Chapter 148: The truth?

It was already evening

Brandon was driving the car back home while Elize was sitting in the front passenger seat looking through the pictures they took earlier.

"Wow, we got some nice pictures..."

Her smile widened and her eyes softened in affection as she looked at the image.

She was wearing a sleek black dress and Brandon’s arm is around her, both of them grinning with a shared joy.

She glanced at him, her expression softening "This one’s my favorite, Kael. You look so happy."

Brandon took a quick glance at the picture and smiled "Yeah? Guess I was having a good time then."

Elize chuckled, her fingers swiping to another photo and this one is a picture of Brandon’s goofy tongue-out expression from their first attempt. "Oh, this one’s going in the archives,"

She leaned back in her seat, "We should do this more often, you know. Just you and me, making memories."

Brandon’s gaze grew tender, a quiet warmth spreading through him at her words. "Yeah, we should," freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"It’s been a while since we just... hung out like this. Thanks, Aunt Elize. For today."

She nodded her head "We definitely should."

The car rolled into the driveway of their home as Brandon parked.

Elize gathered her phone and the shopping bags as she stepped out of the car.

Brandon followed, grabbing the remaining bags from the backseat before locking the car.

---

"Haa..." Brandon leaned back on the plush couch, his body sinking into the cushions as he let out a soft, contented breath.

"That was good food."

Elize who was sitting beside him, let out a soft chuckle and patted his head, ruffling his hair.

At this time, Ravene also walked to the couch and sat beside him, leaning her head on his shoulder.

Brandon smiled as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer until her head rested comfortably against his chest.

He pressed a quick kiss to the top of her head, his fingers tracing lazy circles on her arm

They sat silently in each other’s arms for a while.

A bit later, Elize stood up and walked to the door "I will take a short walk to get some air..."

Looking back at Brandon, she smiled "Wanna give me company?"

Brandon glanced at Ravene and she gently raised her head from his shoulder. "Mhm. Go on, I’ll be here."

Brandon leaned forward, his hand cupping Ravene’s cheek as he pressed a quick, tender peck to her lips, "Be right back,"

Ravene settled back on the couch, pulling a throw blanket over her lap, as she watched them go.

Outside, the night air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of dew and the sky was a deep indigo color, dotted with stars.

Elize zipped up her jacket and her breath condensed into a soft mist in the cool air as she stepped onto the porch.

Brandon walked behind her with his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie.

Elize glanced at him, her smile softening as she matched his pace, her hands swinging lightly at her sides. "It’s nice out here. Clears the head, you know?"

Hearing this, he gave a faint nod and they continued their slow walk in the silent neighborhood.

The night air wrapped around them and the faint rustling of leaves filled the air.

A distant streetlight cast a soft, golden glow on the sidewalk as Elize and Brandon walked slowly side by side.

Elize walked with her arms folded loosely over her chest, her fingers lightly rubbing her upper arms as if trying to ease her tension.

"Kael..." she said quietly, not looking at him.

Her voice carried a mix of hesitation "Earlier... in the shop, I told you that you’re like my son. But..."

She let out a quiet sigh, her gaze dropping to the sidewalk. "You know I’m not your real mother."

Brandon blinked, tilting his head slightly to glance at her in mild confusion. "Yeah, of course. You’re my mom’s friend,"

Elize gave a faint nod, her lips curling into a nostalgic smile before fading again "And... growing up, Kael, you never asked about your real mother. Not even once."

Brandon stopped walking for a moment, and so did she.

He turned to face her fully, and his gaze was gentle, "That’s because... you were always there, taking care of me. You were the one who packed my lunch, helped me with my schoolwork, nursed me when I was sick, taught me how to ride a bike..."

He laughed softly remembering those memories, then continued with warmth in his eyes. "You did everything. So... it always felt like you were my real mom."

Her heart fluttered with emotion at his words, and her throat tightened as she tried to hold back.

She reached up and gently cupped his cheek with her palm, brushing her thumb lightly against his skin. "I’ll take that as a compliment," she whispered with a watery chuckle.

"But Kael... I still want you to know about your mother. You’re a grown man now. And I think... this might finally be the right time."

He stared at her quietly and after a moment, he gave a nod "Mhm."

Elize slowly reached for his hand and intertwined her fingers with his, "Your mother’s name is Marzella Quillhart."

Brandon’s lips parted slightly "Marzella..." he repeated under his breath, tasting the name for the first time.

"She was brilliant, Kael. Truly brilliant,"

"A genius in etheric sciences... actually, even more gifted than Ravene, if you can believe it. Your mother, she contributed so much to what we understand today about ether structure, aberrant mutations, and rupture behaviors."

"Her name appears in dozens of white papers, research archives, and academic journals... even those used by Academies and military divisions."

Brandon’s brows furrowed slightly "I think.. I have heard this name."

Elize smiled bitterly "I see, I am glad to hear that."

Brandon took a step forward, leading them to a nearby park bench beneath a softly glowing streetlamp.

Looking at her, he muttered "And later, she died in an accident and you took me in."

A soft sigh escaped Elize’s lips and she shook her head "No... it was not an accident. She was killed."

Huh? Brandon blinked in surprise "She was killed? ...By whom?"

Letting out a deep sigh, Elize spoke "... She was killed by the government, the Sovereign Circle."

By Sovereign Circle?

Snapping out of his shock, he asked "Are they jealous of her brilliance?"

With a shake of her head, Elize muttered "Not jealous... it was fear. Marzella was doing some dangerous experiments and if those experiments became successful, it would change the entire balance of the world."

Brandon frowned. "What kind of experiments?"

Looking at him, Elize replied in a calm tone "She was trying to find a way for men to use ether.."

Huh?

Brandon was taken aback to hear this and with a deep sigh, Elize continued "She believed that the reason men can’t use ether wasn’t because of biological or divine reasons. It was something else..."

"I know she was doing those experiments and as an Empyrean, I was giving her financial funds. I supported her quietly, off-record, supplying her with what she needed."

"But suddenly one day she said that she wanted to have a child."

"We three agreed and got a sperm donor and did artificial insemination on her and got her pregnant."

"Me and Ravene. We were the only people she trusted completely. The three of us had always been close, sisters in all but blood."

"At first I thought the reason she wanted a child was... maybe she was lonely and maybe wanted to raise a child."

"We also supported her. Everything was done cleanly, away from the Circle’s notice. And a few months later... she was pregnant with you."

"And she successfully gave birth to you."

"However, the government somehow found out that she is experimenting with a way for men to use ether."

"And you know the government... if men can really use ether, the whole system would collapse."

"So, they killed her."

"After learning the situation, I went to the headquarters of the Sovereign Circle and killed the world leader for revenge."

Eh? Brandon was dumbfounded and she continued "After that, I got pressure from all sides..."

"I became the enemy of the world. The Council stripped me of my authority. Friends abandoned me. I was accused of abusing power and letting personal feelings override my duties as an Empyrean."

"And maybe... they were right."

"I didn’t care. You were just a few months old, Kael. I couldn’t fight a war and raise you at the same time."

"I wanted to take care of you. So I broke my own ether core and stepped back from the Empyrean role and became a normal human... so I can be your mother."

Hearing this, Brandon’s heart swelled with guilt "Elize..."

She looked into his eyes "But after you awakened your powers, I realized that you are the experiment of Marzella."

"Your ability to manipulate ether is not coincidental; it was because of your mother that you got the powers."

"You were her hope. Her theory, her belief that the human male form could carry ether if certain genetic parameters were met, was something she couldn’t test on others."

"So she crafted you, carefully, from donor DNA, from her own bloodline, from every inch of knowledge she had accumulated."

"You were born with the potential to wield ether."
