Legendary FBI Detective-Chapter 259: Vireness Investigates and Mona Upgrades
Investigation Team Five, outside the interrogation room.
Hearing Augustus's words, Luo An and Mona stepped out of the interrogation room and found Special Agent Director Vireness standing in the corridor.
Taking Luo An into the surveillance room next to the monitoring room, Vireness sat down in a chair and asked with a serious tone,
"Luo An, what exactly is going on with this case?"
Augustus had just sent her a message saying that Team Five discovered a major incident, but he had not elaborated.
"Director, have you heard of the 'Federation Youth Hobbies Association'?"
Luo An started by asking Vireness a question, then began to describe the investigation process of the case.
While describing, Luo An was quietly observing the expression on Vireness's face; she did not seem surprised at the name of the association, nor was there any significant change in her expression.
Seeing this, Luo An raised his eyebrows – of course, how could the FBI not have been aware of such an organization.
It's just unclear why there had been no action taken.
After listening to Luo An's narrative, Vireness pondered for a moment, her brow slightly furrowed as she said,
"Luo An, this organization has actually been under our FBI's surveillance all along."
Vireness had more plentiful intelligence regarding the 'Federation Youth Hobbies Association.'
In her introduction, the main strongholds of the 'Federation Youth Hobbies Association' were San Francisco and New York, and they had even repeatedly called on Congress to enact or amend legislation so that children could have "the right to sex without harassment and exploitation," "to abolish age of consent laws, especially those that prohibit adult men from freely engaging in sexual activities with minors," and "we demand the release of men and minors who are imprisoned because of these laws."
Their slogans were loud and clear, but in practice, they were using the "protection of minors' sexual autonomy" as a pretext for committing acts of sexual abuse against boys.
In 1995, due to strong public criticism and law enforcement raids, the 'Federation Youth Hobbies Association' fell apart, and the main responsible persons of the organization were thrown into prison, leaving only a few rarely-used contact mailboxes in San Francisco.
Child crimes are, after all, one of the federal felonies, so the FBI has never ceased to monitor the remaining members of the organization.
Upon hearing this, Luo An's eyebrows raised:
"But the organization has resurfaced in New York, and the scale of its operations is growing."
"That's right."
Vireness nodded her head, saying gravely,
"Which means that someone is providing them with protection."
Luo An kept his expression unchanged, which was already an obvious fact.

However, as the FBI had been inactive all this time, he now began to suspect whether some people at the upper echelons of the FBI were also involved.
"The investigation into this case must be kept secret moving forward. Do not let too many people know."
After thinking quietly for a while, Vireness stood up, her expression grave as she looked at Luo An and said seriously,
"The methods, behavior, and legal procedures used in the course of the investigation must all be lawful, try not to leave any excuses for the other party to criticize.
I will also look into this case when I return, and please communicate any updates in a timely manner."
The implications in Vireness's words were clear – she would investigate the higher-level aspects, while Team Five would be responsible for the specific details.
"Yes, Director."
Luo An nodded, agreeing to take on the task. When Vireness left the surveillance room, he even held the door open for her and whispered,
"Be careful, Director."
"Sure."
With a slight smile, Vireness responded quietly.
Although she didn't believe that investigating this case would pose any danger to her, Luo An's words of concern were still greatly appreciated.
Casually raising Vireness's approval, Luo An watched her enter the elevator and chuckled as he turned back to the office area of Team Five.
Mona was sitting at the desk of the office area and asked:
"Luo An, what did Chief Vireness say?"
Augustus stepped out of the team leader's office as well.
"Continue the investigation!"
Luo An gestured broadly, indicating that a case involving children had no reason to be dropped, and that the continuation of the investigation was unquestionable.
The only thing was, the case might involve some high-level figures, so the investigation process needed to be somewhat covert.
"Good!"
"Fantastic!"
Upon hearing this, all the agents of the Unit Five heaved a sigh of relief.
After all, there were cases within the FBI in which the higher-ups chose to suppress and not allow investigations.
Such cases were not uncommon.
Augustus's expression remained unchanged; Vireness's decision and order were no surprise to him, given that he had an uncle at the Washington Headquarters, so there were very few instances where Vireness would yield and back down.
Mona looked at Luo An with a smile, just about to return to her seat to start working, when Augustus suddenly said:
"Luo An, Reesi, Mona, come to my office."
"OK."
Inside the office, the four of them sat down, and Augustus handed three folders to them.
Upon opening the folders, they did not find a notice about the bonus distribution after having solved the "Dr. Flavia Fran AIDS Murder Case," since the case had just ended today and the report hadn't been completed yet.
What was actually in the folders was the notice that Luo An, Mona, and Reesi were to be transferred to work in Los Angeles next month.
The notice contained their job positions, Luo An was unsurprisingly still a Senior Special Agent and Deputy Team Leader, and Reesi was also still a Senior Special Agent.
Contrary to Mona's expectations, the notice indicated that upon her transfer and arrival in Los Angeles, she would be promoted from a regular Special Agent to a Senior Special Agent.
Mona looked up in surprise, while Luo An and Reesi both smiled and applauded for her:
"Congratulations, Mona!"
"Congrats! Congrats!"
From the perspective of other trainee agents who joined the FBI New York Branch at the same time as Mona, her promotion from a regular Special Agent to a Senior Special Agent was incredibly rapid.
Among them, a small number remained as trainee agents, and while most had become regular Special Agents, the promotion to a Senior Special Agent seemed far off in the future.
However, compared to Luo An, Mona's promotion was significantly slower.
Moreover, Mona's contributions during the investigations were clear for all to see in the numerous cases.
For this reason, Luo An had always felt that Mona's promotion was too slow, which is why after briefly discussing Lede's situation with Vireness, he also mentioned Mona's rank issue.
"Thank you, Chief."
Mona thanked him repeatedly with a smile, as she, like Luo An, didn't really care about the agent rank.
But the pay raise that came with becoming a Senior Special Agent made her particularly happy.
As a federal female with an independent personality and years of single living experience, Mona had no intention of depending on others for money, and when facing financial difficulties, she subconsciously chose to tighten her belt and cope alone rather than seek help from others.
Even if that person was Luo An, with whom Mona had moved in.
In the team leader's office, the four of them briefly chatted and laughed about Mona's promotion, after which Augustus asked Reesi and Mona to leave early, keeping only Luo An behind.
The door to the team leader's office closed, and Augustus, wasting no words, directly asked:
"Luo An, do you know who the supervisor of the Los Angeles Branch Criminal Investigation Division is?"
"I do. Chief Vireness gave me that person's contact information."
Upon hearing Augustus's question, Luo An nodded with a smile.
