COTE : There is Something Wrong With Hikigaya-Chapter 175: Class B Can’t Keep Secrets
Chapter 175 - 175: Class B Can’t Keep Secrets
On the third day of the uninhabited island exam, Hikigaya was once again assigned to an exploration task. He first went to the beach, and just as expected, there was no trace of Class C's students anymore.
After thinking for a moment, he decided to check on Class B's camp. As he approached, the students quickly noticed him. Before long, Kanzaki came out, but Ichinose was nowhere to be seen.
It seemed like Ichinose was out, leaving Kanzaki in charge of the camp. Kanzaki welcomed Hikigaya inside, and noticing the puzzled look on Hikigaya's face, he sighed.
"Ichinose said you're someone we can trust."
With that, Kanzaki gave Hikigaya a strange look. Hikigaya could tell what he meant and awkwardly scratched his head.
"Me? Trustworthy?"
"I'd like to know that too."
Kanzaki replied with a flat tone.
Hikigaya chose to ignore it and got straight to the point.
"Kanzaki, I heard you took in a Class C student named Kaneda. Is that true?"
Kanzaki nodded and explained that Kaneda had gone out with some other students to gather wild fruit. But when Kaneda was mentioned, Kanzaki's face showed a trace of concern.
It was clear that he wasn't entirely comfortable with Ichinose's decision—just like how Class D had been wary of Ibuki at first, suspecting she might be a spy.
"But I also heard that all of Class C has retreated. I don't know if Ryuen really gave up or if he's planning something else."
It was obvious Kanzaki didn't trust Ryuen at all.
Hikigaya then asked a few more questions about Kaneda's behavior, but Kanzaki reassured him that Kaneda hadn't done anything suspicious and was acting perfectly normal. That was precisely why Ichinose and the others had lowered their guard. However, the more obedient Kaneda was, the more Kanzaki found it suspicious.
"You! What are you doing in our camp?"
A sudden voice, filled with displeasure, interrupted their conversation.
Hikigaya turned to see Shiranami Chihiro staring at him with a tense expression.
"This time, I won't let you bully Honami-chan again!"
Hikigaya's face darkened instantly. He glanced at Kanzaki, who also looked confused and frowned.
"Shiranami, stop this nonsense. And have you finished your tasks?"
"I—I finished them!"
Shiranami Chihiro replied confidently, completely missing the part where Kanzaki was trying to dismiss her.
The moment Hikigaya had stepped into Class B's camp, he had already noticed a pair of eyes watching him the whole time. He quickly realized it was the same girl from before—Shiranami Chihiro.
He just hadn't expected her to hold a grudge for this long.
Now, he was stuck in a very awkward situation.
Kanzaki looked at Shiranami with a headache, his tone growing firmer.
"Shiranami, did you forget what Ichinose told you?"
Shiranami flinched, especially at the mention of Ichinose's name. She nervously looked around but still refused to back down.
"I just remembered I have something else to do. I'll be going now."
Hikigaya knew it was best to leave, so he got up and left the camp.
After his figure disappeared, Kanzaki turned back to Shiranami with a serious expression.
Shiranami Chihiro, who had been so stubborn earlier, now looked like a child who had done something wrong, staring at the ground.
"Sorry, Kanzaki-kun."
She apologized before he could even say anything.
Kanzaki sighed and rubbed his forehead in frustration.
"Shiranami, do you realize you almost exposed something just now?"
"I... I just acted on impulse! That guy Hikigaya is so annoying. Last time, he even made Honami-chan cry!"
Shiranami Chihiro pouted in frustration.
"You know that's not what I'm talking about! We can't underestimate Hikigaya. And right now, you're carrying the responsibility of all the students in Class B. Ichinose might not be strict with you, but I hope you understand the weight of your role. Don't let her down."
Kanzaki gave Shiranami Chihiro a serious warning. Hearing this, she bit her lip and lowered her head.
"S-Sorry."
"By the way, what did you mean just now when you said Hikigaya made Ichinose cry?"
Kanzaki suddenly asked.
"It was after the surveillance incident..."
Shiranami Chihiro explained everything that had happened.
After listening, Kanzaki fell into a long silence. He unconsciously glanced in the direction Hikigaya had just left, lost in thought.
...
After leaving Class B's camp, Hikigaya replayed Kanzaki's unusual reaction in his mind. Kanzaki had hidden it well, but he still caught that brief moment of nervousness when Shiranami Chihiro stepped out.
Kanzaki wasn't the type to show emotions easily. And yet, his attitude toward Shiranami Chihiro just now had been rather odd—almost as if he was eager to get rid of her.
Why?
There was only one likely explanation.
"Whether it's Ichinose or Kanzaki, they stand out too much. Shibata is the same. If I had to pick someone who's both inconspicuous and trustworthy..."
Hikigaya's expression turned strange.
If he really guessed it that easily, then Class B's so-called 'secrecy' was laughable.
When he returned to Class D's camp, he noticed that Ibuki was already back. Looking around, he saw that there weren't many Class D students around. After thinking for a moment, he walked over and sat next to her.
Ibuki froze for a brief moment, a flash of panic appearing in her eyes before she quickly masked it with a look of annoyance.
"What do you want?"
"Just checking in on the poor soul abandoned by Ryuen."
"You!!!"
Ibuki's anger flared instantly, and she glared at Hikigaya.
"That's strange. You're not Ryuen's lackey, so why did you two fall out?"
Ibuki let out a cold scoff.
"Let me make one thing clear—I'm not anyone's lackey, and definitely not Ryuen's. We just happened to have the same goal: getting to Class A. That's all."
"So that's why you had a fight with him? He spent points recklessly, you called him out on it, he beat you up, and then kicked you out."
Hikigaya said it like it was the most natural conclusion.
"Exactly, I—"
Ibuki stopped mid-sentence, her expression stiffening.
Because Hikigaya had just repeated the exact excuse she had planned to use.
Was it just a coincidence... or something else?
