Wufu had lain in bed all day and felt that her bones had stiffened. Ignoring Ah Jiu’s advice for rest, she insisted on sneaking out with Hongyu to enjoy a variety of street foods, and even brought back a bag of fried wontons wrapped in oiled paper for Ah Jiu. Unfortunately, her gesture was not appreciated, and Ah Jiu wore a stern face throughout, leaving Wufu feeling rather sheepish.
Although Hongyu was petite, she was savvy and noticed why Ah Jiu was unhappy. However, seeing her mistress’s carefree demeanor, she did not offer any advice.
Two days later, as Wufu contemplated the return journey, Ah Jiu suddenly brought two girls, around the age of sixteen or seventeen, before Wufu.
"Eh, didn’t Xiao Li say you dislike having women wait on you? Why did you suddenly buy two?" Wufu curiously eyed the two tender-looking girls before her.
Both had their hair done up in maid’s styles, adorned with simple beaded flowers and cloves, each possessing a charmingly rosy complexion and white teeth, looking quite beautiful.
"They aren’t mine, they’re yours," Ah Jiu said, sipping her tea.
Wufu’s eyes widened, "Mine?"
The two maids promptly knelt before her and greeted in unison, "Your servants, Purple Jade (Jadeite), are honored to meet you, Miss." While speaking, they bowed their heads deeply three times.
Wufu was so startled that she couldn’t sidestep the gesture, just staring at the pair.
Neither maid rose from their knees without being told, they just knelt rigidly, eyes cast down, their serious demeanor rendered Wufu unable to mock them—she really couldn’t bring herself to laugh.
"You two, please stand up!" Wufu swallowed hard.
"Thank you, Miss." They both rose in unison and then stood aside synchronously, eyes and nose aligned, their movements so coordinated as if they had undergone some kind of training.
"Hongyu, take them down to have some tea," Wufu instructed, noticing their chapped lips.
Hongyu herself was dumbstruck for a moment before instinctively feeling that her own position was under threat. However, recalling the ordeal Wufu had recently been through, she said nothing and led the pair away.
"What are you up to?" Wufu immediately questioned Ah Jiu. "I don’t need more people around me."
"Are you sure?" Ah Jiu eyed her pointedly.
Wufu’s lips mumbled incoherently.
"I know your residence is well-staffed, but isn’t it just Hongyu and Liu Jin who are close to you? I am aware you wish to train them personally. But they are too young; it will take too long for them to grow up. Take this journey, for instance, you as a young lady couldn’t even prepare your wardrobe properly, which shows their inadequacy. A master should be able to handle grand affairs, but should you also have to instruct your servants on every small detail of daily life? Wouldn’t you find it tiring?"
Wufu opened her mouth but found herself unable to argue.
"You are a capable woman, I am aware of that, but I can also tell you don’t enjoy managing mundane household affairs. Therefore, you need reliable maids to act as your eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, to help you handle matters. All you need to do is protect them and provide their wages," Ah Jiu continued, "Miss Wufu, you are now a woman of some wealth, surely you can afford to keep them?"
Wufu glared, pursing her lips and said, "If I needed people, I could buy them myself."
Ah Jiu gave her a look that suggested she doubted Wufu’s judgment.
Wufu, in a huff, said, "You are so clever, so amazing, what great abilities do these Purple Jade and Jadeite have then?"
Her fur bristling like an indignant cat, Ah Jiu couldn’t help but smile and explained, "They are trained by my Secret Guard Camp, competent for tasks big and small, enough to ensure you can sleep and eat without worries."
Trained by the Secret Guard Camp, so they were Hidden Guards?
He had given her two Hidden Guards?
