Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 131: The Most Ruthless Way
Chapter 131: The Most Ruthless Way
After hearing about Maverick’s speculating, Brooke gasped at the realization of why he was telling this to her.
She turned to him, only to see his glare was not letting up. "Brooke, I want to ask you something, and depending on your answer, I may or may not side with you." He started off, making Brooke’s shoulder stiffen.
In a calm, yet intimidating tone he asked, "Why did you marry my cousin?"
She bit her lips, the agreement between her and Thane was something they were meant to keep between each other, she was unsure if even Hannah knew the exact details.
Was Maverick someone she could trust enough to tell?
And even if she decided not to speak, she feared he would paint her as the one who tried to kill Thane. She could just see it in his eyes that he suspected her of working for someone else, the one who wanted to kill Thane.
In plainer words he explained, "I may not understand why my cousin married you, but I wouldn’t put it past the family to be cautious enough to have someone spy on him. I find it hard to believe that he was left abroad with no one spying on his movements."
"That’s why I believe that someone in the family has already instigated you into swapping out his medicine. As the person closest to my cousin, you hold the most power and ease to finish him off without ever being suspected." Maverick said, pulling his sleeves down to his wrists.
"It wasn’t me." Brooke answered swiftly, "I was unconscious when he was rushed-"
"A rather convenient excuse. How coincidental is it? That the day you drag my cousin to that bar is the same day his medicine was tampered with." Maverick pinched his chin, eyeing Brooke from head to toe.
"In my opinion, you wanted to paint the sudden hiccup in his health as an aftermath of visiting the bar, covering up the change in drugs. And you conveniently passing out would lure any suspicion away from you. Am I right?"
"No! Why would I want to harm Mr Grayson?!" She spat out, disgusted at the mere thought of what he was insinuating.
"Then why did Thane come here? I know my cousin like the back of my palm, and I doubt he would willingly want to come back here. In fact, it’s been clawing on my mind why he’d show up out of the blue, without anyone’s knowledge and without his medication. Isn’t all this just too convenient?" He raised a brow at Brooke, wondering how she would respond.
’Now Brooke, tell me who it was that hired you to kill my cousin. Which of the family members will I have added leverage over? Edward? Sophia? Or could it be...’ his thoughts were interrupted when a call came through on his phone.
He picked it up from his seat and pressed it to his ear.
"I’m busy-"
"Doctor, the patient is out of his coma!" A voice rang from the phone.
"I’ll be there immediately! Just keep me posted." He announced, marching past Brooke, his eyes full of urgency.
Brooke who didn’t know what was happening had a rough idea. She grabbed him by the wrist, halting his steps.
"Let go-"
"Please, I want to see him, take me with you." she said.
"Why? So you can report his health status back to your employer?" he sneered.
Brooke held onto his wrist tighter, "I’m serious here, I want to see him, I’m worried about how he’s doing. And if you don’t trust me, then I’ll tell you all about why I’m doing this while we’re in the car."
Maverick’s ears stood, "You’ll tell me the truth?"
Brooke bit her lips, "Y-Yes, I will."
His friend smoothened into a smile, "Alright, you can come with, but make sure not to give me any reason to suspect you, or you’ll regret it."
Brooke released his hand, "Alright."
Brooke didn’t know just how influential Maverick was in the family, until when they were about leaving and encountered Sophia on the way.
"I thought you were hold not to leave the manor? Or are you just too thick skulled?" Sophia spat out, the moment she set her gaze on Brooke.
Laura who was behind her tried to pacify her, "Mother please-" but she was cut short by Maverick, who stood possessively in front of Brooke.
"Grandmother, what’s this? Are you trying to stop Thane’s wife from seeing him?" He asked, his tone gentle and polite.
Sophia scoffed, "What wife? This woman is just an opportunistic-"
Maverick inserted sharply, "Your granddaughter-in-law is not feeling well, so I’m having her examined at the hospital."
"We can have the medical staff at home treat her, isn’t that why we have them?" She inserted, staring daggers at Brooke.
"Well, they could, but I don’t think Thane would take it too kindly that you left his wife under the care of incompetent people." Maverick stated.
Laura frowned, "Incompetent? Maverick you should watch your tongue-" freewebnoveℓ.com
His gaze fixed on Sophia, Maverick said, "Not just Thane, but grandfather would be pissed if he heard how you were handling the family affairs. I mean, you had to call me over because you couldn’t handle aunt Cressida. If grandfather or her husband heard about that..." he sighed and made an empathetic face.
"I’m just looking after you grandmother, I wouldn’t want you to get scolded over such a trivial thing."
Sophia knitted her brows, "But Zachiel said-"
"If he says anything, tell him I was the one who took her out of the house. I’m sure there won’t be any problem if it’s me, will there?" He asked, his tone slow and imposing.
Brooke could tell that he was indirectly threatening Sophia, but she wasn’t sure about what, or why Sophia would even listen to him.
"Fine, you can take her, but please be careful. I don’t want anything about this reaching your grandfather or Thane’s ear." She said then took her leave, turning a blind eye to everything.
On their way out, Brooke asked, "How did you get her to agree?"
Maverick smiled and opened the door for her, he crouched down and offered to carry her inside the car. But Brooke refused, insisting she could get in by herself.
Maverick watched as she helped herself into the car, he was impressed, but moreso intrigued about this woman and her motives.
He turned around and got in the car, buckling his seat belt he responded, "Grandmother has always been easy to handle, you just have to hold some leverage over her and she’ll dance to any tune you play."
"Isn’t that a bit sadistic? She’s still your grandmother." Brooke pointed out.
Maverick couldn’t help but laugh at her response, "I can’t tell if you’re being cunning or sincere with me."
Brooke frowned. "What does that mean? I don’t know what you think of me, but I really do not have any ulterior motives about your family. That is not why I married Mr Grayson."
"Hmm," he stole a glance at her, "You definitely didn’t marry him for love, that much I’m sure of."
"How can you be so certain? Do we seem that out of place together?" She asked, referring to their stark difference in backgrounds.
But Maverick responded, "That’s because my cousin is already in love with someone else. So I’m wondering why he would marry another woman."
Brooke’s countenance fell, she hated hearing about this woman that everyone seemed to know about. The one who Mr Grayson was in love with, the one everyone expected to be his wife.
"So tell me Brooke, why are you and my obstinate cousin suddenly married?" He implored, making Brooke tensed.
There was something about the way Maverick interrogated her that made her feel uneasy.
"We share a common goal, so this is a marriage of convenience-" she was saying but he cut her off.
"If that were truly the case then my cousin would have had you guys have a fake marriage or at least sign a contract beforehand, but in your case I doubt he took any of such liberties. So enlighten me on why he would do this? And for a woman he recently met."
"How do you know that we recently met?" Brooke asked.
"You just confirmed it to me. The way you address him, it’s clear as day that you and him are not a real couple. So I’m dying to know, why is my aloof cousin infatuated with you?"
Brooke shook her head, "We’re helping each other to exact revenge. I have someone I want to take down, and he has someone he wants to pay, that is why we got married-"
But once more Maverick cut her off. "I see now that you’re the one dancing to my cousin’s tune. Brooke, I’ll say this once so listen carefully." He said, then made a sharp turn into the hospital’s reserved parking space.
"My cousin has no enemies-"
Brooke inserted, "I know, he’s such a kind man-"
"Oh no Brooke. My cousin doesn’t have enemies, not because he’s a kind man, but because he is so ruthless no one would dare to make an enemy out of him. He takes care of them, and in the most ruthless way imaginable." He informed her, meaning every word.
