Chapter 1162: cut your life short myself
"Why would I want to be number 2, when I should be number 1?"
Ram and Wolf guessed it right. When they heard that the first time, they couldn’t help but wince. After all, if there was a number Hera loathed was that number two.
"That is your concern with everything I said?" Ulysses was in disbelief. "Hera, I can repeat everything I said if there’s something that isn’t clear... to you." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
He trailed off as Hera retracted her feet from the table, facing him squarely. "You, listen here," she crooked a finger as she continued, "I don’t need you to repeat that long novel you got for us to not understand what you’re trying to do."
"You are telling me that I had to join your little cult if I want to survive?" Hera snorted. "And who gave you this idea?"
"You don’t understand," Ulysses frowned. "You’ll end up depleting all your resources, but the Oxley Family would barely have a dent. We’re doing this for you —"
"You’re doing nothing for me," she argued. "What you are doing is replacing someone that threatens the rest of the four families. Do you think I am better than Florence Oxley? She breaks the rules that everyone else strictly follows, yet you want to replace her with someone who is known for breaking even the laws of God."
"I thought if I put the numbers in, you’d get that I will never bend. But it seemed you don’t get it at all." Hera’s mood was a giveaway of how annoyed she felt at everything she heard. "My name is Hera Cruel. I am not an Oxley, and I will never be an Oxley."
As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, she pushed herself up. Gazing down at him, she sneered and walked away.
"Are you seriously going to put everyone you care for in danger just because you cannot accept that your mother is an Oxley?" Ulysses jumped from his seat, sensing that he wouldn’t get another word with her if he just let her leave now. "Hera, we are giving you a choice. That choice is for you to stop all these problems all at once! You don’t know Florence and what she’s capable of and I can assure you this battle with her is a loss. Winning also means a loss."
He balled his hands into a tight fist when she didn’t stop walking away. "Hera Cruel, is this the life you truly wanted? A life of a felon? If you become a part of the secret society, everything about Hera Cruel — your crimes will be nothing but a legend in the underground."
"This is your chance to start anew! Not just for you, but for all your people!" he added, raising his voice until it was echoing. "You can live just like what your mother always wished for you — Hera! Hera!"
"That’s enough," Ram sighed as he pushed himself up. "Young man, I understand and appreciate your effort in going all the way here to give Hera an option. But I’m afraid where this is gonna go is not up to you."
"But —"
"Felice ran away from home for a reason and all Hera’s life, she never heard anything about her mother’s family." Wolf also stood from the stairs languidly. "Now, after almost three decades, Hera hears about this family that she never knew. To make matters worse, her biological auntie wants to kill her for the sake of securing her position in the family when, in fact, Hera doesn’t care about it. She didn’t even know about this at all."
"Which only tells us that the four families, including you, overstepped. You provoked Florence or perhaps instilled fear in her. And now, the one paying the price for the mess you created is Hera," Ram continued in a grim tone. "Before you say you’re trying to help, be sure you’re not the cause of why she needed help in the first place."
Ram took a step, eyes on the young lad. "And don’t you dare bring up Felice, thinking it’s an effective way to make her change her mind. This will be the first and the last time because there will be no next time. I’ll cut your life short myself."
With that being said, Ram turned around and walked away. Wolf, on the other hand, strutted near the chairs and glanced at Ram.
"You better listen to the old man," Wolf whistled. "He’s kind and lets things slide so easily. Just do not cross Hera and you’ll have a big — a gigantic problem."
Wolf offered a wry smile at Ulysses, feeling a little sorry for the young man. Although what Ulysses said irked him, this little guy was still young. Hence, speaking out of turn wouldn’t be surprising.
"It’s not like we’re denying all the responsibilities we had," Ulysses expressed bitterly, holding Wolf’s eyes. "But what she’s wishing is a death wish. It may sound strange to you, but I meant it if I say I don’t want her to die. At least, not in the same hands as the ones who killed Aunt Felice."
"Well, give her some time." Wolf shrugged. "Put yourself in her shoes and imagine running a thousand miles while wearing her shoes. Maybe you’d understand her more."
Just then, the entrance opened, and Wolf gazed at it. As soon as he saw Deborah and Fig coming in, Wolf waved.
"Good timing!" Wolf beckoned the two to come. "Deborah, find these guys someplace to stay in the meantime."
"Are they guests?" Fig inquired, making Wolf ponder. "Since when?"
"They’re half guest and half hostages." Wolf grinned. "Hera hasn’t decided on what to do with them. So, Deborah, I’m counting on you."
Deborah blinked innocently, watching Wolf walk away after passing his responsibility on her. When she turned to Fig, the latter was already walking away from her.
"Uhm..." Deborah slowly gazed at Ulysses and the other two guards. She let out a shallow breath, unsure where she should take these three. After all, when did the Reapers accommodate half-hostages and half-guests?
"Uhm..." Deborah cleared her throat and forced a smile. "Do you want to see our torture house?"
Ulysses furrowed his brows. "Huh?"
"I think once you’ve seen it, it’ll help you decide whether or not to be on Hera’s good side or the evil side." Her lips stretched from ear to ear, assuming these guys were just like all the other guys Hera took home for the same reason. "Trust me. The decision will be much easier to make once you’ve seen it. Come. I’ll show you. Tiger just brought in your assassin."
