Chapter 261: Chapter 259: Unavoidable

At the bedroom door, Adrian stood in a ludicrous women’s nightgown, smiling cheekily at Kate while holding a tray with two cups and some snacks. Suddenly, the scene before her overlapped with some images in her mind, and Kate felt a sense of dizziness that left her completely bewildered.

“I thought you might be hungry, so I called for some food,” Adrian explained, placing the tray on the bedside table, “The delivery guy probably thought he was at some gay’s home and ran off without even taking a tip. I don’t blame him, it’s my fault for wearing your nightgown.”

He sighed, looking rather helpless, and Kate almost laughed out loud. But she quickly recovered and stared at Adrian expressionlessly, “You were supposed to have left, weren’t you?”

“Left? Why?” Adrian sat down on the bed, asking with a tone of surprise.

Kate was taken aback; from start to finish, she had assumed Adrian had left. She gritted her teeth, steadying her heart, and asked in a cold tone, “Aren’t you leaving yet? Haven’t you done enough already?”

Adrian just smiled without saying a word, his hand caressing her cheek. Kate wanted to push his hand away, but hesitated for two seconds and just turned her head away instead. However, Adrian, damned as he was, brought up the events of last night, “You were truly wild last night, Kate. It’s hard to believe.”

“Um… I appreciate the compliment,” Adrian said, touching his chin with a grin.

Kate instantly became infuriated, glaring at him through clenched teeth, yet unsure how to retort.

“You seem to be in good spirits,” Adrian’s lips suddenly curled into a mischievous smirk, and it was clear he had another bad idea. He suddenly opened up the women’s nightgown he had on, wearing nothing underneath, “So, perhaps we can do something special this lovely—afternoon.”

“What do you want to do? Wait, Ed!” Kate panicked, pulling up the duvet to cover her chest, “No, don’t come any closer!”

She tried to slide off the bed from the other side, but her still weak body made her movements exceptionally slow, so Adrian quickly caught her from behind and placed her back on the bed.

“Wait, no,” Kate pleaded, “Last night… we already did enough last night…”

“You want to do what? Wait! Stop! Stop… stop… no… ah!”

============================

The afternoon sunlight streamed through the courtyard into the living room, casting a calm and harmonious glow. Despite the low temperatures in Los Angeles in January and the chilly breeze blowing in from the open sliding glass doors, the sunlight mixed with the breeze created a different kind of thrill.

Kate was slightly startled by her own actions and then grimaced bitterly.

Damn it, am I a pervert? Kate wondered gloomily. Or is it like Ed said, that I need a wild, uninhibited sexual experience that can release all my pent-up anger?

She couldn’t help but lift her eyes to Adrian, who was standing at the glass doors talking on his phone. Catching her gaze, he smiled, and his voice grew louder, causing every word to drift clearly into Kate’s ears.

“Okay, Charli, I apologize, okay? It was indeed my fault that I turned off my phone for three days and didn’t call you; thank you for handling those miscellaneous matters for me, I promise I will be back soon.”

“As for the remaining promotional work for those three movies, tell Laverne that I completely agree with his plan.”

“Okay, I will make time to call them individually, thank you for your advice; I am very satisfied, really, very satisfied.”

Kate involuntarily pursed her lips but then sighed. Adrian had been by her side all these days and hadn’t teased or forced her like before, enduring everything with a smile, just as when they had first started dating. Yet at the same time, he was very overbearing, always pulling her into his arms, whether they were sleeping or strolling the streets nearby.

Oh, of course, this was Ed, wasn’t it? Don’t forget how he treated you when you first met. Kate suddenly burst out laughing, shaking her head and becoming somewhat dazed.

After leaving his house that day and pondering for a few days, she finally became a bit more rational, planning in her heart, if he came to find her, to scold him fiercely first, then speak based on how he apologized.

Who knew, after waiting for weeks without a sign of him, she first felt disappointed and then lost. She was mentally distracted for weeks, unable to focus on her studies, even getting warned by her tutor twice, and her dorm roommate, Emily, found it incredible about her breakup with Adrian.

“Do you know how lucky you are, Kate? Do you realize how important opportunities are for a newcomer actor or director here in Hollywood? You know how envious I am of you!” Emily said, “God, I can’t believe it; you actually broke up with that genius director! He’s talented, capable, and owns his company. I dare say, if given the chance, at least 90% of the girls in this school would be willing to sleep with him!”

“What kind of statement is that?!” Kate angrily retorted, “Do you think I should just easily forgive him? Or turn a blind eye to his actions? Fine, if it was just a one-night stand with them, I could do that, but he’s been keeping a relationship with Monica Bellucci! Continuously! What do you think I should do?!”

“Of course, go win him back. You have the upper hand; he acknowledges you as his girlfriend, and you’ve said he’s a good man, you could completely try to tie him over bit by bit.” Emily painstakingly persuaded her.

“Enough, Emily, enough, I can’t believe you would say such a thing! I am not an object for him to play with! I don’t need to compete for a man who’s unfaithful!” An angry Kate finally said this, and thus their relationship dropped to a freezing point and never recovered.

From then on, Kate completely pushed Adrian out of her life, believing she could still succeed based on her efforts even without him. But reality quickly taught her a lesson, her agent managed to get her several good roles for auditions, yet she passed none, even though she had already acted in three movies in Hollywood and had somewhat shone in “Howards End.” After all, she was a British actor, still relatively unknown in the UK.

However, a producer thought she was okay and invited her to a friend’s party after the audition. Not quite understanding, Kate accepted right away. While the host didn’t make any physical moves at the party, his words were full of hints and flirting, leading her to flee out of panic and return to her dorm to cry.

Luckily, her agent, Roger, was rather dedicated and recommended another script to her. But Kate didn’t want to audition after reading it because the script was “Twisters,” originally written by Adrian for her.

But her agent finally convinced her, “You have to understand, Kate, you should seize every opportunity you can, or you’ll never succeed. Here, opportunities are always the most important.”

If it had been the former Kate, she probably wouldn’t have listened, but the current her had slightly grasped the harsh realities of life. Learning that Adrian wouldn’t produce the movie, she eventually agreed.

The rest was straightforward, auditioning, passing, and then starting to shoot. Kate spent about five weeks with the crew outdoors in Oklahoma and Texas. She tried her utmost, taking on many dangerous scenes herself, even though the crew had ample safety measures—like using high-intensity lighting to emphasize the gloominess of the weather and placing resin filters in front of the beams to protect the actors’ eyes. As for scenes where characters had to open car doors and leap in while the vehicle was moving, they were extra cautious.

Even so, unforeseen issues arose, and due to Kate pushing herself too hard, she ended up breaking two ribs in an accident, forcing her to be hospitalized for nearly a month before she could barely walk.

But this earned her the crew’s respect, and director Jean de Bont couldn’t stop praising her, calling her a paragon of a tenacious woman. Kate was pleased with their compliments, but at the same time, she involuntarily started missing someone, especially lying alone in the hospital’s cold bed looking at the ceiling—those usually suppressed thoughts uncontrollably erupted, leaving her heart in turmoil.

Despite her constant denial, denying any lingering feelings for Adrian, she could not avoid longing for the safety of his arms, nor could she avoid the intense jealousy when she heard rumors of him and Julia.(To be continued, to find out what happens next, please log in to www.qidian.com.
