I transmigrated and got a husband and a son!-Chapter 1223: Good ol’ days
Chapter 1223: Good ol’ days
After Hera and Dominic entered her ward, every one of them dispersed to do their own thing.
Bear returned to his ward and not long after, Ram came in.
"I see." Bear nodded, sitting on the bed with his back against the headboard. He gazed at the man in the chair, sighing. "You told her about this?"
Ram nodded. "I felt like a fool for keeping it from her when she already knew about it. Dominic told her."
"She might send us anywhere in the world, but she always finds her ways to find out everything." Bear couldn’t help but chuckle.
"She’s the worst kind of stalker." Ram also laughed. "I remember when she was little and stalked Vincenzo. I think the man got anxiety because of it."
When their chuckles subsided, Bear gazed at this old man. Ram was a good friend of his; they had been together since Vincenzo’s time. Back then, they often fought head to head while Wolf would just watch happily.
Bear couldn’t help but feel a little conflicted at the thought this friend of his only had a few months left to live.
"Fig is funding a research facility..." Bear trailed off when Ram shook his head.
Ram had this peaceful smile, a look that didn’t show any trace of fear of tomorrow.
"I’m old, Bernard," he said honestly. "I’ve lived a long, meaningful life."
Ram paused as he leaned back, reminiscing about his life with a smile. "I am grateful to have met Vicenzo and was devastated to attend his funeral. It’s the same for dearest Felice. I know you know what’s it like when we all thought Hera was going to die."
Bear’s silence was enough for the two of them to know his answer.
Vincenzo and Felice were a crucial part of their lives. If not for them, they wouldn’t even know what sort of life they would be having at this moment. Or rather, they wouldn’t even know if they were still alive. So, the mere thought that they would also facilitate Hera’s burial was ten times more painful.
They already lost those two. How could they stomach burying their child as well?
Bear lost Esmeralda because he couldn’t cope with Hera’s death. Ram lost a huge part of himself when he thought Hera had died.
"After seeing Hera today with Dominic, I can live with that, Bear." Ram got to his point with a smile. "Seeing her in good hands is enough for me to rest in peace. I’ve never seen her smile like that. At least, I almost forgot she could smile like that."
Bear’s eyes softened and leniently said, "Dominic will take care of her. I wouldn’t have stayed with him if I didn’t see him as her only hope."
"I know." Ram nodded.
Bear’s battle prowess was ten times better than anyone in the reapers. Even Tiger couldn’t compete. If Bear were with them, their morale would be a lot higher. However, for Bear to decide to stay with Dominic meant Dominic held the same importance as Hera’s life.
Now that Ram thought about it, he realized he was wrong.
Dominic didn’t hold the same importance as Hera’s life. He was Hera’s life, her world, and Bear simply stayed to protect it. Bear stayed to make sure Hera had a life to return to.
"Why are you smiling like that?" Bear noticed, seeing the bitterness that suddenly peeked in Ram’s eyes.
Ram snapped his eyes up. "I was just reminded of how I tried to protect her, and I didn’t deserve her mercy. I let her stay in Dragon’s custody, deluding myself that if she doesn’t remember, she would be happy."
"I would have done the same," Bear reassured but was sincere. "If fate wasn’t kind enough, I would’ve helped Dragon as well."
"You don’t have to make me feel better just because I am dying."
"I think... things happen for a reason." A subtle smile dominated Bear’s face. "But at the end of the day, we do what we think is right at the moment. I met Dominic because I wanted to move on from her death, but you stayed because you couldn’t let her go. If this phenomenon didn’t happen, I’m sure Hera would appreciate that at least one of us didn’t listen to her and stayed."
Bear nodded at him encouragingly. "She’s not the type to forgive, just because we’ve known her for a long time."
"I’m not sure about that."
"Me neither."
Both men laughed, knowing Hera could have a big heart, but at the same time, not exercise mercy. As they were laughing, someone suddenly kicked the door open.
Ram and Bear intuitively gazed at the door, only to see Wolf’s dark expression. Deep lines appeared between their brows before they caught the sly smirk creeping up on Wolf’s face.
"Look what I got, boys!" Wolf pulled his hands from behind him, revealing bottles of beer clamped in between his fingers. There were eight bottles in total.
"Like the good old days! Quick, catch!" he announced as he strutted in, tossing all the bottles in his right hand. Thankfully, Ram and Bear had quick reflexes and caught all of them in the air.
"Hah! Still swift, huh? I guess cancer and being old isn’t that bad for the two of you?"
"I want to fight him one last time," Ram muttered while looking at this devious old man.
Bear chuckled while shaking his head. "He only got white hairs and wrinkles, but he’s still the same old Wolf."
"I’m always in character, grandpas!" Wolf dragged a chair. "Isn’t that why I was called the big bad wolf?"
Using their teeth to open their beers, the three of them shared a few bottles of beer while talking about the past.
It had been a while since the three of them shared a drink, and this brought back the good memories of the good days.
The days they would share a bottle of beer while chatting happily, unaware of the time ahead of them. Only this time, Vicenzo wasn’t with them anymore. Even so, they spared an open bottle of beer, which no one touched for their good friend Vicenzo.
