Chapter 1209: He deceived me

Back on the ship, Ram and everyone inside searched for Charlotte quietly. The ship wasn’t that big and searching for him shouldn’t be as hard as searching for a needle in a haystack. And yet, they somehow couldn’t find him without raising panic among those they shouldn’t.

"Where did she..." Ram trailed off as he checked the kitchen, about to leave to check the other places but stopped.

His brows furrowed as he caught a shadow hiding in the little gap between the wall and some small cabinet. A weary smile appeared on his face as he approached. His footsteps were light, thinking just how petite Charlotte was, and he could surely fit in this little gap.

"It’s not safe for you to squeeze yourself into such a narrow space." A warm smile dominated his face as he peeked at the gap, only to see Charlotte gasping in shock. "I’m not gonna hurt you, I promise. Hera will kill me if I do. Don’t you trust your cousin?"

Charlotte pursed his lip as reluctance swirled in his eyes. Even so, he still squeezed himself out of the tiny gap. He hung his head low as he stood before Ram.

"I’m sorry, Uncle Ram." His voice was still the same meek and feminine tone. "Please don’t tell others about what you found out. My mother told me not to let others know, or it would be a problem. It scared me."

Ram figured Florence had a huge participation in why Charlotte looked so scared. Studying his frail figure, Ram leaned against the wall and slowly sat down on the floor.

Charlotte glanced at him and also sat on the floor. His knees were shaking out of fear and sitting down would ease it.

"I was just shocked," explained Ram. "But if you don’t want me to tell others, I’ll keep my mouth shut."

"Thank you, Uncle Ram." Relief shone in Charlotte’s eyes as he gazed up at the old man. "Will you not tell Hera?"

Ram shrugged. "That... I don’t know yet. Although I am old, Hera is still my boss. I still answer to her, but even when I don’t, I believe it’s best if she knows."

"But..." Charlotte trailed off with hesitation.

"But?"

"But my mother will not want that."

"What would Florence Oxley do? Kill her?" Ram chuckled. "Your mother is already trying to achieve that, doesn’t she? Did you forget where Hera was now and where we are headed? Hera and your mother might be fighting for their lives as we speak."

That was true.

Charlotte kept his eyes downcast while fiddling with his fingers. He got too scared that his secret was revealed and forgot that Hera was in the middle of a war.

"I somehow get the grasp of why this should be a secret." Ram’s calm voice sliced through the building silence between them. "But do not worry about it. If gender is a huge thing in the Oxley Family, in our world, it doesn’t really matter. You saw Hera, so I am hopeful you already understand why she’s the one in power."

"Won’t she get angry because I didn’t tell her about it?"

"You thought she would kill you at first sight." His chuckles somewhat made Charlotte a little at ease. "We are not perfect, and so was Hera. But one thing is that we’re not that shallow either. We understand you had your reason to keep this a secret. Moreover, we can’t expect you to trust us when we’re practically here to take down your mother."

Charlotte peeked at him, smiling wearily. "I’m just worried, Uncle Ram. Not only toward you but also... if the other families find out."

"And why would you get scared if the other families find out?"

"My mother told me they’ll scheme against us and put us in a tight spot," explained Charlotte. "They’ll use it as an excuse to ruin our family. Even with what’s happening now, I don’t want my secret to put Hera in a tricky situation."

His eyes brimmed with worry and fear. "Since I can’t help her, the least I can do is not give her more problems. She already has a lot on her plate and I don’t want her to die."

Whatever lies Florence fed this child surely had affected him.

Ram heard the basics of the Oxley Family history and had a vague idea of the family dynamics. Therefore, Ram knew that what Charlotte believed were nothing but lies Florence told him since the day he was born. If the other families knew Charlotte was a boy, they would help breed him to be the future of the Oxley Family.

They wouldn’t even look at Hera.

Even so, some other questions lingered in Ram’s mind because they didn’t make sense to him. He didn’t try to pry, though. Hera was already on the Oxley Island. Knowing her, there was a high chance she would stumble on the truth one way or another because she was that kind of person.

"Hera will not die," Ram reassured.

"How are you so sure, Uncle Ram?" Charlotte wondered. "Hera might be strong, but she is only human."

"Because..." She already died once or perhaps more than that, but she always found herself still alive in her own body or another one. "... because I believe in her."

Ram smiled and with great confidence, he said, "She has a reason to live and she won’t go down so easily until she achieves that goal."

[Oxley Island]

Hera was filled with rage at the naked truth that came up to her like a person crawling up on a haunted well. This time, she marched toward Florence without any caution. The latter was already hallucinating and, with that state of mind, she could take advantage of it.

"Felice, we have to —" Florence suddenly stopped and slowly turned her head on the large screen on the side. Her mouth was left open and her eyes slowly dilated, catching sight of the bloody war outside. However, what made her stop for a second was when she caught a familiar face.

"What is Dominic Zhu doing here?" she mumbled, making Hera stop.

Hera also averted her eyes to the screen, catching Dominic land on the island with some more people. She held her breath and felt his ominous feeling in her heart.

"And he is with Lukas Silvers..." Florence muttered before awareness slowly became clear in her eyes. "He deceived me. He didn’t kill him. Hah! So, he also turned on me, huh? Him and his brother... they dared deceive me as well?"

Florence laughed in ridicule because she had a deal with Dominic. Not so long ago, Dominic reassured her Lukas was on the plane with him.

Hearing the sudden change in Florence’s tone, Hera held her breath. When she set her eyes back to Florence, she caught her gazing down at the device in her hand with a wicked smile.

"I’ll kill him... I’ll kill all of you..."

"Hey!" Hera yelled and took a large leap toward Florence, but it was too late.

Florence only needed to press a button, and she did it just as Hera tackled her down.
