Chapter 1154: Old gentlemen in the base
"Butler Fu, why are you just answering now?" Dominic’s face turned sour as he finally reached someone from the ancestral home. "What happening in there?"
"I’m sorry, Young Master," expressed Butler Fu. "I was running an errand for the Old Madam and everyone already resigned to bed."
Dominic arched a brow and glanced at his wristwatch. It was almost midnight, which explained why everyone resigned to their beds. Dominic pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Did something happen in there?" he asked. "How was Grandma?"
"Uhm."
Deep lines appeared between Dominic’s brows, his eyes glinting. "What happened?"
"The Old Madam called for me a few minutes ago and... someone’s in her room."
"Who?"
"We are not sure yet." Butler Fu gazed at the bodyguards tying up the woman they found unconscious in the Old Madam’s bedroom. "The Old Madam is fine, though. She only told us to tie up the lady because someone else will pick her up."
"Someone else?"
"Let me talk to Dominic." Suddenly, Old Madam Zhu’s voice was heard. "I have to tell him — ah!"
"Madam!" Butler Fu’s voice panicked.
"Butler Fu, what’s happening?" Dominic also panicked. "What’s going on over there?"
"Call for an ambulance — the in-house doctors!" Butler Fu said to the people around him before talking to Dominic. "Young Master, the Old Madam is having chest pains. We’ll take her to the hospital now!"
Dominic and Butler Fu’s conversation was cut short as Butler Fu hung up. Dominic, on the other hand, stared at the phone with mixed emotions.
"We’ll go to the Heart General Hospital," said Dominic to Bear in the driver’s seat. "Butler Fu is rushing her there now."
Bear didn’t answer, but he did a turn for a reroute. He glanced at the rearview mirror, catching Dominic make some phone calls. Bear wanted to say something, but with Ivy — who was in the front passenger seat — looking at him like this, he held himself back.
"I know you’re worried about the Reapers," said Dominic after a moment. His attention was still on the phone. "But they are the Reapers. I have trust in them."
Bear glanced at the rearview mirror again, watching Dominic order Ivy to call for Old Madam Zhu’s physician. The doctor had to be there once Old Madam Zhu arrived at the hospital.
"I’m not worried about them," Bear clarified, keeping his eyes on the road.
"I’ll tell you everything you need to know," said Dominic. "For now, let’s focus on what’s in front of us."
Ivy covered her phone and looked back, keeping herself busy because she didn’t want to worry about the Reapers. Particularly, Tiger.
"What are we supposed to do with the one who came to Grandma’s room?" she asked to Dominic. "I was told the guard tied her up. Should we leave her in the police’s custody?"
"No." Dominic shook his head. "We don’t know if the Madam has planted her people in there too. They might let her go. Keep her in the cellar and don’t say anything about it to any of them."
"Got it." Ivy nodded and then went back on the phone to give instructions.
"There’s someone who intruded in the Old Madam’s room?" Bear arched a brow. "The madam did send an assassin to kill her?"
"To silence her," Dominic clarified.
"What happened to the assassin?"
"Butler Fu hadn’t explained yet, but he didn’t seem to know as well."
"I already asked someone to pull up all the CCTV clips around the mansion," Ivy said timely. "If Butler Fu didn’t know what happened and Grandma Zhu was not in a good shape to talk, those files might give us something."
Dominic nodded in satisfaction, pleased that Ivy was doing all this work without even asking him. Bear also couldn’t help but glance at Ivy.
"Check those files once we arrive, Ivy. Bear and I will stay in the hospital," Dominic ordered calmly, recomposing himself because he realized he shouldn’t let his discoveries cloud his judgment. "The Madam said she sent someone to end grandma. It only means she still doesn’t know she failed — we need to find out who saved Grandma."
With that being said, none of them had the leisure to talk more. Instead, they focused on what was important. Dominic sent out memos and warnings to the people whom he thought needed it. Ivy, on the other hand, called some people one after another to investigate the situation. Meanwhile, Bear remained quiet as he drove them to the hospital. Even so, his mind was busy trying to put the pieces together.

[REAPER’s BASE]
Wolf took a long drag of his cigar, puffing it out in the air. The smoke created a thick cloud, only to fade when it ascended to a certain height.
"I thought you’ve lost your touch, old man," he said, snapping his eyes at the old fellow in the driveway of the mansion. With one last bang, Wolf squinted one of his eyes. "But I guess I was wrong. Still as classy as ever."
Ram slowly turned his head on the stairs of the portico. Wolf was just sitting there, idling, unfazed by the bodies lying around the driveway and the front porch.
"My thoughts are the same," said Ram as he took out a handkerchief, wiping the blood splatter on the muzzle. "For a while, I was worried today’s your last day here on Earth."
Wolf smirked, tossing a cigar in Ram’s direction. Ram caught it midair with only one hand, smiling as this brought back some memories from the good old days.
"I find it insulting that they attacked the base when everyone wasn’t around," said Ram, clipping the end of the cigar as he looked around. "Did they think since two old gentlemen were left in charge of the base, they could easily infiltrate it?"
Wolf shrugged nonchalantly, resting his arms on his spread legs. "Well, I can’t blame them. Back in the day, they won’t even step foot in the mansion. But they reached this far."
"But not far enough to take down one of us."
"Haha!" Wolf grinned proudly, but then his smile slowly faded. "When are you going to tell her?"
"Hera doesn’t need to know."
"You’re dying, Ram," Wolf stressed, eyes on Ram. "She needs to know your condition." freeweɓnøvel.com
Ram looked at Wolf and smiled subtly. "I want to help her until the end, Wolf. If she finds out about this, not only she will force me to go to the hospital, but she will lock me in it. I do not wish to spend the remainder of my days in a hospital bed."
"Cancer sucks." Wolf shook his head and sighed. "Well, if that is what you want, I won’t meddle. But my stand remains. Tell her or she’d feel betrayed once again."
Ram just studied Wolf momentarily before he looked away. When his eyes fell on the bodies around, he said, "I kept a few of them alive..." he trailed off as they heard a chopper above. Both he and Wolf gazed up, furrowing their brows as they caught a white handkerchief being held out of the chopper.
"Who are they now?" Wolf muttered, watching the chopper slowly descend to the vacant lot within the base. "Should we kill them?"
Ram didn’t answer as he studied the chopper and the white handkerchief someone was holding out. "No," he said. "I don’t think they’re enemies... yet."
