Chapter 1176: Charlotte’s first taste of the outside world
[From: Axel Zhu
Don’t tell her my name’s Axel. I kinda trick her into believing I’m my brother.]
Ivy rolled her eyes, mentally cursing Axel for making this decision without even asking her. She wouldn’t mind if this were Sebastian or Miracle. Those two were a delight in the eyes and it would bring her great joy because looking at their adorable faces was enough to make one forget all the problems in the world.
"Is everything okay?"
Ivy snapped back to reality upon hearing Charlotte’s voice. She moved her eyes to the couch, where Charlotte sat daintily.
"Yes." Ivy forced a smile. "Wait a bit here. I’ll prepare the guest’s room."
"You don’t have anyone else to do that?"
Ivy smacked her lips but didn’t answer Charlotte’s question. From what she could see, this young lady was very naive. Or was it Dominic and Axel?
"I’ll be back and don’t touch anything." She said before walking away to the extra room in her unit. When she knew she was out of Charlotte’s sight, Ivy sprinted until she reached the room. The second she closed the door, she rang Dominic.
"Did they arrive?" was the first thing she heard from the other end of the line.
"Hah!" Ivy scoffed. "I called because I was about to ask you if you know what Axel’s been up to, but I don’t need to do that anymore."
"Mhm."
"Now, onto my next question." Ivy took a deep breath before she yelled. "Are you out of your mind?!"
Dominic, on the other end of the line, already held his phone away when he heard her take a deep breath. Fortunately, his assistant was his childhood friend. Or else it would have cost him his ears.
"How can you kidnap the daughter of your enemy, huh?" Ivy continued through her gritted teeth. "We already have enough problems, Dom. Our plate is already full. Don’t be greedy. Chase after money, not problems."
"Apparently, I’m now a public servant and I don’t chase after money."
"Exactly! You’re a public servant and the last thing you’d do is kidnap someone!"
"I didn’t kidnap her." Dominic frowned. "Why didn’t you ask Axel about that?"
"Letting Axel kidnap somebody is the same as you doing it." Ivy panted while running her hand through her hair. "Dom, listen to me. That girl might look like she was born yesterday, but once the mother hen finds out her chick is missing, she’ll turn the coop upside down."
"Ivy, it’s not me who is going to kidnap her, alright?" Dominic sighed heavily. "I’ll fill you in, so listen."
Since Dominic knew that without proper context, Ivy would bug him to no end. He didn’t want that, especially since his wife was on the other end of the line. Hence, he detailed everything, cutting down the long explanations into simple sentences. When he finished, Ivy was quiet.
"Do you understand now?" he asked. "We had no choice."
"You always had a choice."
"And I chose to let my little brother negotiate because he might be my little brother, but he’s proven that he’s a damn good businessman and negotiations are nothing but a walk in the park," Dominic remarked.
Hearing him, Ivy couldn’t refute that because it was the truth. Dangerous as it may, there was more reason Ivy relayed Axel’s message that night and did not stop Axel from meeting the madam. As the CEO of the Lyon Group, Axel had slapped everyone who underestimated him with his skills and sharp judgment in the market.
"So, what do we do now?" Ivy calmed down, resting her hand on her hip. "We can’t just keep her with us because I might be off people’s radar for now, but I’ll be on that list next to the Zhu."
"Just let her stay over for the night. Someone will pick her up tomorrow."
"Who?"
"Someone from the Reapers."
"What?"
"Hera already knew about Charlotte and since she already sent someone to pick up Grandma’s assassin, she said to send her cousin with them."
Ivy pursed her lips as she paced back and forth, biting her thumb. "Dom, this is dangerous."
"I know."
"What I’m saying is if you make any contact with her, it won’t be good," she stressed under her breath. "We all know that many eyes are on you. So, even if one looks away doesn’t matter."
"Ivy, I know." Dominic nodded even though she couldn’t see him. "I understand what you’re saying, but I’m careful. Do you trust me?"
Ivy stopped pacing and huffed. "I’m just reminding you, but if you say so, I trust you. If I didn’t, you wouldn’t have seen my application on your desk."
"Then look after her for the night."
"Fine." Ivy sighed once more, but before she could hang up, Dominic called her. "What?"
"Thanks."
A wry smile turned up on her face. "I’m not doing this for you and you know that. I want him back — safe and sound, that’s all."
"Even so, thank you."
"You’re welcome."
With that being said, Ivy gazed down at the phone and sighed for the umpteenth time. She then barely smoothed out the bed in the room just to make it appear she did something before returning to the living area.
As Ivy arrived, she caught Charlotte holding her hands behind her while staring at some photos on the stand in the corner.
"Your room is ready," Ivy announced, watching Charlotte jump in surprise.
"Oh!" Charlotte looked back at her and said, "I didn’t touch anything! I was just looking."
"It’s alright." Ivy nodded. "You should rest since it’s late."
Charlotte pursed her lips, not moving an inch from her spot. Seeing that she was just standing frozen, Ivy furrowed her brows.
"Is there’s something wrong?" Ivy inquired, only to hear the sudden rumble of Charlotte’s stomach.
"Hehe." Charlotte laughed awkwardly, hiding her stomach with her frail arms. "Sorry. I hadn’t eaten anything all day."
"..." Ivy blinked slowly, in disbelief at the Zhu brothers for not even properly treating the person that could get them killed. She helplessly shook her head and sighed. "Do you eat leftovers?"
"I’ve never eaten anything that isn’t prepared by Chef Roy and my nutritionist, but anything is fine! I’m just... famished." Charlotte looked conflicted while clasping her stomach. "Please don’t think of me as a burden."
How was this young lady a daughter of some mad woman?
Ivy felt slightly sorry for her and offered a meek smile. "I don’t think of you as a burden, but if you’re fine with anything, then take this as tonight’s your first time eating that isn’t prepared by your private chef."
Charlotte’s eyes brightened up, making it hard for Ivy to feel hostile toward her. With that being said, Ivy reheated the food she made tonight to feed the starving daughter of probably the most powerful woman in the world.
