From the south to the north, entering Purple Capital City on the highway, just outside the Old Sixth Ring there’s a toll booth for the entry fee. It also serves as identity verification. Both Awakeners and ordinary people can enter. After paying, two large paper maps are received: one of Purple Capital City and one of Purple Capital Secret Realm.
The city map meticulously outlines various danger zones, official service stations, commercial streets, and other areas, while the Secret Realm map indicates the position of small towns in the rear. Additionally, one must sign a life and death statement, voluntarily entering Purple Capital City and accepting full responsibility for one’s own life.
Ye Nai paid and entered the city, slowly driving toward the east along the Sixth Ring road.
With a crack of the window open, a large number of spores flew out with the wind. What of the twenty-five danger zones? They are but rich food needed for the growth of spores and fungus.
According to the map, the infrastructure near the Sixth Ring road is still passable. Official organizations, military camps, and service companies are all built along this road. There are military police and teams or individuals who have accepted missions to sweep the road daily, preventing mutant flora and fauna from emerging and harming humans.
The closer one gets to the center, the worse the infrastructure becomes, ensuring only the basic amenities like streetlights and communication networks.
Starting from the Five Rings, all the way to the First Ring, are danger zone territories. The most central First Ring is precisely that towering Secret Realm.
Between the danger zones, official service stations and commercially-driven streets formed by the public are wedged in any available space. Miss one service station or commercial street where you can eat and sleep, and you’ll have to travel several kilometers to see the next one.
Ye Nai saw the first service station and parked his car on the roadside. He went in to get a takeaway meal and brought it back to his car: fifty yuan for three meat and two vegetable dishes with two bowls of rice. The meat was Mutant Beast Meat, cheap meat but expensive rice and vegetables, because growing vegetables, grains, and spices all require land. Mutant Beast Meat, on the other hand, is much easier to acquire.
A generous amount of meat was provided, but only a few vegetables. Fortunately, there was plenty of soup. With the meat soup mixed into his rice, Ye Nai gulped down bite after bite, though his mind was set on returning to the Secret Realm as soon as possible to expedite the growth of some vegetables.
After eating his fill, he continued on his way. He drove sporadically for a day until he entered the Five Rings.
The street environment immediately worsened. Aside from a road that was cleaned daily, on both sides lay the territories of the danger zones. A familiar stench filled the air, and large garbage trucks and weary Transporters could be seen on the roadside at all times.
Ye Nai drove until dark and, seeing no service station, simply turned off the car’s headlights and carefully drove to a dead spot. He then entered the East Ridge Secret Realm with his car to rest, doing a few hours of farm work before going to sleep.
The next day, before dawn in Purple Capital City, Ye Nai returned to the road and drove in the direction of the Secret Realm for an entire day. He occasionally encountered traffic jams; the streets were too narrow and with a heavy flow of both people and vehicles, traffic congestion had become the norm.
Entering the range of the First Ring meant approaching the outskirts of Town No. 1, under the dense shadow of the Secret Realm at the back of which stood the Grand Palace, its condition unknown. As Ye Nai drove past, he glanced at it, then steered with the flow of traffic, circling around and slowly approaching the entrance to the Secret Realm.
Before entering the Secret Realm, he sent a message to the siblings’ group, letting them know he had entered the Purple Capital Secret Realm, and his return date was uncertain. If there was anything urgent, they should leave a message.
Inside the Purple Capital Secret Realm, half forest and half desert, it represented a terrain that transitioned from a humid area to a semi-arid zone. After entering the Secret Realm, one must first pass through the semi-arid region to hunt in the forest, an expedition that, at the very least, takes three to four months.
The semi-arid zone might appear devoid of plants, but beneath the sandy ground lies an abundance of venomous creatures. It’s best to use mobile housing when camping. Tents are not at all safe, as the venomous creatures’ sharp mouthparts or large pincers can easily slice through man-made fabrics. Some even possess poisonous stingers, their lethality invisible to the naked eye.
Sturdy tents are certainly available, too, made entirely of tough Mutant Beast Skin—those are quite expensive; the money to buy one could easily buy several construction site trailers.
This semi-arid region is dotted with green oases large and small, which serve as water supply points on the way to forested areas, and the towns behind are built around these oases.
This is where a map of the Secret Realm comes in handy. There are no highways built here, so anyone can drive their vehicle in all directions. Without a map, newcomers would really struggle to find a water source in the vast desert.
Oases draw people, and human scents attract various poisonous creatures to prey upon them, making the area around an oasis very dangerous—sometimes just a casual walk can lead to a sand-hidden poison spike piercing through the sole of a shoe, ending one’s life.
Town No.2 is rather rudimentary too. Throughout her travels to various Secret Realms, Ye Nai found the Town No.2 in the Purple Capital Secret Realm one of the most basic she had seen.
It was a courtyard for living and working, made up of a few site trailers on a dry piece of land that didn’t grow a blade of grass, with Comms Soldiers running in and out of the Secret Realm relaying messages. Of course, all supplies were brought in from outside, and Ye Nai even saw a water supply truck.
She switched to an off-road vehicle in the Secret Realm and followed the map, traveling from oasis to oasis. At each oasis, she released spores to spread her influence, ensuring that the Secret Realm would quickly be covered in spores and the altars would be located.
To her surprise, this approach yielded the right results. Every altar she found was buried under the sand a few hundred meters away from an oasis, and quite deep too, exceeding ten meters. But no matter how deep they were buried, as long as the spores could burrow down, she could retrieve them.
These activities kept Ye Nai motivated, and she did not find her daily travels dull at all.
After nearly a month of traveling through eight or nine oases, she finally crossed the transition zone and entered the forest.
Once in the forest, she became more daring in her actions, relying on Space Teleportation to run around the forest, searching for altars and hunting simultaneously without any delay.
After collecting about thirty altars, Ye Nai finally established contact with the Purple Capital Secret Realm and in the next second, returned back to the East Ridge Secret Realm to wash up and intended to have a good three-day rest.
Of course, those three days weren’t just about lying around idly; farming tasks still needed to be done. The temperature in the East Ridge Secret Realm had almost risen back to a level suitable for sowing seeds. Whether anything would grow depended on this half year’s time.
She wasn’t expecting a large harvest, just enough to avoid a complete failure. As long as there was sprouting and a slight yield, it would prove that her agricultural theory was correct—that her spores could naturally grow into a special fungus in the soil, and planting could be performed in the Secret Realm, solving the food shortage issue.
In addition to letting crops grow naturally according to their own rhythm, Ye Nai reserved an acre of land for herself to rapidly produce various vegetables and fruits, built structures for plant vines to climb, gave them plenty of nutrients, and in three days, harvested several hundred pounds of each. She also replanted onions, ginger, and garlic, producing enough to last her several years.
This method of using fungi to promote plant growth yielded fruits and vegetables that ignored seasonal factors and didn’t need to worry about long-distance transportation. They were picked only when fully ripe, and they were delicious.
She had originally planned to rest for just three days, but due to various farming activities, she ended up staying a full week before returning to the Purple Capital Secret Realm.
