, please answer me truthfully; it is important. Did you ever want the world to end?'

The girls all looked at me with confusion. Obviously perturbed by my question. Aki shook her head before answering me with her link.

'No, Anata. I did not care about the world. I just wanted to kill the seven Revenants because they had the power to save everyone but chose not to.'

'I see.'

Bella touched my arm and looked into my eyes. Worry and unease were evident on her face.

'Honey. Is something wrong?'

I smiled and said, "No. Everything is fine," with my mouth.

But in my link, I said the opposite.

'Exa, take over for me.'

[Understood. Dual Pilot initiated.]

My body then began to move and talk with Zanele, Nandi, and Zinhle.

'My Kindred, from this point on please consider IRIS to be our enemy. Treat them the same as you would Trinity.'

'Possum, what do you mean? Nelle is helping us!'

'Zanele is fine, Kitten. I can feel that she is sincere. But the last comment she made about the Successors did not make sense. From how she worded it, Renegades have to be terminated.'

Like spies in movies, I chatted with my mouth. But I spoke in code and symbols with my girls inwardly. It was normally done when you weren't sure if it was safe to speak. Despite the soul cage around us, I didn't feel okay voicing my concerns.

'Darling, you are referring to how they presented the story, right? From their words, the Successors HAVE to be Paragons. The only thing she hasn't said is that Renegades should be killed for the dangers they caused.'

'Yes. That is exactly the problem. Even the Sin and Successor system tolerated the Renegades. How can IRIS, who has studied them all this time, just exclude half the Successors?' I explained.

'Dearest, are you saying that IRIS is intentionally trying to kill all the Renegades? But what reason would they have to do so? Trinity is the enemy! They have been all this time. They are trying to give the world to the undead!'

'Oi, pervert, ever heard the saying 'History is written by the victors'? Came from one of your Prez's, the fat wanker. I'm not even a Seppo and I know that!'
