Chapter 48 - Canoeing

The soft sound of lapping waves echoed through the forested lake as Kazuma and Masako sat in a bright red canoe, paddling leisurely under the afternoon sun. Masako's golden eyes sparkled with excitement as she dipped her oar into the water, her movements elegant and deliberate. She wore a light blue summer dress that complemented her golden eyes and dark brown hair, which she had tied up to keep it out of her face. Kazuma, in contrast, looked slightly out of his element, his light blue eyes focused intently on steering.

"See, dear?" Masako said with a grin, glancing back at him. "I told you this would be fun. You're getting the hang of it!"

Kazuma gave her a skeptical look. "I feel like I'm one wrong paddle away from tipping us over," he muttered.

Masako laughed, her voice light and teasing. "You worry too much. Just relax and enjoy it! Canoeing is supposed to be calming."

Kazuma sighed but couldn't help smiling at her enthusiasm. Despite his apprehension, the serene beauty of the lake was starting to win him over. The water was clear and calm, reflecting the surrounding trees and blue sky like a mirror. Birds chirped in the distance, and the occasional splash of a fish breaking the surface added to the tranquil atmosphere.

"You're right," he admitted after a moment. "This is nice."

Masako beamed, her golden eyes crinkling with joy. "I told you so, dear. Now just keep paddling, and maybe we'll find a good spot to rest and take in the view."

For a while, everything went smoothly. The couple paddled in sync, laughing and chatting as they explored the lake. But as they turned toward a small inlet, Kazuma miscalculated the angle of his paddle. The canoe wobbled precariously, and before he could regain his balance, the unthinkable happened—he leaned too far to one side and toppled straight into the water.

The splash was enormous, sending ripples across the once-calm surface. Masako froze for a moment, her golden eyes wide, before bursting into laughter. She clutched her sides, struggling to steady the canoe as she giggled uncontrollably.

"Kazuma!" she managed to say between laughs. "What happened? You looked so serious a second ago!"

Kazuma surfaced, sputtering and wiping water from his face. His light blue hair was plastered to his forehead, and his expression was equal parts embarrassed and annoyed. "Glad you're enjoying yourself," he said dryly, glaring up at her.

Masako couldn't stop laughing, her voice echoing across the lake. "I'm sorry, dear, but you should've seen your face! That was priceless!"

Kazuma narrowed his eyes, a mischievous glint replacing his initial frustration. "Oh, you think this is funny, huh?"

Before Masako could react, Kazuma reached up, grabbed the edge of the canoe, and gave it a firm tug. The sudden movement caught her off guard, and with a startled yelp, she toppled into the water beside him.

Masako surfaced with a gasp, her golden eyes wide as she pushed her wet hair out of her face. "Kazuma!" she exclaimed, splashing water at him. "That was uncalled for!"

Kazuma smirked, treading water effortlessly. "Consider it payback," he said, splashing her back. "Now we're even."

Masako glared at him for a moment before her lips curled into a grin. "Fine," she said, her tone playful. "But don't think I'm going to let you off the hook that easily."

The two splashed and laughed, their earlier frustration forgotten as they enjoyed the impromptu swim. By the time they climbed back into the canoe and paddled toward the shore, they were both drenched but grinning from ear to ear.

As they reached the shore, Masako stepped out of the canoe first, her soaked dress clinging to her body as she waded through the shallow water. The fabric had turned translucent from the soaking, revealing more of her figure than she had intended. Her golden eyes widened slightly as she glanced down, realizing the state of her outfit.

Kazuma stepped out of the canoe behind her, his own clothes drenched but not nearly as revealing. When he looked up and saw her, his light blue eyes immediately darted away, his face flushing red. "Uh, Masako... your dress..." he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.

Masako looked at him, her cheeks turning pink as she noticed his reaction. "Oh, dear," she said, her voice tinged with embarrassment but also amusement. "I didn't think about that."

Kazuma cleared his throat, doing his best to keep his gaze respectful. "We should, uh, probably head back to the cabin so you can change."

Masako nodded, a playful grin slowly replacing her embarrassment. "Lead the way, dear," she said, wrapping her arms around his as they began walking up the path. "But don't think I didn't notice you sneaking a peek."

Kazuma groaned, his face burning even brighter. "I wasn't sneaking a peek!"

"Sure you weren't," Masako teased, her golden eyes glinting mischievously. "You're just lucky I'm not mad about it."

As they walked back, their laughter filled the air, blending with the sounds of the lake and forest. Despite the mishap, the day had been a success, full of love, fun, and memories they would cherish forever.
