Maxine's arms and legs felt dead. By the time the waitress clocked out of Creamy Coffee several people came through. Though, none of them were as interesting as the group of cosplayers she served. The woman looked into her purse, gazing at the stack of heavy gold coins.

She'd tried preliminary tests that people say to do online to see if it's real gold. Maxine had even taken a bite of one of the coins, but she still had no idea. She was a waitress and college student, not an appraiser.

The coins clacked against each other as the girl exited the coffee shop. Luckily for her, the shift ended in the middle of the afternoon, so plenty of places were still open. And even if it didn't, New York was the city that never sleeps at night.

She walked down the avenue, eventually finding the sign she was looking for. The small building was nestled in between two much larger ones, and it had red white and blue lettering.

Maxine read the words aloud. "Eagle Avenue Pawn Shop." She paused before looking at the slogan underneath the name. "If America can pawn it, we can buy it."

The girl snorted before opening one of the glass doors. A bell chimed on her entry, and the first thing her eyes focused on were the rows of guns at the back of the store. Rifles hung along the wall in a locked case, and a counter was in front of those. This glass counter top also contained pistols inside.

An elderly man in a red flannel smiled at Maxine as she entered.

Maxine returned the gesture and strolled up to his counter.

"What can I do you for, Miss?"

"Hi, yes, I'm Maxine, and I was curious if you could check something for me. I need to know if I have real gold."

The man nodded and held up a finger. "Just wait one second, Maxine. I am a licensed appraiser, so I can tell you if they're the real deal."

Maxine watched the man disappear into the back of his store, only to come out a little later with several tools. He placed a microscope on the desk and a small scale next to that. Afterwards, he placed a small tube of acid on the counter and some other equipment.

The elderly man smiled. "You can call me John, by the way. This process shouldn't take too long. Just place the gold on this scale."

Maxine nodded and reached into her purse, pulling out the large gold coin and placing it down on the scale.

The man donned a pair of gloves before he looked at the weight measurement. "1.2 troy ounces...That's a promising weight."

He picked it up and inspected the strange insignias and ridges along the edge. "Though, I've never seen this design before in my life."

Maxine watched the man begin to pour his different acids along the gold, and his face gradually got more and more impressed.

"You've really got something here, lady." As the man observed it even further, his eyes widened. "This is 24 karat gold. That means it's the purest form you can get." fгeewebnovёl.com

Maxine's eyes widened. "What the hell!?"

"I'm telling you, this is the real stuff. This thing is worth at least 50,000 dollars on its own."

The girl's eyes widened in disbelief. She quickly grabbed another handful of those gold coins from her purse and placed them on his desk. "And what about this many?"

"How the hell did you fit all of that in your purse? Is there even more in there?"

Maxine nodded tentatively.

"Jesus, girl, did you rob the US treasury or something?"

"No, that's the craziest part! I'm a waitress!"

"Right...And how did a waitress come upon this much gold?"

Maxine smiled wryly. "You may not believe this, but it was given to me by a customer."

The elderly man sighed and grabbed the bridge of his nose. "This will be a problem to purchase. For one, I cannot buy this whole stock, and for two, there will need to be an investigation before we can complete the purchase. Any sale this big would not be legal for me to do, and we have to go through the government."

Maxine sighed. "I guess that's fine, but how many are you able to buy?"

"I can probably buy about 5 million worth. Though, it's natural that the feds are probably going to track down who you bought this from."

"Will something bad happen to her?"

The man placed a finger on his chin. "Not necessarily. If she didn't steal any of them, there won't be a problem. If she really didn't steal any of them, then you might be the luckiest girl in New York. If everything all turns out good, I will probably be able to buy the rest from you at a later date."

Maxine shook his hand with a smile. "Thank you so much! Please take care of everything for me."

"Don't mention it," the man said, reaching for his nearby phone. "I have a contact with the FBI, so this might be able to be resolved rather quickly."

Maxine flinched at the mention of a real federal agent, but she chose to remain quiet. At the very least, she wasn't the one that stole them, so it wouldn't be her going to prison if they were stolen.

Once the man was done talking to his contact, he pushed a piece of paper towards Maxine. "Fill out this form. Leave all of your contact information, so that we have a way to get a hold of you. If you want, you can keep all of the coins here for safe keeping." The man chuckled at Maxine's worried expression. "Don't worry about me stealing them. I wouldn't risk my business like that."

With a sigh, she dumped out the rest of her gold coins and started feeling out the forms. Who knew that I would suddenly have the potential to be a millionaire?

The woman considered what she would even do with so much money. Even with the rise of inflation, a million was still a lot of money, and it was more than most people would ever have access to at one time.

Maxine signed her name on the dotted line before giving the paper back to the elderly man. She thanked him for his services before fleeing onto the street. Maybe with this much money I will finally be able to move away from this blasted state?

She placed a finger to her chin, considering her options. "Didn't those girls say they came from Japan?"

Maxine thought about all of the anime and manga she read, blushing at the recollection that she'd asked a Japanese person if they liked anime. I wonder if that was considered a rude question to ask?

She thought it was kind of funny at the same time. Maxine pictured being in another country and having people ask if she liked hamburgers. I definitely do like hamburgers though…

The girl let out another long sigh, finally remembering the pain in her legs. "Working sucks. I hope all of this stuff pays off, so I can live differently."

As she rounded a corner, she took in the same sight that she'd seen earlier on in the day. There was yellow tape surrounding an apartment building not too far from her own place. Only this time, she saw something she didn't expect at all.

The girls that had caused all of the chaos in her day walked out of the building at once, seemingly talking nonsense. Moreover, none of the police officers even tried to stop them. They just let the girls slip underneath the yellow tape and keep walking.

Maxine watched from just around the corner, peaking her head around. However, vivid red eyes turned towards her at that moment. The vampire cosplayer's vibrant eyes seemed to glow and stare at Maxine.

The waitress tried moving her legs to flee, but the inside of her mind was completely capture. Something had her stuck in that place. It was an incomprehensible feeling in her brain. It was as if she stood at the very bottom of an endless white staircase, and up above her, it continued forever.

Blackness surrounded the staircase on all sides, except for the very top of the stares. Two piercing crimson orbs gripped her, commanding her to move forwards on the stairs.

In the real world, Maxine's legs followed the command. She moved forwards, and the version inside of her mind took the first steps towards oblivion. The eyes got closer, and Maxine's physical body approached the group. A familiar voice spoke out and shattered the illusions in her mind.

"That's the waitress from before. Please release her, Mizuko."

The red-eyed girl nodded and smiled, showing off her white fangs. "Mistress is a softy like always…"

Hikari sighed and looked into the eyes of Maxine. "Are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Maxine's eyes blinked, and the girl finally came back to reality fully. Both her physical body and her mind recognized where she was and who she was looking at, but the experience from before was burned into her soul.

"Who are you people? You're definitely not…"

The one to answer her was the girl with dragon horns. "Humans?"
