Chapter 443 - 443: Monster Attack at Yukinoshita Residence...
Yukinoshita Residence – Nighttime
As usual, the Yukinoshita household was quiet. Being an upper-class family, they naturally had strict rules, one of which was "lights out" at a certain time. This applied to both Haruno and Mrs. Yukinoshita. But tonight was anything but peaceful.
Not long after she fell asleep, Mrs. Yukinoshita suddenly sensed a flash of light. She frowned slightly and opened her eyes. The overhead light was on.
"Huh?"
She felt puzzled. She clearly remembered switching off her bedroom light before going to bed.
"Did I forget to turn it off?"
Thinking she might have simply forgotten, Mrs. Yukinoshita lifted the covers and got out of bed, planning to turn the light off again. But the moment her foot touched her slippers—
Click.
The light went out!
"!!!"
The sudden darkness made her heart skip a beat.
"Huu..."
She took a moment to catch her breath.
"Is there a problem with the electricity?"
She fumbled for the phone on her nightstand and turned on its flashlight. A pale glow lit the room, but it brought her no comfort. Instead, there was a strange chill in the air.
"Huh..."
Amid the darkness, she could hear faint gusts of wind. Aiming the flashlight toward the bedroom window, she saw that the curtains were shifting slightly. Through a gap, it was clear the window, which should have been closed, was now wide open.
She gave a wry smile.
"Am I getting old? My memory's really getting unreliable."
She didn't think too much of it, assuming she had just forgotten to lock the window. Phone in hand, she walked over to the curtains, intending to shut the window.
Then, from the corner of her eye, she glimpsed something. Narrowing her focus, she realized there was a pair of blood-red eyes staring right at her outside the window.
Mrs. Yukinoshita's pupils widened in shock. The flashlight revealed two glowing orbs, each as large as a paper lantern, fixated on her. They belonged to some creature with an enormous maw and razor-sharp talons, clinging to the wall outside.
"Aaaah!!!"
It screeched, a piercing cry.
"Aaah!"
Even someone as composed as Mrs. Yukinoshita screamed, stumbling backward and losing her balance. She hit the floor hard.
"Mother?!"
Hearing the scream from the adjacent room, Haruno rushed over. Click. As she entered, she flipped the switch near the door, turning on the light.
What she saw was her mother sitting on the floor, terror in her eyes, staring at the open window.
"Mother, what happened?"
Haruno asked in confusion, stepping forward to help her mother up.
Clack.
A sharp noise caught her attention. She looked up. A claw was gripping the balcony window. Before she could react—
Crack.
Another claw appeared. Next, a creature she had never laid eyes on—a being larger than a grown man, part bird and part human, sporting feathered wings—slowly came into view.
"Gaaah!!!"
The bird-man monster howled. Boom! It jammed its head through the window, trying to force its way inside, but the wide wings got stuck.
"Gah gah gah!!!"
The monster slammed against the window frame in a frenzy, shattering glass in an instant. The window's frame bent and warped under the pressure, about to collapse entirely. Realizing the danger, Haruno forced her trembling legs to move, calling to her mother, who was still dazed:
"Mother, snap out of it! We have to run!"
"!!!"
At Haruno's shout, Mrs. Yukinoshita finally snapped out of her terror—but her expression was still one of horror.
"Haruno! Look out!!!"
Crash!!!
Haruno felt a sudden chill behind her. A massive shadow loomed over them. She turned, her blood running cold. The monster hadn't fully entered the room, but its long neck was stretched inside. Its head—bigger than an adult's—was right there, its eyes locked on Haruno with a ravenous gleam.
It opened its beak, big enough to swallow a person whole, and lunged for Haruno.
"Haruno!"
Mrs. Yukinoshita watched in horror. Fear rendered her legs useless; she couldn't stand, much less move to help. Haruno felt sure she was about to die, devoured by this terrifying, unknown monster. As her life flashed before her eyes, Yukino's face flickered into her thoughts—like a final vision before death.
But just then, something on Haruno's collar glowed.
Crack!
The giant avian beak seemed to crash into an invisible barrier.
"Huh?"
Mrs. Yukinoshita saw that Haruno was surrounded by a golden, translucent shield of light. The monster's beak was caught on its edge, kept away from her. And Mrs. Yukinoshita felt warmth on her own neck. An identical glowing barrier had enveloped her as well.
"This is..."
Both mother and daughter were at a loss. The monster flew into a fury. It couldn't accept that its meal was right there yet completely unattainable.
"Gaaah!!!"
Opening its beak wide, it looked as if it were building up some kind of energy in its throat.
Vvvmmm!!!
A purple beam of light shot out toward the shield around the two women.
"Ugh!"
They instinctively raised their arms to protect themselves, though it was unnecessary. The beam struck the barrier—and vanished without a sound or ripple, as if into a black hole.
"Guh?"
Now the monster was the one confused. Its surprise, however, didn't last. A moment later, a powerful sense of danger made its eyes flash with terror. It tried to pull its head out of the room.
Too late.
The crystal amulet at Haruno's neck glowed, drifting forward. Before anyone could react, it fired a golden ray of light at incredible speed.
Whoosh!
The ray penetrated the monster's head without giving it any chance to defend.
"Grah..."
Its screech cut off abruptly. Its eyes dimmed, and life drained away. Thud! The creature's massive head struck the floor, blood seeping from the wound. Its body went limp.
Haruno and her mother remained still, hardly daring to breathe, fearing the beast might have one last attack.
