Chapter 37: Something Dangerous

Caleb’s eyes snapped open instantly, all the hairs on his body standing tall.

He dived straight out of his bed, his eyes flickering around to check for the threat.

But even before he could catch sight of anything, a figure blurred past him and a loud sound was heard.

BOOM!

The figure crashed straight into the wall with intense force.

Caleb quickly turned on the lights with the automatic remote.

He could see Julia standing not too far from him, and on the opposite side... a face that instantly made a frown stretch over his face.

Julia had a frown on her face as well as she looked at the figure.

"What do you want?! Why are you here?!" she questioned, her voice simmering with anger underneath.

The figure slowly stood, hand clutched to his stomach.

It looked at Julia and then turned his head to Caleb.

"I’m not here for you... X protocol has been breached. Threat has to be eliminated," Nathan said, his eyes locked onto Caleb, not even shifting for a second.

"I didn’t breach any protocol! Leave me and my family out of this!" Julia shouted, visible frustration in her voice.

Her smile from earlier had totally disappeared. Right now, she was like a tigress ready to bite.

A dark... almost sinister laughter came from Nathan.

"Protocol wasn’t breached by you... He knows," Nathan replied, a wicked grin appearing on his face as he looked toward Caleb.

Caleb flinched before those eyes.

There was something totally off about this Nathan.

Something that he couldn’t tell but could feel.

’This isn’t Nathan,’ he thought to himself as he looked at the figure in front of him.

They looked the same, they talked the same... but those eyes told differently. free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Caleb, what’s it talking about?! Caleb, what did you know? Please don’t tell me—" Julia asked, her voice cracked with panic.

Her heart racing with every passing second.

’Was that the reason why he suddenly decided to join Dad’s stupid quest?’

It was making more sense to her, but her eyes flickered with hope as she waited for his answer.

Caleb drew a long sigh.

"No, I’m not a cardholder..."

Julia let out a sigh of relief.

But her eyes widened as she realized.

"How do you know about cardholders?!" Her panic returned.

Why did her brother have to get involved in all the mess?

"A friend," Caleb replied flatly. No point hiding it now.

A cold laughter escaped from the side.

"At least you know why I’m here now," the fake Nathan drew out a dagger, its sharp edges glinting under the light of the room.

Julia’s gaze shifted to him.

’Questions will come later. I’ll have to deal with that thing first,’ she thought to herself, her eyes locked on target.

"X will eliminate the threat... That is the mission," the figure said, voice flat—like it didn’t care who Caleb was. Only that he had to die.

Before Caleb could blink, the figure was gone—vanished like a shadow into the tall mirror.

Then—

Shhrrk!

From the silver edge of the bed, just inches from Caleb, a hand shot out fast—too fast—holding a dagger aimed straight for his throat.

"Caleb! Watch out!" Julia screamed.

She was already shifting, her body crumbling into black mist.

Caleb’s body moved before he could think.

He jerked his head to the side, the blade just grazing him.

Pain flared at his neck.

Warm blood slipped down his skin.

Too close.

Then came the rest of the figure—pouring out of the mirror edge like liquid metal, reshaping into the same body, the same killer, eyes cold and locked on him.

Caleb stumbled back—but Julia was faster.

She exploded out of the mist behind the attacker and grabbed his wrist mid-swing. With a sharp twist, she knocked the dagger loose—metal clattering to the floor.

Then she swung her other hand forward, a punch straight to his face.

But the figure raised his arm just in time, blocking it.

Julia didn’t stop.

Her leg came sweeping low, crashing into the back of his ankle. It was quick and dirty—he fell hard with a grunt, hitting the floor.

She was on him in a heartbeat—straddling his chest, one knee pressed down to hold him in place. One hand pinning his wrist, the other locking his arm tight.

He struggled, but she had him trapped.

The room was dead silent, except for Caleb’s heartbeat thundering in his ears and the slow drip of blood from his neck.

It all happened in seconds.

"I’m surprised how strong you are." Nathan could barely speak in that position.

But he didn’t look like someone who had lost either.

A calm and unfazed expression remained on his face.

Julia could tell something was off.

And Caleb confirmed it... Out of nowhere, a fireball sparked to life, just right behind her.

"Julia!" He dashed straight for her, pushing her straight out of the way.

A fireball whisked past him, missing them both by a hair’s breadth.

That slight moment of disorientation was enough.

Before they could both turn their backs, he was already standing.

Holding onto the dagger that was smeared with Caleb’s blood.

"I won’t let you kill him!" Julia declared, finally pulling out her card.

The black and golden card that carried an air of power and authority.

But more than anything, what stood out were the brightly glowing crowns drawn on the surface of the card.

Three crowns that shone with brightness that made it look as though they were real—alive.

"Do you really think you can fight me off with the power that we gave you?" it asked with an amused smile on its face.

But Julia didn’t reply. She stood, her eyes beaming with defiance.

She wasn’t going to watch her brother die in front of her—not today, not ever.

Even if it meant losing her own life.

Just as it came forward, ready to go for another round...

It suddenly stopped in its tracks.

It looked at the blade with Caleb’s blood as though contemplating something.

Then it turned to the brother and sister duo.

"I have to eliminate the threat... The true dream grows weaker," it said, disappearing straight into the mirror.

It ended, but the two siblings both knew that this was only the beginning.
