Chapter 1193: I’m not letting Hera step foot in my house.
"Yep. You’re her cousin."
Although there was a clear and huge difference between Hera and Charlotte, both of them could make a nerve in a certain part of Tiger’s head pulsate a few seconds after talking to them.
Carrying Charlotte like a pillow, he whistled.
"Hey, Hera, you sure this is your cousin?" asked Tiger as he approached Hera and Ram. "This girl looks like she came straight from the freezer."
"I heard someone mistook her as a ghost not long ago."
"Hell. I thought she was an evil entity!" Tiger stopped before them, darting his eyes between Hera and Ram. "Where should I throw her?"
"Put her down, Tiger." Ram glanced at Charlotte, who was looking up at him as if she was in disbelief a man could carry her so easily. "She’s a person."
"A person who’s missing a body bag." Just as Tiger was going to drop her, Ram added, "gently." Thus, Tiger put Charlotte down gently until the young lady was back on her feet.
"Tha — thank you."
"Welcome." Tiger casually snapped his eyes to Hera and then Ram. "Let’s go?"
"Mhm." Hera rocked her head and without any long ceremony, the two of them started walking away. As they made their distance from them and closer to the chopper, Charlotte observed the two of them.
Though petite and smaller compared to Tiger’s, Hera’s back exuded confidence. Just looking at her back, there was this distinct feeling of reassurance that embraced Charlotte so warmly. Hera’s back felt bigger than it was supposed to.
"Is this... what you all see?" she murmured, keeping her eyes on Hera’s figure.
Ram, who was standing beside her, glanced at her briefly. "It is."
Charlotte slowly faced Ram, pursing her lips into a thin line. "Do you think she’ll give my mother mercy?"
"No."
"Is that so?" she slowly lowered her eyes, sighing.
"I’m saying this once as a courtesy to Hera’s cousin. Whatever you heard about Hera before meeting her, they’re all true. She’s also the woman you met just now. However, don’t ever think anyone can take advantage of her just because they found out she has a soft spot," Ram warned politely but adamantly. "She already exercised mercy to Florence by keeping you alive. That’s the extent of her mercy because you know what your mother has done and how far she’s willing to go."
"I know that." Charlotte smiled weakly. "Even so, I feel like I’m betraying her."
"You are, Charlotte Oxley."
"But —"
"The moment you took Hera’s offer is the time you turned your back on Florence Oxley. Don’t tell me you didn’t have a choice, because you might be a strange young lady. But you are not that dim to exist." Ram rocked his head. "You had a choice, and you chose yourself. I’m not saying it’s wrong. Most people will also make the same decision. Your mother, for instance, will do the same if given those options. She killed her father, didn’t she?"
"No, she didn’t..." Charlotte trailed off when Ram raised his brows. "Is this what she meant by rewiring my brains?"
A short smile turned up on his face. "It is."
"You’re really good at this."
"I’m not good at it, but rather, I am simply bringing out the truth and making you agree with them because they’re the truth." Ram smiled humbly. "That guilt, young lady, is just one of the many more things a leader will carry till the day they die. If I am freely going to give you advice, then I’d say you better start learning how to carry such weight because if you can’t, the people you care about have to carry these burdens for you."
"Trust me," he added in a more solemn voice. "If you don’t learn this now, you’ll have to learn it the hard way and the tuition would cost you half of your heart and another half of your soul."
In all honesty, Charlotte didn’t want to listen to Ram’s advice just because it was a matter she couldn’t process immediately. Hera’s offer barely sank into her, after all.
"Just one question." Her voice was meek and careful. "Does Hera carry the same burdens?"
"It may not look like it, but you got no idea, little girl. She might carry it very well, but it doesn’t mean the weight on her back isn’t enough to cripple a person." freeweɓnovel.cøm
This sounded like a lie, but then again, Charlotte understood his message. Just then, another vehicle approached their vantage point before Charlotte heard a familiar voice.
"Charlie?"
Charlotte turned her head, only for her eyes to widen. "Ulysses?"
"Charlotte!" Ulysses rushed to Charlotte, looking at her from head to toe as if to make sure she was okay. "Huh? Why are you bound? Is everything okay?"
"Yes. Thanks to Hera."
"She saved you too?"
Charlotte glanced at Ram before she flashed Ulysses a smile. "Yes."
Ulysses sighed in relief as he cast Ram a grateful smile. Shifting his attention back to Charlotte, he offered to take off her bounds.
"Ulysses, what are you doing here, by the way?" Charlotte asked as soon as the bounds came off. "How come you were with them?"
Ulysses glanced at Ram and pressed his lips into a thin line. "It’s a long story, Charlie. For now, we have to go."
"Where are we going?"
"You’ll know once we reach there." Ram offered the two youngsters a smile. "Don’t worry. It’s the safest place for the two of you."
*******
Men in black gear camouflage with the darkness and the trees surrounding a huge mansion. They approached stealthily, even their breathing was controlled. With each whistle of the wind and rustle of the leaves, they took advantage of it to advance.
Meanwhile, in a particular mansion, Florence tapped her fingertips on the desk leisurely. When the door creaked in her ear, she slowly lifted her eyes to the door.
"Madam." Nigel lowered his head politely. "The traps are all set."
The corner of her lips curled up in satisfaction as she nodded. "Good work, Nigel."
As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, a loud explosion was heard beyond the parameters of the mansion.
"They’re here," Florence remarked with a smirk. "How many of her people do you think went off with that mine, Nigel?"
Another bomb detonated was heard while Nigel sighed. "All their front lines, madam."
"They’ll be more." A glint flickered across her eyes as she slowly gazed at the window from the distance. "Poor Hera. Her people would be cut in half even before setting foot in here."
The vicious smirk disappeared on her face, replaced by a thick layer of frost. "Tell our men to get ready. I’m not letting Hera step foot in my house."
"Yes, madam."
