Chapter 198: Chapter 198: The Would-Be Student Comes Knocking

All five little cuties were sitting on the higher platform, eating.

Little Panda Sister Jin Yan and Manman snuggled up together, with Manman picking up a small piece of apple, offering it to Jin Yan first, and then slowly nibbling on another piece herself.

When Chen Ying walked in, three timid little ones swiftly climbed higher up the trees, watching him warily.

Jin Yan stood in front of Manman, rising to her feet and lifting her hands to threaten Chen Ying.

Manman peeked out from under Jinya’s armpit, looked twice, and tugged at Jin Yan.

“It’s that ‘Two-legged beast,’ the one who saved you.”

Only then did Jin Yan relax her body, carefully taking in Chen Ying’s scent.

“He stinks, reeks of cat.”

Jin Yan, not liking the clouded leopard scent on Chen Ying, climbed with her little apple onto the trunk of another tree. Glancing back and seeing that Manman didn’t move, she came back to nibble on her ear, trying to drag her away.

Manman moved slowly and, being larger, Jin Yan struggled to drag her away for quite a while.

Jin Yan was so frustrated, she almost exploded with anger, but had no choice but to stay behind and keep her company.

Seeing Jin Yan proactively protecting Manman, Chen Ying smiled without getting too close.

He knew that treating several clouded leopards recently meant his scent was inevitably steeped in theirs, representing a threat to little creatures like red pandas with their low ‘combat power.’

Daddy, ever gentle, watched the little ones. Not long after, as if recognizing who Chen Ying was, the little ones scampered back down, with the braver one even running to his side, wanting a hug.

Jin Yan wanted to stop them but worried about Manman, eventually only managing to huff at the cuddly red panda.

“Manman’s condition isn’t bad; encouraged by Jin Yan, she has become livelier. At this rate, they should be ready by March or April.”

Chen Ying didn’t ask what would happen to Jin Yan later; the protection center would surely come up with the best solution.

After ensuring the red pandas were alright, Chen Ying planned to go to town to buy some living supplies.

Just as he reached the foot of the mountain by car, he saw people gathered at the roadside, someone even shouting, “Pull it up and take a look.”

Chen Ying initially didn’t intend to intervene, but just then, a golden snub-nosed monkey jumped onto his car’s hood.

Chen Ying was startled, slamming on the brakes nearly flinging the monkey off.

Fortunately, the car was slow enough, and the monkey just wobbled before leaping onto the rooftop.

Chen Ying quickly got out of the car and noticed not just one monkey; several others were in the trees by the riverbank.

“They’ve pulled it up, pulled it up.”

The crowd parted, revealing two young men crawling out of the river, cradling a little monkey.

Chen Ying drew a sharp breath and hurried over.

“Excuse me, make way, I’m a veterinarian, let me see the situation.”

Hearing Chen Ying’s words, the spectators instantly made way, and Chen Ying rushed over, kneeling down to touch the little monkey on the ground.

Meanwhile, a larger monkey rushed over, trying to snatch the little one away.

“Don’t worry, let me see. It’s drowned. If you take it away now, it will die.”

Chen Ying, heedless of the danger, grabbed the monkey’s paw.

Fortunately, this was a golden snub-nosed monkey, relatively mild-mannered, and coupled with Chen Ying’s natural affinity, the monkey squeaked twice and then sat obediently by his side.

After some emergency aid, the little monkey coughed out a lot of water but finally came to.

Bystanders had called the town’s animal welfare department, and soon the staff arrived at the scene.

The animal welfare staff recognized Chen Ying and didn’t disturb his resuscitation of the little monkey.

Ten minutes later, the little monkey that had awakened was still a bit listless, but its condition was fairly good and it was already being tightly held in its mother’s embrace.

Seeing the monkeys leave the outskirts of the town, Chen Ying finally returned to her car to look for a parking spot.

When the monkeys had left, those two young men had already gone. Chen Ying asked the surrounding onlookers, but no one knew those two young men.

“I saw them coming from the town, and they didn’t speak the local language; they must be tourists from outside the region.”

Though their town wasn’t next to a famous scenic area, tourists had to pass through to reach the visiting area of the protection zone.

Some tourists enjoyed the simple small-town life and would stay to experience it.

The two wildlife protection workers said they’d inquire about the identities of those men after returning, as they deserved to be given at least an honorary certificate.

Walking out of the supermarket, carrying two large bags and heading toward the parking lot, Chen Ying heard someone nearby asking for directions to the mountain.

Chen Ying glanced over distractedly and saw a familiar tattoo pattern on one of the person’s forearms.

After thinking carefully, it appeared that the tattoo on the arm of the young man who had helped the little monkey earlier was similar.

Looking closer, there were two of them, outsiders with different dialects, young men; it all seemed to match up.

After placing her items on the car, Chen Ying went back to pick up some food, and the two young men were at the corner looking at a map on their mobile phone.

“Are you two the brothers who just jumped into the water to rescue the monkey?”

Chen Ying’s sudden question made the tattooed youth look up in surprise and then smile sheepishly.

“Yes, big brother, you were there just now too.”

“Are you guys alright? The water is quite cold in this weather. Have you changed clothes? Do you need to take some cold medicine as a precaution?”

“We’re fine, we’re both really fit.”

The other young man was more aloof, his suspicious eyes cautiously sizing up Chen Ying.

“I just passed by you and heard you asking for directions up the mountain. There’s no public access to the mountains here, just a narrow path that leads to the Protection Station. If you want to have fun on the mountain, you can go to the tourist area near the next town.”

“We’re not here for fun, we want to…” The younger man pursed his lips, seemingly embarrassed to continue.

The more aloof one suddenly spoke up, “We’ve come to seek guidance. Are you Mr. Chen, also known online as ‘Druid’ Mr. Chen?”

No way, they came all this way for him?

Chen fondly regarded the two of them, and considering their readiness to jump into the water to save the monkey without hesitation, she was willing to spend some time talking with them.

It’s good for young men to have enthusiasm, but impetuosity can’t be condoned.

They found a small restaurant, sat down, and ordered a few dishes at random, including a tael of medicinal liquor for the two to share.

“You two went into the water today, have some local medicinal liquor to warm up. Don’t drink too much—those who can drink finish this bit, those who can’t should just have a sip.”

She couldn’t drink since she had to drive, so she ordered the owner to prepare a pot of medicinal herb stewed yak meat soup.

“Have some soup. It’s added with medicinal herbs to warm your stomach and your body.”

The two young men didn’t hesitate; they downed the medicinal liquor in one gulp and then drank a bowl of hot soup, feeling warmer.

“Tell me, where are you guys from, and what brought you all the way here to find me?”

The tattooed youth looked at his companion, then took the initiative to explain.

“We’re from Jin Province, hometown and schoolmates, with a veterinary college education. But our school isn’t very prestigious, and the strength of our veterinary program isn’t particularly strong. After graduation, we opened a pet clinic and also joined a local animal rescue organization.”

At this point, he glanced at his aloof companion and bowed his head.

“I offended someone—people smashed our clinic and said they’d trash any place I tried to set up shop.”

The aloof young man was gazing at his own fingers, his voice tight.

“So you two came to find me; surely it’s not for me to help you open a pet clinic, right?”

“Of course not, we were thinking…”
