Chapter 257: Chapter 257: The First Flutters of Zhenzhen’s Request (1)_1
"What’s wrong?"
Looking at the woman’s pale, sickly face, Xiao Ruiyuan’s eyebrows furrowed, and he asked with concern, a deep worry flashing through his eyes.
"Oh, it’s nothing!" Mo Yan was startled and then lowered her head to hide the unusual feeling rising in her heart, "Sir Xiao, did you come all the way here for something?"
Xiao Ruiyuan looked at her, silent, his expression becoming colder.
In the nearly two months they had not met, the woman before him seemed to have suffered from a severe illness. Her already delicate frame appeared even more frail, and her tiny face more gaunt, making her eyes look disproportionately large. They lacked the confident luster of the past, her brows knit with deep sorrow.
What on earth could have tormented her so! Yet, detestably, she chose to be perfunctory in his presence, unwilling to speak the truth.
Thinking this, Xiao Ruiyuan clenched his fists, his aura chilling even more.
At this moment, he subconsciously disregarded the fact that they could not even be considered friends. How could a young lady’s troubles be spoken of so easily?
The gaze from above was too piercing, and Mo Yan could not ignore it even if she wanted to. She buried her head deep like a quail, completely puzzled as to what had displeased him this time, yet why did she feel so inexplicably guilty?
Luckily, everyone at home was busy with their own business, and there was no one else in the hall. Otherwise, the atmosphere would have been as awkward as it gets.
Xiao Ruiyuan watched Mo Yan coldly, noting how she didn’t even want to lift her head, clearly not wanting to see him, and a crack appeared in his icy demeanor.
Due to his upbringing, he had learned not to let his feelings show, but facing this woman who had a place in his heart, he felt a deep sense of helplessness and a fleeting inability to act.
Feeling the increasingly cold aura emanating from the other person, Mo Yan’s heart was on the verge of collapse. Dealing with someone so unpredictable was really suffocating!
But continuing this standoff was no solution. Gathering her courage, Mo Yan looked up at the person radiating a powerful presence and, embarrassingly enough, stammered, "Sir, Sir Xiao, please take a seat. I’ll go and make you a cup of tea!"
Saying this, without waiting for Xiao Ruiyuan’s response, Mo Yan dashed into the kitchen almost at the speed of flight.
Xiao Ruiyuan watched her flee in disarray, his expression briefly blank. Subconsciously, he touched his own face. Was it because he looked too scary?
Watching the teapot on the stove bubbling and steaming, Mo Yan slapped her face in annoyance. It was her own house, yet she had been frightened into the kitchen by a guest—how utterly embarrassing!
In the hall, Xiao Ruiyuan found a chair and sat down, his gaze unblinkingly fixed on the kitchen door. Just when he felt time dragging and an impatience stirred within him, it seemed as if something was scratching at his foot.
Looking down, Xiao Ruiyuan saw a furry, round little fat cat sprawled on his foot—a little tiger cub, no less!
Little Fur Ball had rushed in and spotted a stranger. Without a second thought, it began clawing at him, trying to drive the intruder away.
Xiao Ruiyuan extended two fingers, amused, and pinched the soft flesh on the scruff of Little Fur Ball’s neck.
Once its short legs left the ground, Little Fur Ball swung them wildly, emitting a threatening growl towards Xiao Ruiyuan. But it was still in its formative years, and the sound wasn’t the least bit intimidating; in fact, it was adorable to the ear.
Amused by the sight, Xiao Ruiyuan couldn’t resist pinching the little creature’s fluffy ears with his other hand. As the little guy’s cries became more exuberant, he smiled in pleasure, a low voice spilling from his lips, like the richest, aged wine.
