Chapter 304

2-in-1 chapter:

-----------------------

“Ora!”

“Ora!”

“Ora ora ora ora ora!!!”

Unohana Retsu laied on the ground, a complex look in her eyes as she watched the man perched atop her Zanpakutō, pounding away as though kneading dough.

Although Minazuki had taken the form of a blade, its essence was blood—liquid.

As people often say, you can’t chop water with a sword, and trying to pummel a liquid with brute force should be a futile gesture.

This content is taken from freeweɓnovel.cѳm.

Yet through her bond with her Zanpakutō, Unohana could sense that Minazuki was truly being suppressed by that relentless barrage of punches.

At first, Minazuki fought back furiously.

After all, by its own nature, it had to kill Unohana if she lost in battle.

But as Kaelith continued hammering away, Minazuki gradually settled down.

In the end, under Unohana’s incredulous gaze, it fell completely silent.

Seeing that it had stopped struggling, Kaelith held his fist in midair and called out:

“You stubborn blade—still planning to devour your wielder?”

Buzz, buzz!

Minazuki trembled twice in response.

Kaelith let out a hearty laugh. “That’s more like it. Now that’s a good Zanpakutō!”

With that, he got off Minazuki.

A faint shimmer crossed its surface, and it reverted from Bankai to its normal sword form.

Unohana said nothing, though inwardly she felt as if Kaelith was communicating with her Zanpakutō more smoothly than she ever had.

Kaelith picked up the blade and walked over to her, then planted it firmly in the ground.

Finished with that, he seemed to recall something. He opened his hand toward his own Zanpakutō, Rixiang Jimie, which lay discarded some distance away.

It sprang into the air with a clang, flew into his waiting grasp, and he slid it back into its sheath in a single smooth motion.

Kaelith patted his sword’s hilt approvingly, then turned to Unohana.

“Ahem… Captain Unohana,” he said, almost slipping into the mocking “sow” nickname again, “time for your answer.”

Unohana looked at him in silence for a long moment before speaking:

“I’ll stay by your side, waiting for the day we cross swords again in earnest. If your progress ever falters, I won’t hesitate to kill you. Keeping me alive means keeping a blade that could turn on you at any time.

Are you sure you want that?”

Kaelith grinned.

“Of course—no problem at all! I have plenty of people eyeing my back every single day, so one more won’t make any difference.”

Unohana’s expression turned a bit peculiar. Though he sounded flippant, somehow it didn’t feel bad.

She took a deep breath and slowly sat up. Blood seeped from her many wounds with every movement, yet she paid it no mind and forced herself to stand face-to-face with Kaelith.

Then she reached out and pulled her Zanpakutō from the ground.

“In that case, allow me to watch you from up close and see what future you create. This life of mine—meant to end but left lingering—I’ll entrust it to you, Kaelith.”

Unohana Retsu smiled, an elegant curve to her lips.

….....

.

“Big Bro’s gonna eat what today? Big Bro’s gonna eat spare ribs~!”

“Big Bro’s gonna do what today? Big Bro’s gonna teach punching lessons~!”

“Big Bro’s gonna play what today? Big Bro’s gonna play ‘Seated Officers’~!”

A patrolling Shinigami hummed his jaunty tune while passing by Kaelith’s study.

He glanced at the door and smiled.

Ah, the Big Bro’s study…

He must be in there working!

I’d love to see how dashing he looks, hard at work…

With Big Bro’s vigor, even paperwork would look stylish.

Kenjirō, you’ve got to try harder! Someday, you’ll become strong enough to stand beside him!

Just as Kenjirō was silently cheering himself on, he saw the door open.

Oh! Is Big Bro coming out?

His eyes lit up as he stared intently, but the person stepping out made him freeze.

Long black hair. A white haori.

Captain Unohana Retsu of the Fourth Division.

Under normal circumstances, that alone wouldn’t have shocked him, but Unohana’s clothing was in disarray, her hair only loosely tied. She didn’t carry her usual composed elegance.

Far more startling was the contented smile on her face—and an unusual flush to her cheeks.

Upon noticing Kenjirō, Unohana narrowed her eyes.

In that instant, Kenjirō felt himself lock up completely.

It was pure, unadulterated killing intent, like a snake’s trap snapping closed on a frog, or Jack drifting helplessly into the icy waters of Newfoundland.

He wanted to fight back, but he couldn’t move a single finger.

He couldn’t even breathe.

Just when he thought he was about to die under that murderous aura, it vanished.

Unohana flickered from sight with a rapid Shunpō.

“Hey, Kenjirō! Skipping work again? Hurry and keep patrolling!”

A voice called from afar.

It was another Shinigami on patrol, striding over to scold this slacker.

But as he opened his mouth, he noticed Kenjirō’s whole body trembling.

“Hey, Kenjirō, what’s wrong?”

Kenjirō turned, grinning with excitement.

“Toki… Big Bro really is unstoppable!”

“Even a woman that strong—strong as they come—ended up with him!”

“Big Bro is unbeatable!!”

Toki stared in silence.

His coworker was probably losing it.

In the Fourth Division headquarters, at the captain’s office:

Lieutenant Yamada Seinosuke stood outside the door, face pale with shock.

He’d come seeking Captain Unohana’s input on new recruits. But the moment he knocked, a letter slipped off the door.

He picked it up and saw two words on the envelope: “Final Testament.”

Without thinking, he opened it. After a quick read, his pupils shook.

“Captain… She left to fight someone, and if she’s not back by nightfall, it means she’s dead?”

“That’s impossible! Captain Unohana’s invincible—who could kill her?”

His mind leaped to Captain-Commander Yamamoto’s image.

Could Yamamoto have…killed Captain Unohana?

That made no sense.

In that short-lived shock, fury began to burn in Seinosuke's eyes.

He didn’t know why the Old Man would do it, but he wouldn’t stand for it!

He had to confront Yamamoto, demand an explanation!

But if Yamamoto had truly killed Captain Unohana, what could he possibly do? It would be like a toddler taking on an unstoppable giant.

He needed to find someone capable of toppling Yamamoto—a comrade in arms.

At that thought, Kaelith flashed through his mind at once.

Yes, Kaelith!

Surely that man could overthrow Genryūsai Yamamoto…

After all, he’s the one who emerged from the rebels triumphant!

Seinosuke spun around, ready to head straight for the 11th Division.

But then he saw Unohana Retsu approaching.

“C-Captain?” Seinosuke gaped in disbelief.

Unohana glanced at her lieutenant’s confused expression. Then she spotted the “Final Testament” in his hand and seemed to understand.

She offered him a faint smile.

“I made it back alive, Lieutenant Yamada. So that letter isn’t needed anymore.”

She turned to enter the room.

Seinosuke was stunned. This made no sense.

He blurted, “Captain, what exactly is this about? What happened out there? Your letter said you’d likely die—who were you talking about?!”

Unohana paused and turned to him.

“Every word in that letter was true. Initially, I did plan to die. But now, I’ve found a reason to keep living—something far better than death.

“I will follow Kaelith and become his strength.

“Good night, Lieutenant Yamada.”

With that, she gave a brief smile, entered her office, and shut the door.

Seinosuke stood there, speechless.

“…”

“…?”

After a long silence, a bewildered expression spread across his face, eventually contorting in anger.

You vile criminal, Kaelith! What have you done?!

For the first time in a while, Kaelith visited the World of the Living.

This time, it wasn’t exclusively to train Bambietta.

Well, not entirely for that, anyway.

He was here with Kisuke Urahara, checking on his company’s operations.

Ever since Yūtendō Inc. launched the lspp, it had ignited the World of the Living’s passion for gaming.

In the past, the lsp1 and lsp2 were interesting enough, but nowhere near as portable as the new lspp.

Suddenly, playing the lspp became a worldwide trend—practically every youngster on Earth was into it.

The local branch of his company had even pulled off an outrageous stunt:

They hired an actress to dress up like the figure on paper currency and sing comedic lyrics promoting the lspp. The video was clipped and remixed endlessly, sparking a wave of online memes.

Following Kaelith’s suggestion, the lspp could connect directly to a computer for livestreams. An explosion of gaming content followed, with videos popping up like mushrooms after the rain.

According to Kisuke Urahara, development teams across the globe had poured into console design. Now the technology in the World of the Living outstripped that of the Seireitei, and it wouldn’t be long before these mortal-made gaming products started flowing back into Soul Society.

Kaelith welcomed it wholeheartedly.

The more flowers in bloom, the faster the golden age comes, he liked to say.

He and Kisuke spent an entire day in a district called “Natsuhara,” fulfilling their shopping desires.

By nightfall, Urahara had booked only one room at the inn, assuming Kaelith would surely seek out Bambietta anyway.

Unexpectedly, after taking a bath, when Kisuke was ready to sleep, someone hopped in through the window.

Seeing Kaelith enter, a startled Kisuke blinked.

“Ah, Kaelith,” he managed, glancing uneasily at his own towel-wrapped self.

“Kaelith… I thought you, uh, weren’t really into men?”

“Hmm?”

Kaelith gave him a blank look, then grinned.

“Oh, men? Nah, Kisuke, I’m so overwhelmingly manly that as far as I’m concerned, men and women are the same—they’re all women to me!”

“…?!”

Kisuke was thunderstruck.

If anyone else said that, he’d laugh it off as a joke. But with Kaelith, you could never be sure.

He instinctively thought about fleeing.

Kaelith, however, just waved a hand and settled in a chair.

“All right, I’m done joking around.”

(Was that really just a joke? Could I get that in writing…?) Kisuke fumed silently.

He watched Kaelith grab an apple and take a crisp bite.

“Kisuke, what should we do next?”

“Hmm? You mean about the game console?”

Kaelith shook his head and pointed upward.

“I’m talking about the Soul King.

“I’ve thought about the power we have now. Aside from Old Man Yamamoto and the Monk, our group can outmatch any Shinigami force. Even if Yamamoto jumps in, I’m confident I can stall him long enough for the others to finish the job.

“But that Monk? I have no idea how to handle him. What do you think?”

Kisuke was taken aback.

“Why not consult Aizen?”

“That won’t work,” Kaelith replied, shaking his head. “He told me not to poke around about the Soul King and the Monk. If I meddle, he’ll make me regret it.

“Hah! As if I’d be scared off by that. I’m Kaelith—I won’t be cowed by some petty warning.

“We’ll work out our own plan right here, behind his back. Once we topple that big-bearded Monk and seize the Soul King’s ‘throne,’ I can’t wait to see the look on Sōsuke’s face!”

Kisuke fell silent.

It was obvious Kaelith had deliberately come to the World of the Living for secrecy, which hardly disguised how nervous he was about Aizen.

Still, Kisuke didn’t blame him—he was uneasy about Aizen too.

“Ahaha… Kaelith, if Aizen said all that, he likely has his reasons. Maybe we should wait until he figures things out. Once he gives you the green light, we can—”

He couldn’t finish. Kaelith’s brow twitched, and in the next moment, he pounced, pinning Kisuke to the floor.

“You traitor! You’ve clearly sold out to Sōsuke!”

“H-hey, wait!” Kisuke shouted.

He knew Kaelith’s terrifying strength from their time in Hueco Mundo, and one solid blow from him would be catastrophic.

As Kaelith raised a fist, Kisuke hurried to speak:

“Hold on, hold on! Listen—about the Monk, I don’t have any ideas yet. But I did find new intel on the Soul King that might tie in to what happened to you at the Royal Palace.”

He looked serious.

“Kaelith…I think the Soul King’s throne might really be compromised!”
