Chapter 54: Ch-54: Honoured One?

The docks of Thunderhead Isle rose like jagged teeth from the sea, their black stone piers slick with salt and shadow.

Thunder cracked faintly overhead, distant but constant—like a storm forever trapped beyond the horizon. As the Azure Wind slid into port, the tension on board remained palpable.

Tian Shen stepped onto the damp stone, his boots meeting solid ground for the first time in days.

Little Mei darted ahead, sniffing curiously at the air, ears twitching. Feng Yin followed, her eyes wary, a fresh talisman already primed in her sleeve.

Above them, ancient cliffs loomed—webbed with narrow paths and strange overgrowth.

Black trees twisted toward the sky, their leaves glimmering with faint bioluminescence. Thunderhead Isle was no ordinary landmass. It was a relic of the old world, a place steeped in rumors and forgotten power.

Captain Luo disembarked behind them, exchanging hurried words with the harbor master.

The silver-haired envoy and her companions had already vanished into the mist, moving with quiet purpose into the heart of the island.

"We shouldn’t linger here longer than necessary," Feng Yin said, her voice low.

"This place... it hums with spiritual pressure. Old pressure."

Tian Shen nodded.

"It feels like the earth itself is holding its breath."

From within his robe, the map pulsed again—its faint glow barely visible.

But Tian Shen felt it more than saw it: a tug, like a thread wrapping around his heart, guiding him toward something hidden beneath the isle.

They followed the envoy’s trail toward Dragonstone Port proper. The settlement was small, more fortress than city.

Blackstone walls rose around a sprawl of tiered buildings carved into the cliffs. Cultivators milled through narrow streets—some clad in merchant robes, others armored and alert.

Everyone here walked with caution, as if the very shadows watched.

"We should check in at the local sect outpost," Feng Yin suggested. "Let them know we survived the attack."

Tian Shen hesitated, fingers brushing the edge of the map in his ring.

"You go ahead. I want to scout the area a bit... see if anything resonates with this thing."

Feng Yin studied him a moment, then nodded.

"Be careful."

"I will. Take Little Mei with you."

But Little Mei immediately climbed up Tian Shen’s back and settled on his shoulder, her tail wrapped protectively around his neck.

"She says she’s staying," he said, chuckling softly.

"Guess I don’t have a choice."

Feng Yin rolled her eyes and turned away.

"Of course not. Just don’t do anything stupid."

Tian Shen watched her disappear into the crowd, then turned toward the cliffs.

The tug on his instinct pulled him northeast—toward a path winding up the outer edge of the island.

He followed it in silence, feet crunching against moss and stone. As he climbed, the air grew heavier, more saturated with Qi.

Old wards lined the trail—half-eroded glyphs etched into stone pillars, pulsing with faint energy.

Then, at the crest of the path, he saw it.

A ruined shrine, half-swallowed by forest. Its roof had collapsed, ivy crept across its walls, and the statues out front had eroded into faceless sentinels.

Yet the moment he stepped near, the map in his ring flared—bright and urgent.

He pulled it free.

The script across the hide shimmered, then shifted. The crescent-moon shape now glowed entirely, and a new line extended from its edge—pointing straight down.

"A hidden chamber," Tian Shen whispered.

Little Mei perked up, eyes narrowing. She padded ahead and sniffed at a cracked stone slab near the shrine’s base.

Then, with a surprisingly strong swipe of her paw, she pushed aside the debris—revealing a narrow staircase spiraling into the dark.

"Guess we’re doing this," he muttered.

They descended.

The air below grew cold, thick with stagnant energy. The steps led into a long corridor, its walls inscribed with faded murals—depictions of massive beasts, grand wars, and a figure cloaked in lightning wielding a map.

Tian Shen’s heart pounded.

"These symbols... they match the ones on the hide."

At the corridor’s end stood a circular chamber, domed and lined with more of the strange writing.

In its center floated a crystal pedestal, upon which rested a single stone tablet.

Tian Shen stepped forward.

『Warning: High Danger Level Detected.』

The system’s warning flickered across his vision. His breath caught.

He placed the map against the tablet.

For a moment—nothing.

Then, the tablet flared with light. The chamber shuddered. Symbols lit across the walls, forming a rotating formation of stars and realms. And in the center, a projection formed—a man in flowing robes with eyes like burning galaxies.

"You who holds the map," the echoing voice intoned, "bear the burden of the Last ’Honoured One’."

[A/N: I Ain’t hinting at anything, i swear!! ;)]

Little Mei hissed, fur rising.

The figure continued.

"The war has not ended. Only silence remains. The paths once broken must be reconnected. The Relic Maps were scattered—not to be used, but to be earned."

Tian Shen tried to speak, but no words formed. The illusion locked eyes with him.

"You are young. Weak. Yet chosen. Prove your worth, and the first gate shall open."

The chamber darkened. A pulse of spiritual energy surged outward, slamming into Tian Shen’s chest.

[Challenge Initiated: Honoured’s Trial – Phase One]

[Objective: Endure the Torrent. Survive 120 spiritual assaults.]

Tian Shen staggered back. The air thickened as spears of energy shot toward him, conjured from runes above.

He gritted his teeth, body already moving on instinct.

The first spear struck his shoulder—burning, but not lethal.

He pivoted, dodged the second, deflected the third with a burst of Qi.

Mei leapt to a ledge and yipped anxiously.

"Kyuuu~!"

’Master!’

"Can’t stop now," Tian Shen growled.

The strikes came faster, forming patterns—testing reflexes, resolve, adaptability.

His breath grew ragged. Sweat soaked his robes. Every muscle screamed.

At the 80th strike, his knees buckled. The 81st broke through a Talisman barrier. freёweɓnovel.com

He rolled, crashing against a pillar. Blood trickled from his brow.

"If you wanted to grow stronger," he whispered to himself. "Then take it."

He roared, channeling everything into a single pulse.

His body surged forward again, with newfound will.

Strike 100.

Strike 110.

Strike—

A final burst of light flooded the chamber, blinding.

Then silence.

Tian Shen collapsed, gasping.

[Trial Complete. Honoured’s Gate Unlocked.]

The pedestal split open. From within rose a crystalline orb, swirling with blue light.

『Item Acquired: Honoured One’s Memory Fragment (1/5)』

Little Mei scrambled to his side, nuzzling his cheek.

"I’m fine," he rasped. "Mostly."

He stood, wobbling slightly. The chamber began to dim, the runes fading.

But the orb pulsed one last time, through which, an attribute orb dropped, which he swiftly absorbed.

『New Elemental Attribute Acquired: Space (Locked)』

『Condition to Unlock: Acquire the Remaining Memory Fragments and combine them.』

Tian Shen stared at the orb, then back at the map in his hand.

This wasn’t just some rare item. It was a path. A legacy.

And someone wanted it buried.

As he ascended the steps back to the surface, dawn had already passed. The sun hung high, but the storm clouds of Thunderhead loomed as ever. He stepped into the light, blinking.

Waiting at the shrine’s edge was Feng Yin—arms crossed, expression tight.

"I told you not to do anything stupid."

Tian Shen grinned through blood and bruises.

"I said I’d be careful. I never said I wouldn’t be reckless."

She huffed, stepping forward to support him.

"What the hell happened?"

"I think I... became an Honoured one?"

Tian Shen explained the happenings to her and mused, while Feng Yin just stared at him.

Then, quietly: "We really don’t get to have a normal journey, do we?"

He shook his head. "Not when destiny’s tagging along."

Feng Yin looked at Tian Shen’s battered form and sighed.

She gently placed a supportive arm beneath his, helping him down the mossy steps of the shrine.

"You’re reckless," she muttered.

"And you’re beautiful when you’re mad," Tian Shen replied, a crooked grin forming despite the pain.

She paused.

"Don’t flirt with blood running down your face."

He chuckled, coughing once.

"That’s when I flirt the best."

Behind them, Little Mei leapt between the trees. Though small, she exuded quiet tension, as if sensing the shrine’s secrets had stirred something more dangerous.

As they reached the forest’s edge, Tian Shen stopped. He looked back at the shrine, now half-hidden in mist.

"That trial... it wasn’t just a test. It felt like a warning."

"A warning from who?"

Feng Yin asked.

"I don’t know. But the voice... the figure... it knew I wasn’t ready. Yet it still gave me the key."

He pulled out the crystal orb again. It hovered an inch above his palm, spinning slowly.

Even without input from the system, Tian Shen could feel it calling—toward something far away.

"There’s more to this Honoured One legacy than just the map."

He said.

"It’s tied to something bigger."

Feng Yin crossed her arms. "You think this is connected to the Central Region?"

He nodded slowly.

"Yeah. I think someone—or something—is trying to restore a path that was deliberately broken."

She fell silent for a while then muttered.

"Then we can’t waste time. Whatever this legacy is... it’s not just yours anymore. It’s tied to our survival."

Tian Shen turned to her, surprised. Her eyes met his, calm and unwavering.

"We’re Dao Companions," She said softly.

"If you fall, i will fall with you. And I... I won’t let that happen."
