For some reason, Cheng Yi suddenly really wanted to check his phone to see if Xinan had called, even just one message would be nice…

Cheng Yi found his phone on the couch, unlocked the screen, and saw that Xinan had called an hour ago.

She really did call!

But when he saw that the call had been answered, Cheng Yi’s face instantly fell, “Who just picked up my phone?”

His voice was somewhat icy, even angry.

The private room suddenly became extremely quiet, oppressively so.

After a minute, finally a scantily-clad woman spoke up, “I… I answered it.”

The woman was scared by Cheng Yi’s demeanor, her smile stiffening and her voice trembling as she explained: “Someone called and, since you went to the restroom, I answered it for you.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her you were busy and asked her not to call again…” Perhaps really frightened, the woman quickly confessed, not daring to hide anything.

Before she could finish, Cheng Yi suddenly reached out and slapped her hard on the face, crisp and efficient, without any hesitation.

With a sharp “snap,” the sound of the slap echoed through the entire private room as Cheng Yi looked at her coldly, a disdainful smile on his lips, “Who gave you the right to answer my phone?”

For a moment, nobody in the room dared to speak up, not even President Zhang dared to stand up for her.

The woman, stunned by the slap, cupped her swollen cheek and looked at Cheng Yi, “Mr. Yi, I’m sorry, I won’t dare to do it again.”

When she answered the call, she had been momentarily foolish; she had not anticipated Cheng Yi getting so angry. Had she known this would happen, she would have never touched the phone, let alone answered the call.

The more she spoke, the angrier Cheng Yi became, scoffing, “Won’t dare anymore? Every person who makes a mistake says they won’t dare next time.”

The woman was terrified and quickly spoke, “Mr. Yi, I really know I was wrong.”

Cheng Yi snorted coldly, “In the future, don’t let me see you in Jing City again.”

After saying that, Cheng Yi didn’t look at her again and walked straight out of the private room.

Once outside, Cheng Yi took out his car keys, got into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and the car sped off down the road, disappearing into the street in a blink.

Halfway through the drive, Cheng Yi slowed down, feeling he didn’t need to hurry back to explain.

Maybe he could use this opportunity to see how Xinan would react—be surprised, sad, or maybe not care at all…

Cheng Yi pulled over to the side of the road, lit a cigarette, took a deep inhale, and exhaled a long stream of white smoke.

Not until after he smoked two cigarettes did he restart the engine and head towards Luming Academy.

Xinan didn’t know how long she had been sitting on the couch; the TV series had already looped back to the second episode, but Xinan was too distracted to notice, just staring blankly at the fruit bowl on the coffee table.

It wasn’t until she heard the door that Xinan was brought back to reality, and as she turned her head, she locked eyes with Cheng Yi.

The moment Cheng Yi met Xinan’s gaze, his breathing became labored as he tried to discern anger or disappointment in her eyes, but there was nothing.

As a wife whose husband received a call in the evening answered by another woman, shouldn’t her first reaction be anger? Yet her demeanor was far too calm, devoid even of a single accusatory word.

Cheng Yi suddenly laughed self-deprecatingly; what was he foolishly fantasizing about?

A bitter taste filled his heart.

Xinan averted her gaze, having tried so hard to appear calm, but the sight of Cheng Yi still made her heart ache uncontrollably.

She really wanted to confront Cheng Yi, to ask who that woman was, why his phone was with her.

But she couldn’t; she had to appear more generous. She needed to be a considerate and proper wife, especially since what Cheng Yi hated the most was a woman who made groundless scenes. Doing so would only make him dislike her more.

Xinan gathered her emotions and then asked Cheng Yi with a smile, “Are you hungry? Should I make you some late-night snacks?”

Cheng Yi found Xinan’s smile particularly irritating, his expression darkening, “Xinan, can you be any more fake? Do you have any idea how ugly that smile is?”

Xinan’s smile froze. Despite her generous display, why was he still angry?

“Cheng Yi, I saw a suit today at the mall that would suit you perfectly,” her voice choked up a bit.

Saying so, Xinan picked up the suit bag and walked towards Cheng Yi, then held it out to him.

Cheng Yi eyed the suit in Xinan’s hand for a moment before looking at her, “Is this the birthday present you got for me?”

Xinan nodded gently, “Would you like to try it on?”

“Sure, but I want you to help me put it on,” Cheng Yi stated, word by word.
