Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 170: Bridging The Gap
Chapter 170: Bridging The Gap
Brooke had thought that when Thane returned home for dinner she would apologize to him right away and they would make up. Unfortunately, the moment she laid eyes on him, she could not find the right words to say at all.
The dinning room was set, with help from Hannah, who transformed it into a candle lit area, toning down the lights and even going as far as to play some background music.
Brooke inhaled sharply when Thane approached her, psyching herself to say something, anything at all.
"Mr-"
Thane interrupted her with a kiss to her forehead, or perhaps her voice was too low for him to hear. "I can’t stay long," he informed her, taking a seat, "I have urgent business to attend to."
Brooke forced a nod. She reached for her glass of water, she lifted it to her lips and tried to take a sip. However she rescinded the idea, and sharply turned to Thane.
"Am I no longer important to you?" she asked, stirring the pot.
Little did she expect him to casually answer, "You are the most important in my life Brooke." He said while picking up a fork.
Brooke’s ears flushed.
Why was he so good at leaving her speechless?
Cutting into his dinner he asked, "How was the meet and greet? Did you get along with the rest of your cast?"
Brooke balled her fists, "Can we not talk about other people tonight?"
Once more he calmly retorted, "What do you wish to talk about?"
Brooke noticed how Thane hadn’t once locked his gaze on her, which was strange because her husband would never pass by any opportunity to look at her.
A nervous line of sweat ran across her forehead.
She cleared her throat, "Our situation."
"What is our situation exactly?" he replied.
"It isn’t good." Brooke answered honestly.
"It isn’t bad either."
Brooke blinked twice, "You honestly think that?"
Thane sighed and dropped the knife in his hand, he straightened his back and poured himself some water into his glass.
"I won’t abandon our plans, we will get back at your disgusting ex and the rest of your family. You can also stay here for as long as you like, I won’t ever redistrict your spending and I’ll help you chase after your acting career with every single connection and resource I own." He explained in length, his eyes dancing around the room, avoiding her strictly.
He went on, "As far as our situation goes, I don’t believe that it’s a bad deal for you. We can just carry on like this."
Brooke didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Any woman would be happy with the arrangement Thane had placed in front of her.
’Come to think of it, this was exactly how we started, before any feelings got tangled in. I would be content, if we stayed this way, and maybe it would be for the best....’ Right in the middle of entertaining that thought, she noticed the veins running along Thane’s wrist.
She raised her gaze and noticed his clenched jaw and the slight furrow of his brows. His nonchalant tone had nearly fooled her into thinking he was okay with the arrangement.
’Of course he wouldn’t be fine with this. He’s in love with me.’ Her heart skipped a beat at the realization.
Thane cleared his throat, stealing her attention, he rose up picking up his phone, "I have to leave-"
"I’m sorry for making this complicated." Brooke chipped in, looking at the ceiling holding back her tears.
He nodded, "Goodnight Brooke, I’ll call you in the morning...."
She cut him off. "But I’m through doing that." She got up and slowly approached him. "I finally know what it is I want."
Thane raised a brow as to what she meant, in his head he was panicked. ’Is she finally going to say she wants me gone?’
In her husband’s mind, Brooke would break up with him because of how closely he smothered her with his weighing feelings.
Initially, before they met, he assumed that Brooke was still the spunky girl from his past, whom he admired for her strength and courage. He still couldn’t comprehend the shock he got when he met the timid Brooke, who couldn’t even look him in the eye.
She had become someone who disassociated whenever he initiated a deeper relationship.
Whenever he pushed their relationship forward, she pulled away, which was why he wanted nothing more than to give her space.
Because if she ended up telling him she didn’t want to be around him any longer...
He massaged his temples, "Brooke, I’m tired, I have work tomorrow-" he tried to stray but Brooke reached for his hand and gave it a tight squeeze.
"Thane." She called out to him in a low gentle voice.
She traced her gaze to his, and for a second they stood in complete silence, until she spoke again.
"I want to become someone you can lean on, when you need it the most." She stroked the back of his palm with her thumb, sending her warmth throughout his body.
The candle light illuminated the room dimly and the music in the background was drowned by Brooke’s words.
"Brooke, you’re already that and more to me." He confessed, taking her other hand in his. He took a step closer bridging whatever gap was between them, then rested his forehead against hers.
So close to each other, Brooke could hear Thane’s heart beating out of his chest, matching the rhythm of her racing heart. Her insides clenched tightly when his skin rested on hers, causing shivers to run up her spine.
She sniffled, "But more than that, I want to become someone who can love you unconditionally. Without my past making me wonder if I’m in over my head."
"I’m not holding you to any expectations Brooke, I won’t force my feelings on you-"
She shook her head, "They’re not forced, not when I feel this strongly about you too."
She confessed, her eyes watery and her vision turning blurry.
Thane’s hand snaked from her hand to her waist and pulled her in close, he leaned in but stopped barely an inch away from her lips. He looked at Brooke’s stunned face and bit his lip.
"We can’t go back if we take a step further from here, you understand that. I won’t be able to bear seeing you and not wanting to devour every inch of you." he confessed, laying his cards out.
Brooke in turn flung her arms over his neck, "I was hoping for just that." She got on her tiptoes and bridged the gap, planting her lips on his in a kiss...
