Chapter 166: Reverting To His Old Ways

Brooke was in the middle of going through her script when Thane came into their bedroom. She was so engrossed in the lines that she didn’t realize he had come in until he was directly behind her.

"When does filming start?" He asked, startling her.

Brooke sharply closed the book and looked over her shoulders at a weary looking Thane. "When did you come in?"

He stood up straight and began to take his clothes off. "Just now."

She dropped the script on the table and wheeled over to the bed, "Tomorrow, the script writers want to have a meeting with us just before the entire process starts former." She said, stealing glances at him whilst he took off his cufflinks.

"When is the meeting?"

"Seven pm, it’s at a restaurant." She told him, her fingers tracing circles around her stomach. She wanted to address the issue that happened at the Grayson Manor, but didn’t know how to bring it up.

"Oh, but I promise not to drink. I’ll be careful-"

"You are at liberty to do whatever you want Brooke, I don’t have any rights over your decisions." He said, as he circled over to the closet to take out what he would wear.

Brooke noticed him take out pairs of formal clothing and frowned. "Where are you taking those clothes to? Can I help-"

"I’m going to be busy with fine tuning the prosthetic, so for now I’ll be with my team." He said, his tone listless.

Brooke balled her fists. "You can’t do the work here?"

He shook his head, "Moving that much equipment would be too much of a hassle, and frankly not worth the extra effort. It’ll be more efficient to work where I always have."

Her eyes watered, ’This is the first time he’s considered doing something for me a hassle.’ She recalled how willing Thane was to do anything as long as it had something to do with her.

She clutched tightly onto her dress, psyching herself to say what was on her mind.

"Mr Grayson, I know that I was wrong, going over to your house without telling you was reckless. But if I didn’t do anything, Scott would’ve embarrassed-"

Thane sighed and looked over his shoulder, "You should get some rest, you have a big day tomorrow."

She frowned. "I want us to talk this out, I know I was wrong, but this...this is too much. You won’t even speak to me."

"We’re talking right now aren’t we?" He replied.

"Mr Grayson-"

Thane hissed, "Brooke, what exactly am I to you?" he asked all of a sudden.

Brooke blinked twice, "What do you mean?"

He dropped the clothes to the floor and charged towards her. Resting both hands on the sides of the wheelchair he stared her directly, giving her no room to escape him.

"You’re my wife, my partner, my first ever friend and the only person I trust. You know you’re everything to me, but tell me, what am I to you really?" he demanded.

Brooke forced a smile, "Mr Grayson you’re my partner too-"

He sighed, "I don’t think you even feel half of what I do towards you. If you did, Brooke, you would know how torturous it feels when the one you love takes off on their own to someplace dangerous without a moment’s notice." He said then waited to hear from her.

But Brooke couldn’t find the words to say in response. Thane waited patiently, hoping she’d day what he wanted her to, but when she looked away, unable to even look at him, he cracked an all knowing smile then turned around.

Adjusting his clothes, he said, "I’ll make sure your prosthetic is ready for use by tomorrow." Then he picked up his clothes and left the room.

On his way out, he took out his phone and dialed Gilbert’s number. However, in the process of doing so, a tear fell on the dial pad, he tried to wipe it off but more kept flowing on the screen.

"Shit." He cursed, when he realized that he was crying.

The pained look on Brooke’s face made his heart clench. He dashed for the elevator, his mind focused on getting away from the mansion at all cost. He got into the elevator and tried to call Gilbert, but he was intercepted by a call from Matthew.

He immediately wiped his tears, and answered the call, using his family drama to disrupt his mind from what had just happened.

As soon as the call connect Matthew said, "Thane, grandfather has frozen all my accounts. I need some money to get by, I’ll send you the account number for the new account I just opened."

Thane responded, "Where is Hannah?"

"She’s here."

"Place her on the phone. Now." He demanded. In less than a minute Hannah was on the other side, ready to hear from her boss.

"Master Grayson, I’m sorry for ghosting everyone, I didn’t-"

"Do you understand the nature of your employment, Hannah?" he cut her off, his tone harsh and unforgiving.

Hannah gasped when she heard his voice, to herself she thought, ’Why is he sounding like his old self?’ she panicked at the thought.

"I apologize, sir."

He kept a tight frown, "You are to monitor Brooke at every waking second, not run off with my brother and forget your duties."

"Forgive me sir, I was caught up in the moment-"

Thane cut her off. "I don’t need to hear your excuses. Find a way to get here before I make you suffer for your carelessness." He said then disconnected the call.

Immediately, Matthew followed up with the account number, but Thane deleted it on sight and then he blocked Matthew’s number.

He slipped his phone into his pocket, then marched furiously out of the elevator. On his way to his car, he jet Gilbert, who was already dressed in casual sleeping attire.

"Master Grayson, where are you headed to dressed so formally?" he asked, holding a can of soda.

Thane sent him a sharp glare. "Get the car ready."

Gilbert blinked twice, he looked at the huge black owl shaped clock over the elevator and frowned, "It’s nearly midnight. You shouldn’t stress your health and make your wife worry about you." He said then took a sip out of the can.

Thane frowned. "The only thing you should worry about is keeping this job."

Gilbert nearly spat out his soda. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand he forced a smile. "My job?" He had never heard Thane say a single thing about his job before.

Thane kept his icy tone, "Your family went bankrupt over a decade ago. You should be more aware that it was my hiring you that helped your situation."

Gilbert nodded, "And of course I’m always grateful for you helping me-"

Thane scoffed. He looked Gilbert from head to toe then said, "You don’t change out of your clothes until your boss is out of his. You don’t look me in the eye when I speak to you. You don’t go anywhere unless I give you the permission to. You do whatever I tell you to, even if it means selling your soul, you do it no questions asked. Had I been more firm, perhaps you wouldn’t have gotten ahead of yourself and assumed you could act as though we’re friends." He marched past him, towards the front entrance.

"Change and then get the car ready." Thane ordered.

Gilbert bowed his head, "Yes, sir."

He said, watching as Thane’s feet marched away from him.

Just as he left, the sound of the elevator’s ding drew his attention to Brooke, who wheeled out of the elevator and began to look here and there.

"Gilbert." She wheeled over. "Where is Mr Grayson, I have to speak to him and clear things up."

Gilbert shook his head, the realization of the situation kicking in. "Not tonight, Mrs Grayson."

"But I need to tell him-"

He crouched down and gently rested his hand on her shoulder. "If you go to him now, you’ll end up hearing something that you might never fully recover from."

Brooke frowned, "Gilbert what are you-"

"Forgive me, but I have to leave now." He said then dashed towards his room. On his way out he stole a glance at Brooke’s miserable face and let out a sigh.

"You are much too fragile to handle him tonight." He thought, imagining how Brooke’s already low self esteem would crumble if Thane were to ever revert back to his old ways in front of her.

"She wouldn’t be able to look past it." He concluded, trying to make sure that Thane wouldn’t say something to Brooke that he would regret for the rest of his life.
