Chapter 143: The Apple And The Tree

William frowned deeply when his cousin arrived, he more so couldn’t hide the disdain in his eyes when Thane said something to contradict his suggestion.

"Thane, you’re not making any sense. How can you accuse us of bullying your brother?" Amanda asked, forcing a smile. "We only came here to avenge our daughter."

But Thane ignored everyone else, he turned to Matthew, "Come with me." Then to Mallory he gave the same order, asking to speak to them both in private.

Vance tried to intervene, "Where are you taking my cousin to?" He asked, holding Mallory back by the wrist. "If you’re going to say anything, say it in front of us." He insisted.

Edward seconded the idea, "The girl has been through so much already, what is there to hide? Matthew made a mistake, and he should pay the price."

Rosalind rolled her eyes, "A mistake that has yet to be proven. Thane, you speak to them, after wards, whatever verdict you reach is what we’ll accept." She inputted.

On that note, Matthew and Mallory went along with Thane, towards one of the closest bedrooms, and had the door shut after them.

Sophia sneered, "I have never heard of having the family of the wrongdoer be a judge of character. Who the hell does Thane think he is?" she folded her arms across her chest.

Rosalind grinned from ear to ear, "You say that, but yet you couldn’t say a word in front of him just now."

Laura frowned, "Rosalind this is a very serious issue. How can you be so insensitive? Mother is only worried about Mallory." She scolded, getting on Rosalind’s nerves.

Sending the looming tension, Malcolm held his wife by the wrist and led her to the nearest seat.

"Let’s just sit here and wait to hear back from the kids." He suggested, quelling her anger.

In turn, Sophia sat down, eager to hear what Thane would say.

’Depending on what he says, his intentions will finally be revealed.’ She thought, her heart beating faster than it should from the anxiety of waiting.

William hissed and walked away, uninterested to see things through to the end.

Everyone stuck to their group, the Rosamunds together, Thane’s parents next to each other and Edwards faction occupying a part of the area. All waiting to hear the final decision made by the so-called heir to the family’s wealth.

Amanda stood up, "I can’t wait any longer-" Just as she said that, the door was opened, and out come the three, after thoroughly discussing.

Malcolm noticed the glare on Matthew’s face and feared for the worse.

"So, tell us! What have you decided?" Amanda asked first, "He’ll marry her, won’t he?"

Thane shook his head, "No, Matthew will not be marrying your daughter." He announced.

Sophia heaved a sigh of relief.

Vance stood up and pointed angrily, "Do the Grayson family have no honor? What about my cousin? Who will marry her?!"

Amanda retorted, "We won’t spare any of you, just wait. If my daughter doesn’t marry into the family, we’ll make all your lives hell."

Matthew sneered, "Marry who? I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I?"

Mallory ran over to her mother and sniffled, "Mother, I can’t marry him, not after what he’s done to me, it would be too painful!" she cried out, leaving everyone stunned.

Vance and Godfrey exchanged confused glances.

Amanda patted her head, "Dear, dear, you poor thing." She comforted her, although she had no idea what was happening.

Matthew laughed, "Who would marry someone like you? Used goods?! Give me a break!"

Laura widened her eyes, "Matthew?!"

"How dare you speak to her like this? Weren’t you raised any better?!" she spat out.

Rosalind scoffed, "My son has done nothing wrong. This Mallory girl is a chameleon, she can’t stick to one testimony, so who would believe her?"

Laura blinked twice, "She was scared, because your son intimidated her." She turned to Thane, "Why won’t you let them get married?! He should fix his mistake."

Uninterested, he responded, "Matthew has made his choice, forcing him will yield no benefit. And, Mallory is reluctant to marry someone who abused her. As it stands they are unsuitable."

Edward laughed, "See that? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. None of my sons would act this way and still gloat about it."

Malcolm sneered, "Your sons? Don’t make me laugh-"

Laura cut in, "My sons would never do anything to tarnish the family name. Unlike your son who constantly ruins our reputation. And rather than punishing him, you all applaud him for it. That’s why he’s turned out this way."

But Matthew wasn’t having it. "A lying bitch like her should consider her life over. No man will marry her, and no one will ever believe her."

Godfrey barked at Matthew, "You piece of scum! How dare you talk about my daughter that way!"

"It’s the truth. It’s our word against yours, who would trust the word of a daughter who came out of thin air, over the grandson of the Grayson family. Her life is ruined" he laughed cynically, over the sobs of Mallory.

Desmond sneered, "I always knew my cousin was a deadbeat, I was just waiting for you to show your true colors."

Sophia bit back her laugh. ’It’s a good thing Matthew is an idiot, and Thane is uninterested in the inheritance. This just makes things easier, and I didn’t even need to lift a finger.’

Malcolm turned to Godfrey, "You heard him, you and your family should leave, while we’re still being civil. Your daughter has nothing to do with us."

Laura gasped when she saw how terrified Mallory looked, watching the scene unfold, she couldn’t bare it.

"Wait!" Laura called out. "You can’t just leave, not like this, it isn’t fair. There has to be some sort of agreement we can reach."

"Mother is right. Even if one side of the family is an eyesore, it doesn’t mean we should let them tarnish our good name. Please, let us compensate you." Desmond replied, trying to curry favor with the Rosamunds.

Thane cleared his throat, "Don’t worry, we did come to a conclusion, one that I think will satisfy everyone."

Sophia’s ears stood up, she could sense something was amiss. "What solution..."

"Mallory has agreed to marry any other Grayson grandson, as long as it’s not Matthew." Thane announced, sending everyone on edge.
