Chapter 64: Guerilla Warfare 2

Naturally, Damon’s smile had long faded into a cold and heartless expression as a smear of blood marked his right cheek, his eyes slightly dull after the long killing. He had somehow come full circle, from going from reluctant to kill, to enjoying killing and now being numb to it.

What took other murderers years to undergo only happened to the young man in the span of a month and a half if one considered his initial slaughter at the Golden Savages Club. frёewebηovel.cѳm

He was not sure what to say anymore, and his hands were almost surgically steady every time he plunged his now extremely bloodied swords into hearts, throats, or any other available part of the body that could guarantee instant death.

The fact that after all this, he only had a splotch of blood on his face, was actually a miracle. Actually, it was not really a miracle per se, only that he used his Moonlight to induce freezing after stabbing a body, preventing blood from spurting out.

Given the sheer number of men he had taken down in this past set of hours, their blood, if allowed to leak freely, could form a river that would create a stench that could alert the others in the camp.

Of course, there is nothing perfect in the world.

By the time Damon methodically stabbed his sword into his 329th target for the night, he heard a sharp whistle as the alarm in the camp, which was a ringing bell, was sounded out, waking all the sleeping soldiers up once again.

This time, as their sleep was heavier than before, many woke up without even knowing where their right from their left was, their eyes bloodshot and their hands holding their weapons at crooked angles. They scanned about with panic on their faces, wondering what it could be this time.

Colonel Hastings, also strode out of his tent with a serious expression, the sleep beaten from his system as a nearby patrol scout came to report.

"Sir, we’ve discovered over a hundred dead bodies in the camp, all killed by an assassin!" The Scout reported with a salute and a fearful expression on his face, still not fully believing that his casual act of seeking out his ’relief’ partner in the tents for a quick night rendezvous would lead to such a harrying discovery.

Hearing this report, Colonel Hastings, as well as the officers in nearby tents who rushed over to understand what was happening, all had their expressions change to that of horror. They almost didn’t believe what they were hearing, but they had to when they saw that the moon that hung in the sky seemed to shine down upon their encampment.

Immediately, all of them felt their senses go dark, leading to a severe panic where they began flailing about to find some sort of leverage, most falling to the ground and staying there. It was a terrifying thing to lose one’s sight, hearing, and smell at the same time, with only one’s tactile sense remaining.

Unbeknownst to these panicking officers, Damon, after hearing the alarm, almost seemed relieved. His desire for power and vision for the future did not allow him to forgo the chance to accumulate Worldly Essence when it was right in front of him due to hardship or inconvenience, so he was fully intent on trudging along this tiresome path.

However, the alarm freed him of such burdens and allowed him to shift to his fallback plan, which was taking down the leadership of this reinforcement army in totality and scattering the remaining troops in order to fulfill the objectives of this instance.

To that end, he rose from his crouching position and identified the main tent as the alarms blared, charging forward at full acceleration, swinging his blade left and right as he passed by waking soldiers who rushed out of their tents.

Due to his doubled strength from the human base and especially the speed of his movement, rather than merely slice throats, Damon outright lopped them off, leaving their headless bodies to spurt blood like a damaged fountain as the corpses slowly collapsed.

When he reached the areas where the officers were, he activated the darkening aspect of the Silver Eclipse skill and then leaped onto the nearby tent before flipping downwards into the clearing in front of the lead tent where Colonel Hastings and his men lay sprawled, their expressions one of terror.

From Damon’s perspective, their eyes were bulging crazily as if they were desperate to see even a smidgen of light while they hyperventilated crazily due to panic. This gave him a new appreciation for the utility of this skill as he strode forward and ended their lives one by one with a casual stab to the brain, twisting the saber to make sure that they were dead.

When he got to Adjutant Morris, Damon’s face twisted as he realized that the man was bobbing pitifully after defecating and urinating on himself, curled up like an infant. He stood at a distance and condensed a dagger made of ice and hurled it out, piercing the man’s brain from afar.

Finally, Damon turned to Colonel Hastings, who was fighting to remain calm, controlling his heaving chest and remaining in a kneeling position with his hand on the ground, touching about to try and sense what was happening around him.

Damon’s eyes flashed with approval. This might sound a bit weird coming from him, but Damon felt that there truly was a reason why the British Empire had ruled the world for so long during that era.

He might give his ancestors a lot of flak, but given what they were facing at the time, they did not lose unjustly if the British had leaders like Sir Garnet and Colonel Hastings!

Damon raised his Energy Flintlock and aimed at the forehead of Colonel Hastings, charging the gun up. Despite being deprived of his senses, the man seemed to understand something and looked up, right into the muzzle of the gun, his expression grave.

He sighed weakly and seemed to lose the will to resist just as Damon fired, turning the respected Colonel into ashes that blew away with the wind. Damon did not utter any cringe or villainous words at this moment, not really thinking anything grand in his mind.

It was not really like he was doing anything great. This was just an Augmented Reality instance that took a snippet of his people’s past and he would truly have to be far gone down the path of madness to think any of these people were real.

Damon stomped the ground and released a wave of ice that covered most of the officer’s corpses before leaving the encampment in the other direction, killing any soldier who happened to come in his way.

By the time he broke out and rushed towards the area where he stashed his horse, Damon could already feel the world around him grinding down in terms of quality as the instance was coming to an end.

[Essence Augmented Reality (Earth) - Kumasi Fort Instance 1 (Clear!)]

[Objective(s):

a. Ensure that Yaa Asantewaa survives the siege and is not captured - Completion Grade: EX

b. Break through the fort and claim it - Completion Grade: EX

c. Ensure that at least half of the sieging Ashanti forces survive the encounter - Completion Grade: EX

d. Destroy the British reinforcements before they can assist Sir Hodgson - Completion Grade: EX]

[Remarks: Wow, another set of EX grade completions! Man, isn’t it so nice that some celestial being is out there intentionally tweaking the rules to your benefit, giving you easy to accomplish missions compared to what your peers are facing?]

[Rewards: 200 units of Worldly Essence, C-Grade Skill: Siege Breaker, C-Grade Skill: Reinforcements From Afar.]

As usual, Damon ignored the remarks that were clearly trying to solicit him into some kind of favorable perception of the Universe Will, which was impossible for him to garner. Rather, he was more interested in the two skills he had been awarded.

[Siege Breaker - Providence Based Skill]

[Rank: C || Stage: C]

[Effect: This skill allows the user to be able to penetrate the defenses of any fortified location perfectly with a variable chance of success upon an attack of sufficient power.]

[Reinforcements From Afar - Providence Based Skill]

[Rank: C || Stage: C]

[Effect: This skill allows the user to have a variable chance to turn any neutral combat capable force into allies upon designation.]

Damon’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He instantly understood that the Universe Will’s patience with him was running thin, just like how a woman could not expect to freeload an expensive meal each date without eventually being invited upstairs.

Two arguably useful skills that were locked behind the wall of ’Providence’. The Universe Will was urging him to invest in this stat to ’unlock’ these two skills and benefit greatly, and it was likely that it was expecting Damon to show some ’sincerity’ by investing his next stat point into Providence this time.

Otherwise, just like in the example above, once the forbearing male realized he was being used, he might become violent and dangerous. Likewise, Damon suspected that his ’nepotism’ under the Universe Will’s hands would quickly turn into adversity.
