72 -72: Drunkenness

Pan Shuiqin assured her, “Don’t be afraid, with sister here, I’ll block them for you, those guys with your brother-in-law won’t be able to make any trouble.”

Yang PeiMin didn’t believe it, Zhao ManCang, that fellow who seemed to love chaos, had already shown some hints on his face just now.

After a brief conversation, the feast outside was coming to an end.

As a newlywed who was on good terms with the hosting family, Pan Shuiqin couldn’t stay hidden and do nothing; she also went out to help.

Yang PeiMin, however, didn’t need to lift a finger today; she took advantage of the spare time to organize her belongings.

Her dowry, including clothing and such, had already been brought over yesterday when the sisters-in-law came to make the bed; it was now in the wardrobe.

There really wasn’t much, just a few sets of clothes and some homemade skincare products and medicinal pills.

Besides her clothes in the wardrobe, there were also Shen Yiguang’s, equally simple – two military uniforms, one overcoat, along with a couple of sweaters, some undershirts, and a few pairs of pants, and that was about it.

Then, she was pleasantly surprised to find wooden hangers in the wardrobe; these were not available in the Yang Family, where drying clothes was a simple task – just hanging them on bamboo poles was enough.

She didn’t bother; she directly hung the clothes on the hangers and placed them in the wardrobe.

She laid out the skincare products on the dressing table.

She also took out the basin, towels, and shoes and set them out; in the unfamiliar room, having some of her own things made it feel a bit more intimate.

Just as she was considering whether to readjust the position of the table and chairs, the door was pushed open again.

“Sister-in-law, gather up the chairs; Yiguang is drunk,” Zhao ManCang, along with another brother, helped Shen Yiguang in.

Hearing this, Yang PeiMin quickly moved the chairs blocking the path to one side, her face full of surprise, “How, how did he get like this?”

Looking at Shen Yiguang, placed on the kang, his cheeks flushed and eyes tightly closed, he seemed completely passed out, a strong scent of alcohol filling the air.

Yang PeiMin furrowed her brows, puzzled – wasn’t alcohol expensive these days?

How could he get so drunk?

Or was he not good at holding his liquor?

She really couldn’t stand taking care of drunkards.

In response to Yang PeiMin’s questioning, Zhao ManCang touched his nose somewhat sheepishly, “He was just too happy today and drank a couple of extra bowls; cousin, don’t take it to heart.”

“Sister-in-law, go get some water to wash his face,” followed closely by Shen Yixia’s instruction.

“We’ll leave this to you then; we’re taking off first,” Zhao ManCang, pulling the other brother with him, hurried off, as if fearing Yang PeiMin might hold him accountable.

Then, Chen Guizhi also brought in a bowl of honey water with concern, speaking to Shen Yixia, “Help your brother sit up; I heard that honey water can relieve drunkenness.”

Yang PeiMin, however, couldn’t find a towel, but she took a new one, poured some hot water into the new basin, wet the towel, and wiped Shen Yiguang’s face.

Just as Shen Yixia helped him sit up, Yang PeiMin, not quite making an effort, had to press down on his shoulders and wipe his face forcefully.

She disliked men who drank.

She believed that even if it couldn’t be avoided, they shouldn’t result in a state of drunkenness.

Shen Yiguang opened his eyes, propped himself up with one hand, rubbing his forehead with the other, looking quite uncomfortable, and refused the honey water brought by Chen Guizhi, “Mother, I don’t want this; just leave it there, I’m alright; I just need to lie down for a while.”

Seeing that his speech was relatively coherent, everyone let out a sigh of relief.

Chen Guizhi persuaded him a bit more, but seeing him shaking his head, she let it be.

“Alright then, I’ll leave it here, and let your daughter-in-law wipe your face.

Lie down for a bit, and don’t go outside; we’re out there.”

Shen Yixia also let go and said to Yang PeiMin, “Sister-in-law, I’ll leave this to you; keep an eye on him, check if his clothes are wet, and change them if they are.

Let him lie down for a while, and call us if there’s anything.”

Yang PeiMin nodded.

After they left,

the drunk fellow surprisingly leaped up, swiftly got off the bed, and nimbly secured the doors and windows.

Yang PeiMin stood there, dumbfounded!

“You aren’t drunk?

You were pretending?”

Shen Yiguang winked at her, “If I didn’t pretend to be drunk, would they leave us alone in the bridal chamber?”

Right.

Yang PeiMin’s eyes sparkled as she glanced at him, “I’ll give you that, you’re quick-witted.”

Shen Yiguang sat down at the table and twisted a towel, wiping his face, “You almost rubbed off my nose when you wiped my face earlier!”

She blushed, “How was I supposed to know you were pretending?”

Shen Yiguang explained to her, “I’m not drunk, but they sure did pour me plenty.” He shook his head, laughing, “And they have the audacity to act like matchmakers, quite the eyesore.”

Yang PeiMin raised her eyebrows at him; aren’t they?

“You should know that our matchmaker wasn’t them, it was…”

“No need to say it.” Yang PeiMin was dejected, knowing that relative was from her own family…

“You should hurry up and drink the honey water your mother brought in.” She picked up the honey water and handed it to him, “Even though you’re not drunk, there’s still a smell of alcohol.”

Shen Yiguang took it reluctantly and drank it down.

Then he stood up, his gaze deep and shadowy, “MinMin, let’s get some sleep.

The guests outside haven’t left yet.

Pretending to be drunk gives me the perfect excuse not to deal with them.”

Yang PeiMin didn’t know if it was the thought of those ‘unmentionables’ that made her cheeks flare up with redness, and her ears felt hot.

She looked away, avoiding his gaze like she was escaping from something, “You sleep, I’m not tired.”

Shen Yiguang’s voice was enchanting as he took her hand, “Let’s just nap for a bit, and we’ll get up after the guests leave.

You didn’t sleep well last night either, did you?

I was so excited that I didn’t sleep at all; now, I’m incredibly tired.”

Yang PeiMin couldn’t help but glance at him, indeed spotting the faint bluish marks under his eyes that were hard to notice unless looked closely.

She didn’t know if she had any herself; she had sported two dark circles that morning, but after applying some potato slices, they had mostly faded.

Just as he said, and with her usual habit of napping at noon, she was indeed feeling sleepy.

She sat on the edge of the bed, making room for him, “You sleep on the inside.”

Shen Yiguang nodded and climbed onto the bed, then proceeded to take off his outer clothing.

Yang PeiMin was somewhat flustered, and Shen Yiguang turned back to her, “It’s not comfortable to sleep in too many clothes, and the outer clothes are dusty.”

But she saw that he took off not just his coat but his pants as well, and she quickly turned away, “What are you doing?”

Shen Yiguang let out a light laugh, “I’ve still got thin cotton pants on, it’s okay to look.”

Yang PeiMin didn’t want to deal with him at all.

She picked up another blanket from inside and lay down next to the edge of the bed, her back to him.

“MinMin, can you sleep comfortably in your clothes?”

“I like it this way.”

“MinMin, shall we share a blanket?”

“No, thanks, I’m used to having my own blanket.”

“MinMin, we need to get used to sharing for two.” Shen Yiguang wriggled into her blanket as he spoke.

“You…”

“MinMin, don’t move, we’ll just sleep, nothing more.”
