Lucas and Kaela stood at the threshold of the next level, having narrowly escaped a pack of shadowfang hounds. Their beasts—Umbra and Zephyra—were already tense, ears twitching, sensing something ahead.

Lucas tapped on the system interface, pulling up the Side Quest: Forge of the Ancients.

Defeat the Guardian of the Forge.

Recover Ancient Smithing Ores.

Unlock the Blacksmith’s Legacy.

Just then, the system chimed again.

"What the hell is that?" she muttered.

The walls of the labyrinth cracked open into a large chamber. Hanging from the ceiling was the Hidden Boss: Vorthak the Web Tyrant, a monstrous spider the size of a house with glowing crimson eyes and obsidian-black legs covered in barbs.

A massive leg came crashing down, and Kaela narrowly rolled away. Thunder Fang was not so lucky—it was hurled across the chamber with a squeal of pain.

Lucas fused with Zephyra immediately. The twin daggers shimmered, transforming into full twin curved blades. His eyes glowed with wind energy as he darted in a blur, slicing the monster’s limbs.

But Vorthak was prepared. A massive burst of webbing erupted from its body, sticking Lucas to the wall. A second volley aimed for Kaela.

"NO!"

Umbra roared and blocked the attack with his massive body, now covered in obsidian-hardened fur, tanking the damage.

Lucas activated Gale Severance, cutting himself free. He dashed toward Kaela, but Vorthak’s barbed legs lashed out and pierced her side. She screamed.

Blood pooled beneath her. Lucas caught her just in time, pulling her back as Umbra and Zephyra covered their retreat.

The system flashed.

Retreat recommended. Boss level too high.

Lucas ground his teeth. "We’ll come back for you, bastard."

They escaped through a collapsing tunnel, leaving behind the monstrous screech of Vorthak.

Outside the Labyrinth

Kaela was stabilized with potions, breathing shallowly.

Lucas opened the class screen again. His rage focused his decision.
